“Felt like I was staying in a fairytale...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2014

Charming....Charming place. We just returned from staying at Edgemere Cottages. We stayed in the Rosemont, but from what we saw the other cottages were just as charming. I however feel in love the Rosemont and next time I will request that cottage..2 rooms both with fireplaces. The living area has everything you need - real wood burning fireplace, fully ready for you to enjoy. We used it in the morning as well, nothing like getting out of the shower and stepping over to the fireplace. There is also a kitchen and dining table in the room, we found tea bags, hot chocolate and even microwave popcorn...they have thought of everything..We went to Cannery Row for a bit - short drive away and upon our return, there we four freshly baked cookies waiting for us in our room. The second room in the Rosemont has a large very comfortable bed, there is also a smaller bed if you have a third person with you. the fireplace in the bedroom is gas and has a remote control!! This was awesome...Many charming windows in the cottage...open them all to get the "full fairytale effect". The bathroom is a little small, but the shower was great and there is plenty of room to prepare for the day. They provide some wonderful Lavender soap and lotion that you should try, very nice. I opened the charming window in the morning and we greeted by distant "meows" from one of two cats, that live there. Breakfast was amazing fresh fruit, sausage and home made French toast that melted in your mouth. This place thinks of everything..a very short walk will take you to a fabulous beach, don't miss this...it is very peaceful and calming. We went there at night and saw people enjoying bonfires, as we walked down towards the ocean, there was a bonefire with no one there, so we enjoyed that as well.. Have nothing but positives to say about this lovely place. It is just lovely.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the Rosemont very much, but I would imagine all the rooms are just as charming. The two f...

My husband and I stayed 2 nights over Thanksgiving weekend to celebrate our anniversary. We found Edgemere through tripadvisor and was not disappointed. We stayed in the Patio room and it was very cozy and welcoming. The house cats were a great addition and made us feel as if we were staying with family. The breakfasts were amazing and kept us full for our exploring in Carmel, Monterrey, and the 17-mile drive. It is walking distance to the beach as well as the town. Perfect in all aspects. We will definitely stay again and love the area.

My mom and I were not looking for an over-luxurious place to stay in Carmel -- we wanted something charming, approachable, and homey, and we found it! Gretchen's place feels lived-in and we felt instantly at peace with our surroundings. There are so many different nooks where you can settle down, enjoy some wine and cheese, and watch the wildlife buzzing around her gardened patios. Her breakfasts were also AMAZING.

Room Tip: We stayed in the patio room and our patio space was more private than that of the other rooms.

My fiancé and I drove south from San Francisco and had a stop over in beautiful Edgemere Cottages. We loved it. Fantastic service from the owners, great breakfast and cool house cats. The location, only a minute's walk to the beach is also great - we bought some firewood, a bottle of wine, and had a barbecue down there. Recommended.

We just got back from a week in Carmel at Edgemere Cottages. What a lovely place to spend a week! Our hosts Gretchen and Doug have a great location and they made us feel extremely welcome. We were a block from the beach and we could hear the waves every night. The breakfasts were wonderful. I've never had quiche as delicious as what we had. And our cottage, Devon, was perfect for two people. It was great having the kitchen in the cottage.

Carmel was the first stop in our tour of Northern California. We stayed at Edgemere in the Patio Room for 4 nights.

Pros:

- incredible hosts: Gretchen you are amazing and Doug you are great. Riffraff and Magenta (resident cats) you are simply adorable.

- excellent location: in a residential neighborhood, super charming and picturesque, and just 1 block away from one of the most beautiful beaches I've ever seen and a 10 minute walk from the Missio

- lovely room: spotless, equipped with everything you may need (I mostly appreciated the heater), super quiet and cozy, very confortable bed, nice and warm blankets... You don't hear noise from the streets and though the room is in the main house we didn't hear anything (TV, kitchen noise etc.). we could fully unwind there.

- mouthwatering breakfast: homecooked, different every day, one of the best memories of my holiday, especially the strawberry French toast DELICIOUS not to mention the quiches and the muffins, all accompanied by coffee, tea, juice and fresh fruit...The dining room where breakfast is served had the warmth of the things that make a home feel really lived in, with lots of books, newspapers, and family things.

- parking: . Parking space is available directly in front of the house

- Riffraff and Magenta: adorable and purring tabby cats, always ready for some cuddling.

Cons:

Nothing I can think of, apart from the cold and humid weather that doesn't obviously depend on anyone!

Room Tip: The Patio Room was spotless clean, comfortable and very quiet.

We fell in love with Carmel. It was the highlight of our trip and we ended up in Carmel by default, as all the accommodation in Monterey was booked (this was exceptionally fortunate for us).

Carmel was the most quaint village and made us feel like we were in a storybook. It has lots of trees, lots of cute cottages (many of which cost a few million dollars, as they have been specially made to look old) and lots of character.

We stayed in the Rosemont Cottage, as we were a family of 5. The cottage was very cute and Gretchen was the most delightful person. She was very helpful and friendly and made delicious breakfasts.

Our only regret was that we only had 2 nights here. We would rather have foregone staying in San Francisco and spent a week in Carmel.

Our girls loved the beach. Even though it was overcast and cold for swimming, the beach had things to explore. We saw lots of squirrels on the beach and were fortunate to see dolphins.

Thank you Gretchen for a wonderful stay and we would LOVE to come and spend a week in beautiful Carmel.
