“Inexpensive, but...”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 days ago NEW

We've stayed here before, and this was a return trip based on that stay, but things are not the same as they were a year ago. Rumor has it that the place has changed hands (no confirmation). The rooms are clean and tidy, but many things are in need of maintenance. In our room, one of the nightstands had a glass top, the other did not. There was a clock radio/phone provided, but there was no outlet for the radio, and the phone was unplugged and didn't work (I did try plugging it in, and there was dialtone). The refrigerator in the room needed defrosting, and anything put inside it froze. The bath towels were coming apart at the edges and seemed worn out..

The breakfast was just toast/cereal/waffles/juice/coffee/milk. No other protein provided. There was not much attention paid to keeping things supplied. One morning, someone complained to the desk that they were cold; could the fireplace in the breakfast room be turned on? The staff there were wearing jackets, and they refused the request, saying it was not cold enough to warrant the fireplace. There was no in-room coffee provided, nor did the room have a microwave oven. In the breakfast room, there was a microwave oven, however it was marked "staff use only."

Outside, the fireplace on the patio was not working or turned on. You could see places where someone needed to apply a paintbrush. The hotel claims to be 3-star, but perhaps that was in another life. This was the 2nd week in December, and although much of Carmel was decorated for the holidays, the Wayfarer was not.

On the plus side is the location, with limited parking provided, and the price. You can walk to Ocean Ave easily. If you can overlook the deferred maintenance and the staff's thrifty attitude, you just might enjoy your stay here. Keep in mind that there are many ways to spend far more for a hotel room in Carmel.

Room Tip: Upper floor rooms have more view, but there is no elevator, and there are stairs.

Even thought an ocean view room was reserved, it was "not available" upon check in. The room was large, but everything was old, worn, and tired. The fireplace was the heater, and it was not working. Staff came to light the pilot light the next day, but when that didn't work we were told there was nothing else they could do. Breakfast was just sad--not enough food or staff.

I just stayed at this quaint hotel in Carmel. It's a couple of blocks off of Ocean so it's quiet and the walk is nice in the main part of town. You can walk to the ocean easily. The rooms are clean and there are fireplaces available. The owners are very nice as well as the front desk staff. There is a well tended garden area that is fun to sit and sip wine and or have snacks. The owner offers a happy hour with gratis French wine (good too). Breakfast is offered at the hotel gratis. It is simple with waffles, fruit, assorted breads and cereals and you can sit in the sunny eating area. There is a good feel here at this hotel and I'll be back to bask in it's charm.

Room Tip: This is a quiet hotel but if you'd like a view of the sunset you may want to choose a room on to...

Great location in Downtown Carmel. We felt it was good value but there were definitely problems. Didn't find the staff very friendly or helpful and the breakfast was pretty basic. Problems with the plumbing in the room and the lack of a kettle or coffee maker was definitely a down.

Well, the best thing to say is that it is in downtown Carmel, but at $300 per night, this place is robbing its customers.
You can hear your neighbors on each side and over you; the head board bangs against the wall when you get in and out of bed; the carpet is so old I think that President Lincoln stayed here when the carpet was newly laid; my laptop has a bigger screen than the tv; there was rust on the shower rod; the toilet handle had to be jiggled to stop it from running; I sneezed and the bar soap flew onto the floor it was sooooo small; the fixtures in the bathroom look worse than the tools in my garage.
Please don't stay here until they take care of the guest rooms.

We booked this hotel due to the limited availability in Carmel. We were dreading the hotel due to the reviews we read. However, from our arrival we found the staff friendly, informative and very welcoming. The complimentary wine served between 4-6pm was good and we sat in a beautiful flower filled garden enjoying our refreshments. The room was spacious and had a separate room for the kids. The beds were comfortable and clean. The decor dated as is most of inns in America but we had a good nights sleep. The breakfast was basic but the kids loved the waffle machine! I know a few comments were made previously on how tacky this is but being from the uk thought it was great fun!

Room Tip: We had room 16 which was ideal for 2 adults and two young kids.

I like to write positive reviews but I cannot find one good thing to say about this so called "inn." First of all, it is a motel. There is no A/C, the mechanism for opening the window was broken, the carpet was stained, the towels were threadbare, the tub was badly chipped, the shower curtains were bought at the Dollar Store, the bedspread was a large rag, the clock didn't work, the lighting was terrible……should I go on? The "breakfast" was waffles with cheap syrup-no fruit, yogurt, eggs, etc. I had to give it one dot because there's no mechanism to give it the zero dots it deserves.
