“Charming inn with some flaws”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 1, 2012

We spent 2 nights in room #10 on Memorial Day weekend for our first wedding anniversary. Sandpiper Inn is a bit removed from the bustling center of Carmel, but it's an easy drive with plenty of parking on both ends. The inn itself is really lovely - yes it's "twee," but what else do you want from Carmel? The room was on the smaller side, with a working gas fireplace which was romantic, relaxing, and perfect for heating the small room at night. Breakfasts were hearty and absolutely delicious, and I loved the afternoon tea, cookies, and sherry.

My main problem with the Sandpiper was that, throughout the 3 days of our stay, the entire Inn smelled faintly like poop. My husband and I didn't notice any plumbing problems or diapered babies, but from downstairs to upstairs, we could clear smell that the air everywhere was stinky. My other complaint is that one of the innkeepers was not very well versed on the surrounding area and gave questionable and uncertain advice regarding restaurants, bicycling, etc. When we asked another employee later, he was much more confident and ultimately correct in his recommendations. Overall though, a nice, comfortable, quiet place to stay.

We at the Sandpiper Inn can do nothing about the smell. There is a natural sulfer spring down the street from the inn ,which at certain times of the year, causes the area to smell like rotten eggs. As for the lack of knowledge from a staff member, she is new to the area and still learning. We apologize this inconvenience and hope that you will consider us again in the future.

We spent two nights in room 12. From one of our windows we could see the ocean. The room was very quaintly appointed and much larger than we expected. A no charge breakfast was served each morning by a delightful innkeeper. The location is very close to the ocean. Downtown is about a twenty minute walk but we found parking easy on a holiday weekend so we walked during the day and drove at night for dinner. It was very peaceful being in a residential neighborhood. The staff is very accommodating and warm.

Room Tip: If you ate looking for larger rooms numbers eleven and twelve are nice. Eleven g Has the better vie...

Lovely guest lounge, open fire, well-furnished and decorated, warm, well-lit and welcoming. Breakfast also taken in this and a small adjacent area. Breakfast included in cost: granola, fresh fruit including strawberries and quiche or french toast. But small room, no heater. on ground floor with 'view' of a fence! Nice touch of robes but somehow it just needed 'modernizing' - all a matter of taste, I guess. A bit like the rest of Carmel, traditional and a bit 'twee'. But where isn't in Carmel? Food is expensive in this little town with its seemingly homogenous demographic. They voted for no numbers on their homes, no postal delivery, and we even found one restaurant with no prices on the menu! (But it wasn't free!) Fog is also part of the 'Carmel experience'.

Room Tip: Enquire about the room size and view/aspect.

This is my third visit to this place and I absolutely love it! We were upgraded to a room with a fireplace, at no extra charge. May is the best time to come...not very busy at all. Wonderful service with the breakfast and the room! Hope to have a fourth visit in the future!!

Room Tip: Stayed in Room #4 with a fireplace and sitting area. Lovely!

The Sandpiper is definitely my choice for a hotel in Carmel. You can hear and/or see the ocean from many of the rooms and a trip to the beach is 2 short blocks. It is about a mile from Ocean Ave and the main crowds so shopping and restaurants are close but not too close (I don't like crowds on my vacations). The staff is frendly, knowlegible, and helpful for directions, suggested eating spots, etc. The place is newly renovated so the Google street map doesn't do it justice. The food is great and I always found a parking spot (great for Carmel!). If you want to walk or run on the beach this is the place to stay.

Room Tip: Try one of the 2nd floor rooms for an ocean view. Room 6 is my favorite. Bring a flashlight if you w...

Just a block from the beach - my room even had a view across rooftops to the water - the sound of the waves made a sweet surf lullaby. Each room has a distinct shabby chic decor. Breakfast and afternoon tea were delicious. The one downside is that property is a bit away from the center of town - with the narrow and unlighted streets it takes a few days to figure out routes to and from. The staff at the inn is very helpful.

Room Tip: Ask for a second floor room facing the water.
