“Carmel is a gem”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 23, 2011

Historic hotel, hence slightly idiosyncratic. We were lucky to have a fantastic ocean view room with sunsets viewed through the eponymous pine trees.... large room with huge double bed and huge telly!! No lift, but a porter who was happy to take our suitcases up. Staff were friendly and helpful, especially the front desk staff. Breakfast was a decent buffet affair in the Italian restaurant attached to the hotel. Carmel itself is a pleasure, as are the local attractions: the 17 mile drive, beaches and Point Lobos which is spectacular. Shame we didn't take our golf clubs, Pebble Beach is not to be missed!!

Room Tip: Ask for an ocean view room, albeit I don't think there are many of these, we were given one on r...

My wife and I stayed at the Pine Inn in Carmel October 8-15, 2011.
It is an historic hotel over 100 years old in a great location just blocks from the
ocean and in the heart of Carmel.
Pluses include the location and the in-house Italian restaurant and bakery.
They serve a full complimentary hot breakfast weekdays including scrambled eggs,
sausage/bacon, french toast, oatmeal, cold cereal, toast, fruit and pastries. All you can eat.
The food in the bakery and restaurant is top-notch. In fact we never had a bad meal anywhere in Carmel.
Negatives would be it is an old building, unreinforced masonry as the sign on the front desk says. I also did not see any sprinkling system. So in a fire or earthquake I guess you could have issues. (But that never happens on vacation.)
They did replace the original windows, but the quality and function of them was less than
stellar. On the other hand, no hotel in Carmel has A/C so we had the windows open most of time anyway.

We had a Superior King room and it was the size of a regular hotel room. We did have a view of the ocean albeit three blocks away. Some of the other rooms we saw were tiny.

A note on parking. The hotel has 49 rooms but the parking lot has less than half that many spots, so it can be an issue. Parking on the streets is 2 hours only from 8am-6pm.
So if you can't get a spot in the lot you have two options: If you park on the street after 4pm you have until 10am the next day to move your car and avoid a $30 ticket. Or you can park anywhere on Ocean Avenue west of Monte Verde Street unlimited. Weekends are nuts, but during the week it wasn't too bad.

The website has/had a glitch when we booked that kept showing the tax as zero.
The tax is NOT zero. It is 10%. So if it says tax is zero, add 10% to the total.

It is pricey for what you get, but most of Carmel is. Would we stay here again? Probably, since the location and breakfast and in-house restaurant and bakery are so good.

Some notes on the area: Carmel is a charming, quaint town full of dog-lovers. It is like being in a Hansel and Gretel fairy tale. Do the 17 Mile Drive. It's beautiful. The $9.50 toll is refundable if you stop somewhere along the way and spend at least $25. Fisherman's Wharf and Cannery Row are worth it in Monterey. We did not go to the aquarium. Also drive down Highway 1 for at least 35 miles south of Carmel. It is breathtaking and not as scary as we thought it would be. The road is well maintained and the lookouts all have either a berm or very large boulders to make you feel secure when you get out to take a look. There is a restaurant along the way called Nepenthe. Incredible views overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

Room Tip: Superior King is a regular size hotel room. We saw some other very tiny rooms. I would spend the e...

Best location in all of Carmel! Not to be missed! Breakfast included was perfect.

Room Tip: Pick top floor corner for beautiful sunset views of the ocean

Stayed here due to its central location, the foyer has a beautiful antique style reception area - however, no food or drink are allowed in this area which is hysterical given that its in a hotel.

The room we stayed in was in a different building and no lifts accessed it and after all our shopping was a bit of a trek with heavy luggage. The room was TINY with a dressing area off and small bathroom.

Breakfast was only ok.

Lack of a swimming pool is a pity as Carmel can be very hot.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the main building - preferably with sea views.

Great location, but not sure i can stretch to anymore positives.
Not a negative stay by any means, we only stayed for one night, but the hotel is very traditional. In the public area's it's in a charming way, however when you get to the rooms, charming turns to dated, and they really do need modernising.
Expensive for what you get, which is a small room, with a slightly musty smell. However, you are in the middle of the town and can access all the great restaurants really easily.
Not the warmest of welcomes from front desk, and no help or offer of help with bags to room.
Other than that we had very little correspondence with staff.

I had stayed outside of town before and wanted to be in walking distance of downtown and beach. This is the place. Old and established but location trumps all!
