“Value + Service + Location = I'll be back!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2009

We stayed one night at The Carmel Wayfarer in January of 2009. We booked the room through the visitors center in Monterey and received a rate of $119 for a king suite with an adjacent twin bedroom.

First - if you're looking for a place in Carmel - especially off season, I highly recommend the visitors center in Monterey. The staff was energetic and helpful, directing us to a great inn within our budget. The internet prices were triple what we were quoted upon arrival.

The inn is charming and the staff is more than helpful in providing directions, referrals, and information about the area, dining, etc. We found both Susan and Dennis to be helpful and attentive. The hotel is in an excellent location, within close walking distance to all Camel has to offer, beach, shopping and dining. The beach is a great walk downhill, and a hearty walk uphill! All told it took me an hour to walk the entire beach and to / from the hotel.

Breakfast was good - a buffet style with yogurt, coffee, MYO waffel, juice and pastries. You can sit on the patio and eat which is a nice option. The inn also hosts a wine hour from 4 to 6, and includes a hearty selection of dips, cheeses, and red / white wine. A nice inclusion.

The room was spacious and clean, with lovely antique touches and decor. We loved the second twin bedroom - it was a great use of space for us. The room overlooked the balcony which overlooked the courtyard and the remainder of Carmel - it's situated at the top of the hill with glimpses of the beach. A lovely sunset view.

I must concede that I didn't sleep well in the twin, but my mother slept great in the king with no complaints. I thought the bed was a bit soft for me and the linens were a bit worn - but I'll admit to being picky in this area.

Other than the minor bed issue, I absolutely enjoyed this inn and it's location in Carmel. I'd highly recommend it!

  • Liked — Location, Charm, Attention to detail
  • Disliked — Soft Twin Bed - but the king was great!

We went to Carmel for 4 days for our honeymoon. We stayed in room 18 which is basically it's own little apartment - separate from the other rooms. It had a fireplace, flat screen tv and pretty view. The staff at the Inn is awesome and very helpful, they have wine and cheese in the evenings, and a decent breakfast. Everything is super clean and the main room in the lobby is cozy and pleasant. Convenient to all Carmel has to offer - an easy walk everywhere. We just loved it and want to come back for an anniversary. I do recommend room 18 if you want to be alone and away from the street and other guests.

Location: Excellent, only 5 blocks to the center of Carmel
Price; Reasonable
View: Nice long range view of the Pacific
Hospitality: excellent and friendly service
Garden: very charming
Breakfast: continental
Room: #12. Old and worn. Bed was not comfortable, and the walls are thin.
Parking: not enough for all guests

For what you pay this is a good deal.

But if you want a romantic getaway...pay more.

We only stayed one night while driving up the big Sur, this hotel has very helpful and friendly staff who make good local recommendations. The rooms are clean, comfotable and the heating is very cozy. Breakfast is well supplied with waffles in addition to the usual contential breakfast.

We had a fantastic stay at the Carmel Wayfarer. My good friend and I brought our dogs (2) to Carmel for the weekend since Carmel is the most dog friendly city in the country, if not the world! We were NOT disappointed!

The Wayfarer has 2 rooms which are dog friendly. It's $25/night extra for 1 dog and $40 for 2. We paid $166/night for Room 3 which is on the first floor (not including the cost for the dogs). However the first floor/courtyard means walking up a flight of stairs if that's a problem for anyone. You get to room 3 from the Inn's courtyard, which is incredibly charming. Some of the rooms you enter from the street (truly no stairs) but I liked entering from the courtyard.

Room 3 actually felt like a 2 room suite! We had 2 full bathrooms!! There was a bedroom with a queen bed and one of the bathrooms. And a living room with a fireplace, day bed with trundle (so basically 2 twins), mini-fridge that seemed overly cold (better than overly warm!), a TV with VCR (and a charming VHS movie library in the lounge/dining area of the Inn) and the other bathroom. It was a PERFECT situation for our 2 dogs since we separated them when we went to eat breakfast and we could close the double doors between the bedroom and living room and keep them apart. They had dog bowls for us to use and even a soft doggie bed that my puppy loved more than her own bed! Very cozy room. It was just fantastic!!

