A less than stellar experience.
Very noisy. Very basic room.
Lots of stairs to climb with luggage.
Breakfast was cardboard basic.
We paid extra to have three in a room, and had to deal with trundle bed with just a sheet.
Wifi is NOT secure and one laptop high jacked.

The Wayfarer room with Fireplace was Loud (street side) couldn't sleep, windows difficult to open & very musty smell, shower head wouldn't work & over priced. Next time we will stay at the Portola Hotel just 10
Minutes away.

I've read all the negative reviews about this place, wondering if they are talking about somewhere
else! Small quaint little inn if you are looking for something simple. Cute cottage like rooms with a dutch door. Wine and cheese served in the afternoon and a small quick continental breakfast in the morning. Only thing that could have made it better is if there was a coffee maker in the room. Small and cozy! Great price too for Carmel. Will definately stay there again!!

Room Tip: Small cozy and simple. Nice quiet inn!!

The Inn is comfortable, well-located and served our needs well for three beds (one king; two twin). We enjoyed the in-room fireplace and the property is charming. What prompts me to write though is the extraordinary service, attention and knowledge of Deyenne, who received us so warmly and ensured our comfort every step of the stay. She helped with restaurant recommendations and was a wealth of interesting background and history of Carmel. The hotel was lovely - she made it more so!

I just wanted to write to let others know I would not recommend staying at this hotel. One minute after booking a room on expedia for the wrong night I called the hotel to change the date or cancel the reservation. The Owner of the hotel denied both my requests. Given the service here I hope others stay away.

We've stayed here before, and this was a return trip based on that stay, but things are not the same as they were a year ago. Rumor has it that the place has changed hands (no confirmation). The rooms are clean and tidy, but many things are in need of maintenance. In our room, one of the nightstands had a glass top, the other did not. There was a clock radio/phone provided, but there was no outlet for the radio, and the phone was unplugged and didn't work (I did try plugging it in, and there was dialtone). The refrigerator in the room needed defrosting, and anything put inside it froze. The bath towels were coming apart at the edges and seemed worn out..

The breakfast was just toast/cereal/waffles/juice/coffee/milk. No other protein provided. There was not much attention paid to keeping things supplied. One morning, someone complained to the desk that they were cold; could the fireplace in the breakfast room be turned on? The staff there were wearing jackets, and they refused the request, saying it was not cold enough to warrant the fireplace. There was no in-room coffee provided, nor did the room have a microwave oven. In the breakfast room, there was a microwave oven, however it was marked "staff use only."

Outside, the fireplace on the patio was not working or turned on. You could see places where someone needed to apply a paintbrush. The hotel claims to be 3-star, but perhaps that was in another life. This was the 2nd week in December, and although much of Carmel was decorated for the holidays, the Wayfarer was not.

On the plus side is the location, with limited parking provided, and the price. You can walk to Ocean Ave easily. If you can overlook the deferred maintenance and the staff's thrifty attitude, you just might enjoy your stay here. Keep in mind that there are many ways to spend far more for a hotel room in Carmel.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms have more view, but there is no elevator, and there are stairs.

Even thought an ocean view room was reserved, it was "not available" upon check in. The room was large, but everything was old, worn, and tired. The fireplace was the heater, and it was not working. Staff came to light the pilot light the next day, but when that didn't work we were told there was nothing else they could do. Breakfast was just sad--not enough food or staff.
