“Great value for money, dog friendly better than carmel average”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

Most restaurants in Carmel are crappy. Here the food is great, and there's a huge patio for dogs with heat lamps and blankets. We've gone two years in a row for Poodle Day weekend and loved both meals from start to finish.

“Below Standard for the Area, You Will Freeze!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

I went to Basil on the recommendation of a friend, but after visiting, I can only imagine that anybody who would recommend this restaurant must have visited in the summer. That is because it is EXCEPTIONALLY COLD NO MATTER WHERE YOU ARE IN THE RESTAURANT. You WILL be uncomfortable if you come here.

The indoor seating area is very limited (approximately 10 tables) and more than half the tables are outside. If you sit outside, there are heat lamps and blankets, but if you sit inside, the temperature is almost just as cold and there are none of these comforts. The reason is that they leave the door open to the front of the restaurant the entire time so waiters can come and go, and all the tables are sufficiently close to the door in this tiny restaurant that you will literally be freezing. Almost everybody was wearing his or her jacket and the two of us were still cold even in that. I recommend you NOT COME TO THIS RESTAURANT unless you are totally warm-blooded.

That being said, if the cold was a way to get people to purchase more soup, it worked. The cauliflower soup we ordered was outstanding. It had the perfect consistency and was full of flavor and zest. We were also very pleased with the venison, which, again, is incredibly flavorful and served with the perfect accompaniments. The salmon special was good but offered nothing unique that you couldn't find at any decent fish restaurant. The portion size was also quite small.

The service was good but great. Although everybody was very professional, there was a miscommunication between the waiter and the kitchen, and they completely forgot about our soup. We reminded them when the main course was served, and they offered it to us for free. We were pleased with that but disappointed that we had nothing to tide us over for a VERY LONG WAIT for the main course. I'm not sure why it would take so long to make such a small amount of food (as stated, the restaurant is tiny), but this place manages to find a way.

Monterey and Carmel are filled with dining options. I would guess that most of them are better than Basil so avoid this when you're in town.

“A terrific meal to end a great holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

We dined here on our last night in California after a week of food and wine tasting in and around San Francisco and Napa.

The restaurant is set off a small courtyard and offers outside dining (with blankets if needed!). The dining room is a little on the cosy size, and if you went as a large group (or if your neighbours were loud) it could potentially be a little too cosy, but we ate around 9pm on a Friday evening and had no such problems.

After a couple of delicious martinis to warm up and a quick browse of the dessert menu, our party of 3 opted to forgo a starter to ensure we had room for a dessert.

For mains we had steak mignon, beef short ribs and the seafood special. All 3 were really excellent, the quality of the ingredients was obvious , and we all agreed that the meal was the best we'd had all week. The desserts were similarly excellent, and the cobbler deserves a special mention.

I had not looked on Tripadvisor before eating at Basils and have been surprised to read some of the negative comments particularly about the service. Our waitress (her name i think was Kat) was lovely, she was knowledgeable, attentive, and with just the right amount of friendly banter......Basil are very lucky to have her!

Overall, a terrific meal to end a great holiday. We will be back!

“Good food, excellent service, charming patio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

After a long walk on the beach and bluffs with our dog, we were happy to find this sweet little spot tucked into a courtyard. Like many places in Carmel, they were very welcoming of our dog, bringing him treats and a water bowl.

The menu is a little small, but everything was delicious. Their bread is house made - a crusty Italian-style which they serve with a yummy bright green herby spread. The lamb meatballs were tender and flavorful. The gnocci served with sweet potatoes were tender. The kids had burgers and they were AMAZING. Juicy, and so delicious. We shared a berry cobbler for dessert - another winner. The coffee was outstanding as well.

Service is outstanding, as is the location - about 1 1 /2 blocks from Ocean Ave on San Carlos. We would definitely eat here again.

“Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013 via mobile

Seldom am I in awe of a restaurant. Basil has delivered everything anyone could ask for. Our waitress Katherine was by far the loveliest, most attentive and knowledgeable I have ever come across.

Everyone has to go there!
