“Spectacular views, spa tubs, oh yeah!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 7, 2012

Right overlooking the ocean and the beautiful and famous Monterey trees, this 100 year old hotel is wonderful. Our townhouse was a 2 story, sleeps 4 room with spectacular views on both levels, a spa tub, a balcony, a full kitchen and an oh so comfy bed. If is we're not so beautiful outside, we would light a fire and stay in!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view and if there are4 of you get a townhouse.

So refreshing to leave the sweltering summer heat and go for a slice of cool air - to Carmel, CA. The hotel is perched right on the coast line of the dramatic California Coastline - a million dollar view. Easy and very friendly check in, Our room was a one story spa suite.

The fireplace was ready to go with easy access to more wood. We could see the fire and view from our bed...talk about relaxing!! Bed was super comfortable - with windows open to enjoy the crisp air. HUGE jacuzzi tub, awesome shower - loved all the bath products.

We checked in for two perfect nights that included breakfast - let me describe breakfast: omelette with dungeness crab, avocado and tomato - delish with great coffee and an awesome view.

We had a great time - also ate at the Pacific's Edge restaurant I will review separately.

Would love to go back to this little hamlet.

This hotel overlooks the ocean. Each room is accessible by itself ( no interior)
The view of the ocean is absolutely spectacular , even on a cloudy day.
The hotel is very expensive and will have to do some climbing stairs to get to your room, but it's worth it.

The view is really spectacular and most rooms have fireplaces so makes it a very romantic place to be. Very close to the town but yet far enough. Had 2 meals at the hotel and both were great. Best to avoid if you are with kids. If you are going for a special occasion the split level suite with a open plan bathroom complete with jacuzzi is well worth spending. Location is the same as the tickle pink inn and prices are the same, would go for Hyatt any day.

Room Tip: All rooms have great views so don't honk you have to worry much. Rooms are a walk with stairs so...

It was hard to decide whether to give this property an average or very good rating. I decided average because there were some downsides that I had trouble getting over. First, the good - the view is SPECTACULAR. Really world class. Binoculars in the room allow you to see migrating whales if your timing is good, sea otters and the most spectacular coastline anywhere. The wood burning fireplace and unlimited really good wood are great, especially since the weather in the area is mostly foggy and chilly. Free internet. The service was excellent. Seriously the valet parkers (complimentary valet)/bellman are like olympic athletes in their field. Friendly and amazingly helpful. Also free guest laundry complete with soap. Bikes you can check out for free and ride to the amazing Point Lobos park nearby. The not so good - a surprise $20 per day "resort fee" made the complimentary things not so complimentary (they removed it when I complained). $17 for two lattes in the restaurant. NOISY rooms (we moved once, they tried at least) overlooking highway 1, with stompers above us. While enjoying a serene moment Saturday morning in the lobby by the spectacular windows, the little crowd of pitchmen with their victims showed up trying to sell their timeshares. They were obnoxious and sounded like hucksters. Keep in mind this is a Hyatt Vacation Club property. Finally the bathroom was a bit tiny, and they only offer king beds in the room for non "owners." Our son was offered an air mattress, but decided to sleep in his sleeping bag instead so we could move around the room. I'd stay here again, but only on points and would ask for a room with no room above me away from the road as far as possible.

Room Tip: Away from the road, no room above you. Not very soundproof.

We stayed here b/c the two more upscale hotels we usually stay at in Big Sur required bothtwo nights and we only had one and one did not take teen under 18. The rooms are very ordinary with exceptional views. The restaurant was good but not great. On a very two star level they use an aero mattress as a rollaway, something I have never seen in an actual hotel before. Have a drink in the bar and take in the view and stay elsewhere.

Front desk guy was argumentative not listening to us at all, bell guy awesome, concierge great, rooms small, view great, parking inconvenient, .. It was ok.. Not great and not bad. Water was out for 2-3 hours.. No offer to get a shower somewhere else, or even a drink. We did get an apology and invitation to tour timeshare in the meantime,.. Really? Won't go back
