“"The archetype B&B"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 2, 2013

The Vagabond is what all bed & breakfasts should aspire to be. It is comfy, spacious, intimate, welcoming and meticulously maintained. An elaborate breakfast was delivered to us in the morning which was a first time experience of the B&B's I've been to. We enjoyed our breakfast right by the fireplace! The Vagabond is what we remember Carmel for and it's a stay we'll remember for years to come. It was truly a special experience. Better yet, we received over-the-top service. Randall pointed us in the direction of Paso Robles, which turned out to be well worth the trip.

My husband and I booked this place for our honeymoon and stayed in Room 11. It was just beautiful! We especially loved the gas fireplace, which we used every morning and evening, The big picture windows brought welcome sunlight into the room each morning and overlooked a beautifully manicured courtyard and fountain. The bedding was comfortable with lots of pillows and blankets - a big plus in my book. We had a small kitchen in our room, which was another nice amenity. The breakfast that was delivered to us each morning was a choice of cereal or yogurt with granola, toast or pastry, hard or soft boiled egg, juice and coffee or tea. I thought it might not be enough for my husband, who tends to like a big meal at breakfast, but it ended up being more than either of us could finish. We were tempted to take it down to the seating in the courtyard so we could enjoy the fountain and perfect weather, but instead chose to sit around by the fire sipping coffee in our pajamas while we ate.

The location of this property is perfect. They have ample parking and it is surrounded by loads of art galleries, restaurants and eclectic shops. It's also just a short drive (maybe 10 minutes) to Monterey, where there is lots to do including kayaking and whale watching. We also enjoyed a couples' massage at the onsite spa and the therapists were professional and friendly.

There were two people that helped us at the front desk. One was a southern gentleman that was extremely friendly and happy to help. He even took care of purchasing advance tickets to the aquarium for us, which was perfect because he emailed them to us so we were able to print and use them as we arrived to Monterey, before we checked into the Inn. We loved working with him! The other was a young woman who seemed pretty uninterested in us and quickly became annoyed with questions I asked about things to do in the area. We were not all that impressed with her, but overall our experience at the Vagabond's House Inn was great.

And just a small note about the wine in our room... The complimentary bottle of wine and brandy was a nice sentiment that we appreciated. Sadly though, when we opened the bottle of Cabernet to enjoy, it smelled and tasted as though it had soured or spoiled. It was pretty rancid. We ended up pouring it out. It was a nice touch, but we were disappointed that we weren't able to enjoy it.

So clean and charming. Can't recommend it highly enough for those that like little gems. Lots of good dining suggestions from the innkeepers. We really enjoyed having breakfast brought to the room. The ambiance and landscaping was captivating

Conveniently located to main section of village..we had our own lovely little (attached) cottage.with a sitting area and kitchenette. Breakfast was brought to our room. There's a sweet little sitting area outside and our little fog was very welcomed.. Will stay again on our next trip!

The Vagabond's House was wonderful. We loved the location, our room was so cozy, we used the gas fireplace every night. The bathroom was quite nice, very updated. The lovely breakfast delivered to our room every morning was such a treat. The staff could not have been more accomodating and helpful. Would not even think of looking for another place to stay when revisiting Carmel.

Room Tip: I think you can get a good idea fromt heir website. Our room was not our first choice, but we loved...

My wife and I spent a wonderful three nights here. The inn is located somewhat on the fringe of the downtown area, but within an easy walk to just about everything - e.g. 5-6 minutes to Ocean Ave. (the main street in Carmel). The rooms are arranged on two floors around a beautiful courtyard. The room we stayed in was on the second floor. It was roomy, immaculately clean, the bed was very comfortable, and the gas fireplace added a nice homey feel. On-street parking was available right outside the inn; however a parking lot was also available across the street. The innkeeper, Thomas, was very gracious and helpful. If I had to try and find a negative (and it's a very, very minor negative) it would be the breakfast. It was kind of standard fare - eggs; cereal/granola; yogurt - that sort of thing. You fill out a checklist of what you'd like, which is carried over from one day to the next unless you change it, and the meal is brought to your room. Maneuvering the meal was a bit awkward, however, my wife and I very much enjoyed breakfasting by the fire. Overall a great place that we would certainly visit again.

This is really a beautiful little hotel in a very quiet part of Carmel. It's within walking distance of all the great shops and lovely homes. I think it's probably five blocks from the beach, maybe less. Thomas, the Innkeeper, is very helpful and I would encourage you to ask him where to eat as he has very good suggestions. The hotel itself is very beautiful and serene. As we were checking out I walked around the grounds and took a peek at a few of the other rooms from outside as the maids were cleaning and they all looked just incredibly cozy and charming. The ONLY thing that I an complain about with this hotel, which is very very minor, is their pillows are terrible. I've put that in the suggestion box to the owners, so hopefully they'll be upgrading those as they just didn't meet the plush and high-end amenities of the rest of the place. All in all, I would definitely stay here again in a heartbeat, it's a really lovely property.

Room Tip: We chose an upper level room, but if I did it again I would probably choose a room on the lower leve...
