“Enchanting Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2014

Vagabond Inn was more delightful than we could have imagined. We went here for our 20th Anniversary. Our room overlooked a storybook courtyard cascading with colorful flowers and a melodious fountain. We could walk to the beach as well as the shops and restaurants of Carmel. We had a lovely bottle of wine waiting for us at check-in, the innkeepers were helpful and informative, we had a fire in the wood-burning fireplace each night, and breakfast in our room each morning. There was also a lovely wine and cheese each afternoon. If you like charming, small, boutique hotels with lots of character, give this place a try.

We really liked this place, and will definitely return. Loved the little court-yard and garden, and enjoyed our complimentary cheese and wine there in the evenings. Our room was very comfortable, and each morning a simple, but tasty breakfast was delivered to our room by a smiling staff-member. The front-desk staff were most helpful with area recommendations for dinner and sight-seeing. The Inn is within walking distance to downtown and the beach.

An absolutely charming B&B in the business district of Carmel. Blocks to endless restaurants and art galleries. The rooms are large and very comfortable, surrounding a beautifully landscaped courtyard. Wine and cheese every evening was a pleasure. Breakfasts were good but simple- cereal, bagel, yogurt, and fruit. This would have been fine for a couple of days, but we were there for 5 nights and it got to be somewhat boring. However, we would in general give the highest recommendation to this wonderful inn.

Room Tip: Extensive photos of each room are on their web site. They were pretty accurate. Many but not all roo...

While in Carmel we stayed at the Vagabond house which was in walking distance to downtown and the beach. The inn is charming and the staff on site are friendly and helpful with area recommendations for dinner and sights to see. We stayed in a newly renovated room 10 which was so comfortable (bed was great) and had a working fire place which we enjoyed. The bathroom was spacious and I loved the blue tooth shower speaker that connects to IOS. Breakfast is delivered to your room each morning (fruit, yogurt, cereal, hard boiled eggs). The inn offers a cheese and wine hour in the late afternoon which you can enjoy in the main room or courtyard.

The only con I have to mention is that during our stay it appears our neighbors in room 9 had an issue with termites which woke us up in the middle of the night. That said we did not experience any encounters with termites in our newly renovated room.

We ended up staying in Carmel one night because we were just too tired to drive any further. We ended up at the Vagabond. Since it was off-season, there was availability, and we were able to get a room without having reserved in advance. The reception was very kind and helpful and prepared for us a cold breakfast (yogurt, hard boiled egg, fresh fruit and juice) that night for the next morning as we had to leave before breakfast was served.

We stayed in the room just off the reception desk. The room was clean and nicely decorated, the bed was extremely comfortable as was the twin. The bathroom had been partially updated, and the liquid soap and shampoo have a light, fresh fragrance. We did hear the neighbors walking around upstairs and talking as well as the fountain in the courtyard, which gurgled all night long. Without earplugs, I would not have been able to sleep well at all. It was also a cold, rainy night, and we could smell the warm scent of fireplaces burning in other rooms. (Ours did not come with a fireplace). The one side street that our room faced had unrestricted parking, so there was quite a bit of activity in the otherwise quiet neighborhood.

Not sure if I would stay here again because of the noise. This is typical in an old building, so it is something that you have to keep in mind if noise bothers you. Otherwise, it is a cute place to stay.

Warning: Carmel at night, especially with rain, is very difficult to navigate as it is very hard to read the street names on the poles of the stop signs, after we finally found where the street names are located!

Room Tip: If you are sensitive to noise, ask for a room on the uppermost floor and on the street with restrict...

While some would argue the point of travel is find adventure or expand one's experiences, I would say everyone once in a while it should be just to smell the roses. We took a break from our hectic lives to experience a trip very akin to a Seinfeld episode. No physical goal, no crazy exotic location, no quest for enlightenment - just a small slice of heaven and indulgence.
The Vagabond Inn is just that in a nice tight package. We signed up for the deal that's occasionally offered via living social. Its well located within walking distance of the restaurants and bars. The rooms have the snug fit of one's favorite spot on the sofa. Breakfast was delivered on time w/ some of the freshest fruits and warm bagels. We signed up for the couples spa and message - which I would highly recommend and ended our day with a lovely walk past a fairytale cascade of homes to the beach to watch the sunset.

Leave the laptop at home, grab a glass of wine, and (gasp) turn the phone off. Then head down to Carmel.

Room Tip: Go for room 9 or one of the upper floors

Been away for 25 years and that was way too long for this magical experience. The rooms have everything you could wish for. Comfort, charming, two great chairs by the fireplace that burns real wood, a decanter of Sherry nearby, a superb king size bed, a made to order breakfast delivered to your room at your specified time and a cozy but complete kitchen to consume the delicious food. Staff was marvelous lead by Randall.

And all this just steps from the charm of the shopping and eating areas of Carmel.

We will not wait this long again and deny ourselves such a magical experience.
