Description: In Italian, PortaBella means beautiful door.In Carmel, it's a threshold well worth crossing.During the day, passerby on Ocean Avenue are lured in by the sight of diners happily engaged in food and conversation on the picturesque flagstone patio. At night, heady aromas and laughter waft innocuously out the famed front door each time it is opened.Once inside, you're instantly transported to the sun countries of the Mediterranean with "La Cuisine du Soleil."Inspired by regional dishes, the menu takes you on a gustatory tour of Italy, Southern France and Spain, complemented by a wine list offering an excellent selection of California wines.

“A must in Carmel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2014

One of the best things to do in Carmel is stroll up and down Ocean Avenue window shopping and watching the variety of tourists that visit this cute little town.
After visiting some of the art galleries and shops recommended by the Visitor Center (http://www.carmelcalifornia.org/things-to-do/Visitor_Center.aspx), when lunch hour becomes a must, Portabella is the answer...
Luiz (the manager) and his staff will greet you with incomparable warmth and will make you feel at home. The menu will be presented in a comprehensive way and quality and price of the food will make you fell like coming back.
One way of judging a good restaurant is the continuous presence of locals (and their pets too!)and Portabella can be proud of being one of those.

“Lovely place for dinner”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2014

The appetizer, Quattro Funghi alla Panna- was fantastic. Next time, we may try the Mushroom Napoleon (just to see what it is like). Enjoyed our main courses (Paella Valencia and the Halibut) and the bread pudding for dessert.

“Dined like a king”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 26, 2014

After driving all day through a rare and raging rainstorm from Los Angeles to Carmel to celebrate my father's 80 birthday, I discovered why Portabella is his favorite restaurant. My family was the last to arrive at my dad's celebratory dinner, and we were met outside the restaurant by the manager/maitre'd who cheerfully whisked us inside through a side entrance directly to my father's table. The evening only got better from there. Our tremendous meal was only surpassed by the quality service and romantic ambience. I would recommend Portabella to everyone hoping to make their stay in Carmel special.
