“Condo presentation worth every second!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 15, 2011

We stayed for 2 nights on a condo presentation rate ( $99 a night + $100 gift voucher). The first night we had a unit very close to the coast road on a holiday weekend - lots of traffic and motorcycles. We were able to change units for the second night and it was much quieter. The unit we had was nicely kept up with a partial ocean view/balcony. It had a complete kitchen which I utilized for making breakfast. It had a large Jacuzzi tub, but we did not use it. Second unit was very quiet of all noises and just footsteps away from the Pacific Edge restaurant (no drinking and driving here!!!). I have pretty severe asthma and the smell from all of the wood burning fireplaces from almost every unit filled the air. I could not stand to be outside on the balcony to enjoy any of the views or ambiance.

Room Tip: Get a room away from the coast road!!!

Located about 10 minutes away from the main town of Carmel, this is a nice place for honeymooning, retired and otherwise those who love quiet. It has good views, and is a timeshare property.

The rooms are nice size with a privacy screen separating the bedroom from the living room area, a kitchen that comes with utensils etc., refrigerator, microwave etc. and a jacuzzi in the room.

There are no kid friendly activities or such on this property so if you are traveling with kids, you will have to figure out activities in Monterey, Carmel etc. - there are none on the property.

This is a timeshare vacation property so you may get pulled into sales pitches that come along with staying at vacation time shares ("its only $30K to own this beautiful place for 1 week a year.....")

Pros:
Valet parking on site for free
Prompt and courteous service
Quiet property
Hot tubs and swimming pool on property

Cons:
Not walking distance to anything, away from Carmel
Not good for kids or other kid friendly activities
No tennis courts or golf
No activities on property

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking ocean views on 2nd or 3rd floor are better than garden view rooms

We love the Highlands Inn enough that we have purchased 3 weeks timeshare. Great place for adults, quiet and away from many tourist activities. Most rooms a like efficiency apartments, with separable sleeping and living room / dining areas.

Room Tip: Request a timeshare room in the back for less road noise

If not for using hyatt points we would have felt that this property is way overpriced. I think there is a large mix of rooms, sizes, updates, etc so do your due diligence. We didn't have a choice of rooms as we were using points, so ended up with a small king room. I believe all have fireplaces. So the highlights are the view, the balcony and the fireplace. But even our bathroom was very outdated and in need of a facelift. Kind of felt like a regular hyatt room but in a beautiful setting. The service was exceptional and people we know who stayed in the 2 bedroom condo loved it.

So maybe some of the rooms are worth the price tag, but definitely not all of them. The California Market restaurant is hit or miss. Breakfast was disappointing but enjoyed a sandwich at lunch.

Finally nobody mentioned the hwy 1 noise. It definitely resonates upwards so given a choice between Ventana, Post Ranch or here, the others are quieter and nicer.

I've stayed here over ten times, both for business and for pleasure. The rooms / bungalows have fantastic views, very comfortable beds, upscale linens, wonderful fireplaces. The pool is heated and the hot tub clean. Its a perfect base for visiting Monterey (You stay out of the busy touristy areas) Carmel (But, its so much quieter), and Big Sur. The Lounge has great views as well, and they have music a few nights per week. The restaurant is very good with extensive wine list. Given a choice, the views are better here than PB. The breakfast restaurant is great as well; its has a great view from the deck. (You can also stay next door for half the price!)

The Highlands Inn is not a hotel but rather like a luxury condo that you are renting. If you can get the one bedroom it comes with a small kitchen, living room and bedroom with a fireplace. The views are really great and the grounds are very well maintained. It's in a wonderful location on the side of the hill overlooking the ocean (when you can see through the fog)! The staff is very helpful and the bar has a great feel and wonderful view as well. The only complaint that I would have is the work out facility is way too small. It's got the basics but for the price you pay to stay here you would expect more than what they have. Otherwise, you will not be dissapointed. There is nothing like a fire going in the middle of August!

Room Tip: If you have Hyatt points a good idea to use them plus be Platinum helps.

I really liked the Highlands. We stayed in a room that essentially felt like a cabin overlooking the ocean - it had a private deck that we spent more time on that we probably should have. I am not giving it 5 stars, though, because I felt it was a bit more expensive than it should have been. I just wish there had been more value in the stay. But that being said, the views alone are almost priceless and you will certainly be happy that you stayed here - we were. We did not try the dining because it did not seem worth the price (and chose instead to go out for some highly recommended expensive meals).
