The location, friendly staff, beautiful grounds, and large rooms more than compensate for the high room rate. The experience is more than worth the charges.

Room Tip: As is true in most hotels, ask for a free upgrade. There's nothing to lose.

Beautiful location above highway 1 overlooking the coast. The grounds are beautiful and well maintained. The location is 5 star, the hotel itself is 4 star. Our room was spotless and had everything we needed except spare electrical outlets. I will say the room, although spotless, was a little tired but not enought to take away from the feel of the location. We did experience a fair amount of road noise while our balcony doors were open, not sure if this is true for all rooms. We had a couple meals at the California Market restaurant and they were tasty and fresh and the view can't be beat. We will be back as points allow!

Room Tip: Our room, #218 was above Highlands Drive and you could hear the road noise 24/7. Perhaps other room...

Situated with a wonderful view of the water from the main lounge, the hotel was quite suitable for a short stay with two grandchildren, ages 4 and 7. We were surprised, and comforted, to find so many families with children, with the hotel staff comfortably acting like they had seen it all before. The rooms are somewhat smallish, bland and outdated (as is the main lounge). All are clean and comfortable but lack enough sockets for anything electrical and there were jumbles of chords behind furniture and not an available socket. Our townhouse suite had the bedroom below the living room/kitchen. Room service produced timely, abundant meals. Engineering responded immediately to multiple problems with TV/DVD. The smoke from the wood fires has been noted by previous reviewers and it is abundant indeed. There is a lot of ups/downs, given the hillside location of the property.

Our family of 6 was greeted by a "butler" on the first day, who gave us a tour of the hotel, and assisted us on our last day as well until we were seated comfortably in our car ready to leave Carmel. Unfortunately we forgot his name but I'd give him 10 stars out of 10 for his exceptional service!

The front desk service was good. We appreciated the yummy fruits available anytime we want such as fresh apples and bananas.

The hotel location, more precisely their Pacific Edge restaurant is quite literally on the edge of the Paicifc. Our room overlooks the ocean as well (as all rooms in the hotel).

One thing that bothered us was the pollution coming out of the rooms' chimneys that contributed to the unclean air in the morning while walking from our room to the restaurant in the main building.

Overall, our experience was great!

I have to start off by saying that Carmel is probably one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to. We absolutely loved the area. This hotel is very nice and high end. We traded in our Marriott Oahu week for this place and we were lucky to get it. There isn't much to do with children in the resort. The lobby is very nice and overlooks the ocean as do most of the rooms but it wasn't really a place to let your kids run around in. The pool wasn't large but it was nice and we visited it a couple of times before the fog rolled in. We got a one-bedroom villa and although the first level (that contains the kitchen, living room and a bathroom) is small, the second level is pretty large. The second level has the bedroom and a really large bath tub and restroom- and a walk-in closet. The resort itself is kind of on a cliff overlooking the ocean- our villa had a fireplace and there was ample supplies of firewood in our room as well as around the resort. There is a very nice restaurant here that looked very nice but we didn't visit it. We spent most of our time discovering the area and enjoying the beauty. It doesn't get very warm here.. we were there in late August and it rarely got warmer than 70 degrees.

There are many properties in the lodging business on the Monterey Peninsula, but only one in the Carmel Highlands, south of the busy Monterey Peninsula and 30 minutes north of Big Sur. There is the hotel, a world class restaurant, although I prefer the more informal and less expensive Marketplace which is only open for breakfast and lunch, and features outside seating where you can see and hear the waves crashing below, or watch for whales with the binoculars on each table. With a little work you might be able to arrange a few days with Hyatt Vacations to stay for a lower rate by simply listening to a short sales presentation about the timeshare offering there. This is a good idea as there is no other timeshare offering on the Monterey Peninsula or even close-by. The rooms are exquisite, with a balance of comfort and rustic charm. Mine has an unobstructed view of Point Lobos, a porch and great fireplace with all the wood you would ever need there. If you have trouble with stairs, make sure you ask for one of the rooms for the disabled. This hotel is built on a hillside and provides all kinds of views. Note the spa is at another Hyatt hotel in Monterey proper about 8 miles to the north. I am a timeshare owner and I don't work for Hyatt.

Room Tip: All the rooms are great.