There is a nice breakfast that is far from "full". More a glorified continental. Toast, bagels, English muffins and some cold cereal. Hot Belgian waffles, hard boiled eggs, yogurt, milk, orange & apple juice, instant oatmeal... that's about it. Breakfast is served from 8-10am and (the best part) they didn't care if we left the dogs in the room while eating in the dining room/lounge. Some places absolutely would not let you leave your dogs in the room at all, but that can be very difficult. The Wayfarer had no problems with this as long as you were being an overall responsible dog owner.

There was also wine & cheese from 4-6pm every evening. This was nice as well. The Innkeeper, Dennis walked around and chatted with us and was incredibly friendly and helpful (as were all the other staff).

Parking wasn't a big problem for us. The spots on the street are 2 hour max between 8am-6pm (so you basically have to move your car by 10am - and I did see tickets!) But the hotel also has a small lot in back with 9 spots. We were able to find a spot there on Saturday morning since we were walking everywhere that day. Ocean Ave is a few blocks walk away - maybe 1/4 of a mile; an easy stroll. To walk all the way to the (leash free!) beach is closer to 3/4 of a mile but again - very walkable. There is SO much to see on Ocean Ave.

Wifi Internet, tho my computer said the signal was low, worked fine. For looking up restaurant websites and checking some email it was no problem and very handy. Not encrypted though - so wide open.

Dog travelers don't miss Diggidy Dog - an amazing pet supplies store in town. They also keep an updated list of pet-friendly lodging and restaurants on their website: http://www.diggidydogcarmel.com/petplaces.html
Don't miss Afternoon Tea at the Cypress Inn! You can dine on finger sandwiches and vanilla bean tea while your doggie chews on a bone at your side!! We LOVED Porto Bella - they treated our dogs so well. Forge in the Forest while I'd heard a lot and was excited - had awful service. I wouldn't go back with all the amazing dog friendly restaurants in the village.

The Trip Advisor community was right, this is wonderful Inn, and the host and his staff are excellent. We stayed in room 8 which has a kitchen, large "bedroom/living room" and a very spacious bathroom. The heat is provided by a gas fireplace, and made for a romantic mood. In November is was cool enough that the fireplace was used quite a bit,
The kitchen is small, but very function for 2, and well stocked with dishes, cooking utensils and small frig, microwave and a full size stove. It was great for leftovers, and prepping wine and snacks for the evening.
They serve a wonderful breakfast that varies a bit daily as well as a fun wine and snacks in early evening. With the friendly guests and fire in lobby fireplace we stopped in every evening we were there.
It was in very close walking distance to everything and the front desk was very helpful in all the peninsula attaction information. If not for them we would not have visited Point Lobos where we even saw two whales swimming by. The park even loans out binoculars to visitors.
Be sure not to miss Monterrey Aquarium, Scenic Drive, Mission ranch, and sunset on the Pacific. We got rained out a couple times, but had one spectacular sunset !
Only complaints is how expensive all the restaurants are in town, and some were even rude, guess we did not look $$$ enough.

  • Liked — Warm and friendly owner and stagg, great large, quiet, comfortable room, breakfast and afternon wine.
  • Disliked — Nothing!

we stayed in a lovely suite- like accommodation with two bedrooms and one bath. our king bed was lush and so comfortable and our granddaughter was thrilled with her own room, with view, TV, VCR, and the most charming bed with trundle bed beside it. Decor was lovely. the people at the inn were attentive and helpful. wine and cakes in the afternoon were especially welcome and they were most gracious in providing juice and/or tea for our granddaughter. While the breakfast was only buffet items and certainly no gourmet affair, there was ample fresh fruit and juices as well as excellent fresh-baked muffins and coffee cake in addition to the home-baked waffles with berry sauce as well as syrup. Since our room was way in the back corner, the lack of air-conditioning didn't bother us as we got the cool ocean breezes at night. The bathroom needed a facelift, but was adequate. Location was excellent, and, although parking is quite limited we did find space on the street. Walking to everything in town was a cinch! We'd certainly return to the Wayfarer for "bang for the buck."
