“One of my favorite places in the world”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2011

I've been traveling to the Highlands Inn for decades now, one of the first times I met Madonna on her honeymoon with Sean Penn. It's one of the most beautiful places on earth.

The standard rooms are small but nice, but this isn't meant to be a mega-resort. It's a quiet place to get away and enjoy some quiet time. If you can afford it, get a townhouse suite, you won't be disappointed with your decision.

We stayed in a two-level unit with ocean views overlooking the pool. The views are spectacular. The room itself was spacious and perfect for our needs with a small kitchen and dining area. The main lodge was spectacular with a great smell of wood and breathtaking ocean views. The pool was also great, just warm enough. If I had to make any negative comments, I would say that the rooms could use some tlc in regard to decor and upkeep. Otherwise, this place is great.

The view, the terrace, the fireplace, the sound of the ocean are amazing! So much so that we didn't care that the room was a bit outdated.

We spent 3 nights at the Inn and loved every minute of it. We had a two-floor suite with a magnificient view of the ocean. Service throughout the Inn was impeccable. We had room service breakfast each morning which was promptly delivered by a cordial staff member. We arrived at the Inn late one night from a drive down the coast and although the restaurant was technically closed, they accommodated us with salads and steaks. Our room was very comfortable and well appointed. This Inn was just what we were looking for and it enhanced a very romantic weekend.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2010

I stayed there for 1 night 10 years ago and had to come back. My husband and I arrived during the week of Christmas and were looking forward to 3 nights of relaxation. We found the room (king w/view) to be old and slightly run down though it had all new interior design. All ammenities cost a small fortune and if the front desk staff concentrated more on how to do their jobs than out snobbing the guests, the experience would have rated mediocre rather than crappy. The hot tub was a disgrace and the constant tipping to get our car from the complementary parking got old fast. For the money spent there are much friendlier and updated choices in Carmel.

If you're up to driving the Pacific Coast Highway, you will relish relaxing at this Hyatt. It is just south of Carmel By The Sea in the Carmel Highlands. The entire complex sits layered on the mountain side offerring exquisite views of forest, mountain, ocean, and wide open blue sky also great for star gazing! Rooms are ample in size. Ours had its own porch/patio/balcony. Although there is electric heat, the fireplace adds ambiance and coziness. All wood and materials are provided and makes for a cozy warm feeling. Restaurant offers excellent cuisine. Staff are very friendly and helpful. We truly enjoyed our stay and would return. It's worth splurging a bit for wonderful memories.

We stayed there on our way from LA to SF. The hotel was very nice and the rooms too. One big disadvantage: don't try to find it at night if you don't have a GPS (the car we rent didnt have one), so we had a really hard time finding it as there isnt a single sign coming from Carmel.
