“Great views and standard Hyatt great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2012

The view is really spectacular and most rooms have fireplaces so makes it a very romantic place to be. Very close to the town but yet far enough. Had 2 meals at the hotel and both were great. Best to avoid if you are with kids. If you are going for a special occasion the split level suite with a open plan bathroom complete with jacuzzi is well worth spending. Location is the same as the tickle pink inn and prices are the same, would go for Hyatt any day.

Room Tip: All rooms have great views so don't honk you have to worry much. Rooms are a walk with stairs so...

It was hard to decide whether to give this property an average or very good rating. I decided average because there were some downsides that I had trouble getting over. First, the good - the view is SPECTACULAR. Really world class. Binoculars in the room allow you to see migrating whales if your timing is good, sea otters and the most spectacular coastline anywhere. The wood burning fireplace and unlimited really good wood are great, especially since the weather in the area is mostly foggy and chilly. Free internet. The service was excellent. Seriously the valet parkers (complimentary valet)/bellman are like olympic athletes in their field. Friendly and amazingly helpful. Also free guest laundry complete with soap. Bikes you can check out for free and ride to the amazing Point Lobos park nearby. The not so good - a surprise $20 per day "resort fee" made the complimentary things not so complimentary (they removed it when I complained). $17 for two lattes in the restaurant. NOISY rooms (we moved once, they tried at least) overlooking highway 1, with stompers above us. While enjoying a serene moment Saturday morning in the lobby by the spectacular windows, the little crowd of pitchmen with their victims showed up trying to sell their timeshares. They were obnoxious and sounded like hucksters. Keep in mind this is a Hyatt Vacation Club property. Finally the bathroom was a bit tiny, and they only offer king beds in the room for non "owners." Our son was offered an air mattress, but decided to sleep in his sleeping bag instead so we could move around the room. I'd stay here again, but only on points and would ask for a room with no room above me away from the road as far as possible.

Room Tip: Away from the road, no room above you. Not very soundproof.

We stayed here b/c the two more upscale hotels we usually stay at in Big Sur required bothtwo nights and we only had one and one did not take teen under 18. The rooms are very ordinary with exceptional views. The restaurant was good but not great. On a very two star level they use an aero mattress as a rollaway, something I have never seen in an actual hotel before. Have a drink in the bar and take in the view and stay elsewhere.

Front desk guy was argumentative not listening to us at all, bell guy awesome, concierge great, rooms small, view great, parking inconvenient, .. It was ok.. Not great and not bad. Water was out for 2-3 hours.. No offer to get a shower somewhere else, or even a drink. We did get an apology and invitation to tour timeshare in the meantime,.. Really? Won't go back

Absolutely fabulous in every way. Great service and incredible rooms with views of Big Sur. Rooms feature wood burning fireplaces. Some rooms have jaccuzzis and kitchenettes. The Inn is close to Carmel and about 15 min from Big Sur. The food and wine at the Pacific's Edge (http://www.hyatt.com/gallery/pacificsedge/index.html) lounge & restaurants are superlative. Make sure to consult Paul the wine director, who can recommend the perfect wine to go with you dinner choices.

Our room had a view, a balcony, a kitchenette, sleep sofa and a fantastic jacuzzi tub.

It's not cheap, but for a special getaway or a vacation it's well worthwhile.

Room Tip: Order the signature dish, the Abalone at the restaurant for dinner, and in the morning, try the panc...

We are not your typical Highlands Inn visitor. We bring our young family and use the kitchen to prepare two of three meals a day. We have been visiting Highlands Inn for years and will continue to return. The private units are welcoming and comfortable. We enjoy the in-unit fireplace, which we use to create a cabin-like atmosphere as we play card games or watch DVD movies. Since we have visited many times, we are aware the kitchen is light on amenities and bring a few items from home to keep dining costs low. We have started a family tradition by living large one evening in the on-site lounge overlooking the Pacific Ocean's horizon. Everyone gets their drink of choice and a snack as we play board games with the sunset in the background. It is a family moment our young family members insists on recreating.

During our most recent stay, we noticed the property was upgraded to include new stone finished hot tubs. What an outstanding enhancement over the old plastic style the stone tubs replaced.

I would recommend the Hyatt Carmel Highlands to friends and family without any hesitation. It is one of Hyatt's best properties.

We were staying at The Canary Hotel in Santa Barbara ( nice hotel......) and decided to check out the reviews of the Hyatt Highlands as we were to stay there the next two nights. ( great drive along the coast) I was getting worried about what to expect after reading some of the reviews. I travel a lot and get concerned when I hear a hotel is outdated and noisy and since this hotel is a little pricey I was questioning my decision
What I was impressed with was that the Manager read and commented on many of the reviews and I would much prefer to take a chance on a hotel with good management over a good hotel with bad management (The Delta Hotel in Regina Saskatchewan, arrogant and obnoxious) so I called the hotel the next morning and left a message on the managers voice mail stating my concerns.
We received a call back that morning from a staff member from the hotel following up on my concerns - I felt reassured after the phone call.
I read that the decks were old and needed to be updated and that the rooms smelled of smoke - when families are enjoying campfires and roasting marshmallows this is going to happen. When a "resort" is on the Pacific Ocean it's going to get a little weathered looking but that is the charm of this place.
If you are looking for an immaculate hotel similar to what you're going to find "downtown anywhere" this is not the place for you If you want to experience unique accommodations similar to what you'd find on the Oregon Coast and you're willing to pay - you'll probably like this place. If not call the Manager - I'm pretty sure he or she will look after you.
We booked two nights but decided to stay three
I have never written a Tripadviser review before

Room Tip: I really can't comment on restaurant or other facilities - we have only eaten in Carmel and Mont...
