“Great little find”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2014

Having come away from a dreadful Best Western in Monterey we stopped for coffee purely by chance in ocean drive Carmel and thought how lovely the town was. After coffee we took a walk through the town and decided we would look for a hotel, tried in Pine Inn and they had an ocean view room available which was good for us. It's very original which is very fitting with age of the town etc. The ladies on reception couldn't have been nicer or more helpful to us. We had a lovely day in Carmel, took breakfast and left to head further south, Carmel and the Pine Inn are both worth a visit.

The location of this old hotel in Carmel is one of the best but this tired hotel needs some major TLC. Our room was a superior king room which had wooden window shutters that were broken and wouldn't keep the light out in the morning, though the ocean view was nice. The bed headboards were made of cloth(can u say headlice?). I would not have wanted to see a standard room if this was "superior". The restaurant was the best part of the visit and we got the dinner package included which was great! Overall a good experience in Carmel...not great! I would check for other options on my return.

We arrived in Carmel just before 9PM and already many of the local hotels has already been completely booked. We were fortunate enough to have bumped into some fellow travellers who recommended the Pine Inn (Carmel by the Sea) and we were quite pleased for their kind suggestion. We found the hotel staff to be very friendly and accommodating. The room and the hotel were cute and cozy and quite quaint. Its location was very central and included free parking, which was a welcome relief after having had to pay what seemed to be a ransom at other hotels in nearby cities. One thing that could be improved upon is the $5 coupon off of the price of breakfast; with the price of breakfast being what it is these days and given the price of the hotel room I think it would make more sense to offer a more significant benefit. In perspective this is really a minor issue as we enjoyed our stay here, however perhaps the hotel can find another way to make breakfast at the hotel a more attractive option. Frankly we had no idea what was available for breakfast nor the cost. In any event we are sure you will enjoy your stay here.

We stayed here for 2 nights on our road trip in California. This hotel was the first hotel built in Carmel, it is very quaint and traditionally decorated. The location of the hotel was 10/10, as was the restaurant and bakery. Our room was comfortable but small. There was no air conditioning which wasn't a problem for us as it wasn't summer, but I would imagine it may be a problem when it's really hot. The staff are helpful and happy to advise about restaurants etc. parking is available but there's not enough spaces, so we had to get up early to get a space. Carmel is lovely and the beach area is beautiful too.
When requesting any help at reception, it was slightly off putting being watched carefully by other staff members sitting in a room behind main reception. Whilst never rude these people listened and stared the whole time. The hotel has a lot of charm and character and we would stay there again.

The Pine Inn has a beautifully decorated lobby and the building is a historic one. The location is excellent because it is directly on Ocean Ave in the heart of all the quaint restaurants and shops. The rooms are small as expected because of the age of the hotel. Decor seems a bit dated. Noise from other rooms is a bit of a problem. When we checked in to our room we immediately noticed a strong musty odor. We asked to be moved to another room and the smell was somewhat improved. The room was neat and clean but if you notice little things like I do, you'll see that the blinds were rather dusty. If your goal is to stay in an historic inn, you will probably like Pine Inn. Many people probably aren't bothered by that "old house musty smell" but we thought it was unpleasant.

My husband and I only stayed there overnight but wished we had extended our stay. The hotel was very clean and we loved the old world charm. The staff were very friendly and we greatly appreciated the free room upgrade to a bigger room. The buffet breakfast at the restaurant was good. We would definitely stay there again.

After eventually finding the hotel - we arrived at night and there are no street lights - we were checked in quickly. We found the staff friendly and the buffet breakfast very nice. The beach is at the bottom of the road and there are lots of shops and restaurants/cafés on Ocean Avenue. Our room did not have air con. only a ceiling fan, so was quite hot even with the windows open. Carmel is a lovely place to visit and I wish we could have stayed longer.
