“Perfect 20th Anniversary Celebration; beautiful views, excellent service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 28, 2009

My husband and I celebrated our 20th Anniversary at the Highlands Inn and we couldn't be happier. It was the most amazing trip, from the time we arrived to our departure. We were greeted in the lobby, where we were told they upgraded our room to the Spa Suite for our anniversary. We had the most beautiful view of the Pacific on our balcony. The room was beautiful with a kitchenette, woodburning fireplace and jacuzzi tub.
We made reservations at the Pacific Edge Restaurant the night of our Annviersary. We had the corner window table and the view was exquisite (see picture). George was our waiter and his timing was perfect. We arrived when the restaurant opened and he timed each coarse so that we had desert right at sunset. We were very lucky there was no fog the night of our anniversary, which is common that time of the year.
We loved everything about the Highlands Inn and highly recommend it.

The Highlands Inn has a wonderful location on the hills overlooking the Pacific just north of the town of Carmel. The main building is very nice, the ground are beautiful and the views (from every room) can't be beat. The rooms, however, vary in quality. Some are newly renovated 'spa suites' and others are older and starting to show their age. I had one of the older ones and found the carpets and draps a bit on the dusty side. The bed, however, was very comfortable and I enjoyed the woodburning fireplace. The views from the balcony were fantastic. Some people might not like that the road out of town is just below some of the buildings but I hardly noticed it. The Pacific Edge restaurant at the hotel is exellent. I would encourage anyone to stay here if either 1) you make sure you book one of the newer rooms or 2) you know what you're getting with the older ones and are ok with that. The staff was great and the service was seamless. I would go back again but would make sure I had a newer room as I wasn't very happy with the one I had.

The Highlands Inn was a fairly nice hotel. The rooms are standard, although they do include a wood-burning fireplace which is nice for a romantic getaway. The views are what makes the hotel though - each room has a spectacular view of the ocean and a wonderful balcony that allows you to sit and relax by it.

The amenities are not anything special. The pools are small and could use updated seating. The hotel does offer bikes to ride into the nearby nature reserves.

This brings me to the next plus of the hotel: the location. From the Highlands Inn, there are at least two nature reserves only a few minutes drive away - and they would be easy to bike to. It is also very close to Carmel's downtown area.

Overall, I do not know that the hotel is worth the significant regular room rate, but we were very happy with it having used a reward night.

This place is so unique it is not like any other hotels and resorts. It has the perfect blend of luxury, wildness and natural beauty. This is one of the few places we wouldn’t mind to revisit every year or every other year.

I was at first surprised by some of the negative comments posted on this site about Highlands Inn Carmel. After reading some of the negative comments, I think I understand why.

There are three types of units on this property. (1) 880 sq. ft. two story town house style suite, (2) 850 sq. ft. single floor suite, which is even more beautiful, (3) ~350 sq. ft. room.

Most people who are not happy with the hotel stayed in a “room”. Hotel photos show rooms have similar deco style as suites, but $500 - $600 is too much to pay for such a small room. One can enjoy the Pacific Edge Restaurant and Sunset Lounge without checking into the hotel. Besides, one should never check into a luxury hotel for only one night. Find a simple clean place to spend one night.

Excellent hotel!

The location is a little out of the way, but worth it!

It's on a hillside in a woody location looking at the ocean! Not too shaby!

Try to get one of the "townhouse" type rooms that are two stories. Very nice! It's expensive, but worth every penny!

The staff is very professional and eager to make sure you have a good stay. I was really impressed.

I've stayed here a bunch of times for different events. Always have a great time and enjoy this place.

One of a kind...

  • Liked — The exclusive location and rooms
  • Disliked — Little outside of town. (Carmel)

This would be THE place to go for a honeymoon, look no further!

I stayed here twice, with 3 others. Once I stayed in a little house there built for 2 people and once in the lounge on a sofabed, there was a bedroom upstairs for the other 2.

The bathrooms were always fantastic, I remember the jacuzzi and a Japanese paper screen and in general the rooms were cosy.

I'd love to go back there even though it's set in an off the beaten track area, but therefore the ideal romantic hideaway and probably severely underated! Don't bother researching honeymoon destinations for a year because this is the place in my book!

The staff were charming and efficient, we actually arrived last minute without a booking and within minutes our accomm was sorted.

Brilliant place.

Booked a one bedroom suite. Very nice with full kitchen. They do need to update and put in flat screen TV's. We had a few plumbing problems with the jacuzzi tub not draining properly but all in all it was a terrific stay! We used the fireplace constantly.

Loved driving into Carmel Valley for a little wine tasting. A must is Talbots Tasting. Do the full 10 tastes! Sit outside and enjoy! Eat lunch or dinner at Cafe Rustica! Do any special! If it's a nice day...dine outside! Da Giovanni's in Carmel is fabulous! The cannelloni is fantastic! Try the house wine..the Meritage is really nice for the price!
