“warm wonderful inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 26, 2008

My wife and I both enjoyed our stay at this charming little inn. The entire staff were warm pleasant people. The staff gave us great suggestions about the local restaurants and things to do in the area.The room we stayed in was a pleasure. It was large and very clean. My wife and I have stayed at many inns and the carmel fireplace ranks near the top for location and cleanliness. I cannot remember a warmer more informative staff.

We had out of town guests who needed a room near our house, so this seemed a good choice. It was less expensive than most of the other choices in town, and located very close to the center of Carmel.

It isn't luxurious, nor can you expect it to be, at close to $100 per night in Carmel, off-season. The shower turned out to be a bit of a shocker to our friends, who commented that if anyone else turned theirs on at the same time, it went suddenly very cold or hot, likely a function of this being an older property.

However, it was a fairly comfortable, reasonably-priced place to stay in a good section of town. Had the other guests with several energetic children been more considerate, the stay would have been even better.

  • Liked — Proximity to downtown for walking visitors
  • Disliked — Shower sensitivity to other rooms' shower usage

Carmel is a relaxing oasis from daily grind. Great bars, restaurants, art galleries, shopping, wine tasting, beaches and people watching. If you want to get away for longer than a few hours, an overnight stay is a great way to celebrate a birthday, anniversary or just unwind.

If this sounds good to you, stay in the village. But, stay somewhere else. Lobos Lodge has larger, nicer rooms in the $125-175 range. If you are going to spend $200+ stay at the Tally Ho Inn, Pine Inn or L'Auberge. These three have luxury accommodations, but very different styles.

At Tally Ho, many rooms have large screen LCD TVs and views of the water. It's more Westin and less Fairmont. If you like the Fairmont, try the Pine Inn or L'Auberge. The Pine Inn feels like a you're staying in a room from Hearst Castle. L'Auberg feels more like a Tuscan Villa.

Back to the Fireplace Inn

Pros
======
- They had rooms available on a peak weekend with only a few weeks notice (probably a bad sign)
- Great location
- Clean rooms, friendly staff

Cons
=======
- Cramped, out-dated rooms, frustratingly small and dark bathroom
- Two night minimum for weekends
- Limited parking

Bottom Line - We once spent a night at the Comfort Inn in Monterey near the mall for $40. That room was on par with #21 at the Fireplace, where we were charged $165 x 2 nights, but could only stomach one. We won't stay there again.

Next time, it will be the Tally Ho Inn or L'Aubreg for us!

The Carmel Fireplace Inn was the perfect place to begin our vacation. The Inn is charming with a garden and patio for guests to enjoy. Our room was quiet and very, very clean. We would be happy to return to this little gem. . .

Carmel Fireplace Inn is an older property in a very convenient location for shopping and restaurants. The room we had ,#23, was small but very clean and cosy. It was very quiet as well .
Bathroom was a bit old fashioned but functional. Reception staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Continental breakfast was fine although some yogurt would have been a nice addition to the bagels, muffins and fresh fruit.

  • Liked — location and quietness
  • Disliked — dated decor

Our room was one of the smallest rooms they have to offer, but it was $120 per night, not bad for summer time, and it was very clean, neat, and quiet.

The breakfast was very good (fresh fruits, bagels, ect) and the staff was very helpful.

Not luxurious, but very cozy. Expect a small room, small breakfast, and no parking. But it's good for what you pay for, and it looks very cute.

This is a cute and very comfortable place to stay when in Carmel. Room 25 was very nice with comfortable chairs, and a gas fireplace. George and the rest of the staff were very helpful. Breakfast was served in a room with a fireplace and trays were proved if you wanted to take things back to your room. Loved the little garden and would love to stay here again.

If in Carmel this could be the place for you! While the rooms don't seem to be very big the place offers much more. Having a fireplace in your room is very special, something that you just don't get in most places. In walking distance of everything, and really cute!!!!!
