“Still romantic ... but not all that”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2012

We spent the last night of our honeymoon at the Highlands Inn ...largely because I remembered it as the most romantic place in the world from a visit about 15 years ago. Not much has changed, but actually, plenty has changed. It's a Hyatt now, and apparently a time share property. We were able to secure an ocean view room with fireplace ... view was somewhat obscured by trees and the road was right below us, but we were still happy. No suites (we remembered the great tub) were available for this Friday night stay, too bad. Our stay was fine, but pricey at well over $400 for the night. Room decor is OK, somewhat dated ... and the bathroom is very small. Woodburning fireplace was a real plus on a rainy afternoon/evening. Raphael our bellman was fabulous. Here's what really didn't work for us: the lady selling timeshare presentations was really, really annoying during the afternoon nap. We really, really did not need or want a timeshare presentation in our very limited, very expensive one night stay in this hotel. Not sure I could have been more clear with reservations, checkin and everyone concerned that this was our honeymoon ... no one seemed to care or acknowledge in any way. Next time in Carmel, I guess we'll explore other options.

Room Tip: Appears it must be important to book very early if you want the suites with the jacuzzi and fireplac...

Our good friend recommended this location for our visit to Carmel. I don't think that we could have found a more perfect place to stay. The view from our suite was unbelievable. The accommodations were stellar. The only suggestion I would have for the resort is to make sure that the room is pre-warmed. We arrived to a very cold room that took nearly 2 hours to warm up. BRRR!

We are glad you had a wonderful stay with us- we apologize for the chill. The central coast can get very chilly! We are thrilled that you enjoyed the view and we hope you will visit us again.

I spent a weekend in an Ocean View room at this unique hotel, which successfully combines low-impact Californian wooden bungalows, breathtaking views, and room decor refined enough to justify the price tag. It was a welcome surprise to see such unpretentious buildings blending into the landscape, and yet harboring such comfortable rooms with local touches such as a real fireplace and extremely large stone-floor bathroom. That the closet was in the bathroom, Park Hyatt style, made for an uncluttered bedroom, reinforcing the impression of not being in a standard hotel room.
The full-width wooden deck and supplied binoculars for whale-watching make spending hours in the room a pleasure.
I must give a special mention to the housekeeping staff: our chambermaid was genuinely friendly (perhaps upon my trying a few words in Spanish?), setting up our fireplace, bringing extra firewood, and extra (huge, new, and ultra-plush) towels all without being asked, just because we mentioned the fireplace and going into the jacuzzi.
Valet parking was efficient and polite throughout our stay.
I was surprised at the lack of healthy choices at the California Market restaurant, given the demographics of its customers.

While driving up the coast from Big Sur we decided to pull in and see if the old Highlands Inn had any rooms and were surprised with a one bedroom suiite with fireplace, huge tub, and amazing views. A a great price as well and less than we would have paid at Ventana down the coast. The room was huge and very cosy. Very comfortable and had a modern well equipped kitchen. We didn't want or need to leave although we were right next to the Point Lobos reserve, the town of Carmel, and a gorgeous bar/restaurant with a magic view of the sea.
The bed was huge and comfortable and the artwork made it feel like a private unit.
We watched whales from our little balcony as well as amazing sunsets every night.
There is a fully equipped gym, jacuzzi, bike rentals, and 24 hour room service and every staff member we saw was pleasant and friendly.
A perfect cosy getaway if you are looking to relax and unwind in a beautiful environment!

Room Tip: Get one of the suitesd on the second floor with kitchen and ocean view...totally worth the priced

Stayed at the Hyatt Carmel Highlands in December 2011 while driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco, unfortunately for only one night.
Arrived the hotel in the afternoon, staff at the front desk was very friendly and helpful. I have a Hyatt Diamond card, and we got a complementary upgrade from a room with view to a one bedroom suite. Valet parking was also complementary.
The room it self was very nice, two levels, with bedroom, and a large bathroom in the ground floor and a living room with a fireplace and kitchen in the first floor.
Got the chance to try both the swimming pool and the fitness center. Our stay was excellent, and the only complaint I have is that we only had time in our schedule to stay for one night...
We will definitely come back!

We stayed a week at the Carmel Highlands in mid--December for our "winter getaway". We loved the ocean views, the wonderful bed, our little kitchen, the ease of accessing the wonderful towns of Carmel, Monterey & Pacific Grove. We did a little Christmas shopping, some wine tasting (lots of new wineries in the Monterey County/Santa Lucia Highlands area) and had some great meals. Most of all, it was very relaxing--actually sat down in front of the fireplace and read on each of our 7 days. We'll be back next year!

Room Tip: Make sure you have a view of the ocean! Second floors are best. Our choice was #325.
