“A terrific meal to end a great holiday”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2013

We dined here on our last night in California after a week of food and wine tasting in and around San Francisco and Napa.

The restaurant is set off a small courtyard and offers outside dining (with blankets if needed!). The dining room is a little on the cosy size, and if you went as a large group (or if your neighbours were loud) it could potentially be a little too cosy, but we ate around 9pm on a Friday evening and had no such problems.

After a couple of delicious martinis to warm up and a quick browse of the dessert menu, our party of 3 opted to forgo a starter to ensure we had room for a dessert.

For mains we had steak mignon, beef short ribs and the seafood special. All 3 were really excellent, the quality of the ingredients was obvious , and we all agreed that the meal was the best we'd had all week. The desserts were similarly excellent, and the cobbler deserves a special mention.

I had not looked on Tripadvisor before eating at Basils and have been surprised to read some of the negative comments particularly about the service. Our waitress (her name i think was Kat) was lovely, she was knowledgeable, attentive, and with just the right amount of friendly banter......Basil are very lucky to have her!

Overall, a terrific meal to end a great holiday. We will be back!

“Good food, excellent service, charming patio”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013

After a long walk on the beach and bluffs with our dog, we were happy to find this sweet little spot tucked into a courtyard. Like many places in Carmel, they were very welcoming of our dog, bringing him treats and a water bowl.

The menu is a little small, but everything was delicious. Their bread is house made - a crusty Italian-style which they serve with a yummy bright green herby spread. The lamb meatballs were tender and flavorful. The gnocci served with sweet potatoes were tender. The kids had burgers and they were AMAZING. Juicy, and so delicious. We shared a berry cobbler for dessert - another winner. The coffee was outstanding as well.

Service is outstanding, as is the location - about 1 1 /2 blocks from Ocean Ave on San Carlos. We would definitely eat here again.

“Perfect”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 29, 2013 via mobile

Seldom am I in awe of a restaurant. Basil has delivered everything anyone could ask for. Our waitress Katherine was by far the loveliest, most attentive and knowledgeable I have ever come across.

Everyone has to go there!

“Very nice dinners”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

We had dinner here on our last night in Carmel. The staff are very welcoming and helpful. Our meals were delicious. My husband had the ribs and I had a vegetable plate. We would certainly dine here again.

“Not as good as we remember it..!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2013

Our lunch at Basil's was not as good as the first time we visited about a year ago.

My Basil Burger was OK, but my wife's Artichoke Salad was so-so. The ingredients were fresh so no complaints there, but..she was only able to find 2 or 3 small pieces of artichoke in her salad so the term "Artichoke Salad" was mind of misleading.

Also, we feel that $3.50 for a diet coke is kind of pushing it....!!

All in all, we were not overly impressed by the food or the service so we can only give Basil's an "average" rating versus an "excellent" rating the first time we visited.
