“Great little hideaway, ABSOLUTELY dog-friendly!”

Happy Landing Inn is such a lovely little hideaway 2 blocks off Ocean Ave, the main drag. It's a lovely neighborhood to walk the dogs. Breakfast was perfect: the quiches were delicious, the coffee was outstanding, and the fresh fruit was wonderful. Even the dogs got biscuits with breakfast!

We stayed in Room 2. The bed was very comfortable with lots of pillows and the shades allowed us late sleepers to get lots of rest. The room was small, but we're not living there. It's a comfortable place to sleep and store our suitcases while we're out exploring! One thing to note: the shower in this room is tiny - about 25" on each side with a low shower head. It worked for us petites, but larger/taller people may want to request a room with a tub.

Happy Landing is ABSOLUTELY dog-friendly! The last reviewer should try Secret Garden Inn in Santa Barbara to understand true pet discrimination.

Dawn is a wonderful hostess. Thank you for a great stay!

P.S. Tall people should book a king bed room if a queen bed is too small.

HLI was recommended here on TripAdvisor as being dog-friendly. There's a limit to their "friendliness," however. Dogs are not allowed on the lawn, and there's no other place for dogs to potty except on the street...and that's after walking down quite a few jagged steps. If your dog needs to go out during the night, this is something you must consider. We stayed in Room #1. Very quaint and cute, but very small. Two tall people plus two small dogs in a queen size bed do not equal a good night's sleep. The shower is extremely small. Owners are very friendly and helpful. Breakfast is brought to your room. EXCELLENT COFFEE!!

We won't be going back to HLI. It isn't a place we'd stay if we were without the dogs, but it isn't dog-friendly enough to bring them. Catch-22.

Owners are wonderful. Our good friends booked this place as they had stayed there before and recommended it. It was a great stay. Beds were very comfortable. Very clean and all our needs were met. Breakfast was top notch. Close to everything in Carmel. Please take note that this is a very old establishment and is well maintained, but If you are expecting fancy hotel amenities, then this would not be your cup of tea. It is a romantic get away, very cozy and all wrapped up in love. We will come back again.

“No heat in room, very bad experience, never again”

Happy Landing Inn

We stayed at the Happy Landing Inn in Feb, 2008. My husband and I were traveling with my 91 year old mother. I called to let the innkeeper know we would not be there until 7-8 PM. When we got there the owner had a envelop with the keys on the door so we never saw her that night. We had 2 rooms and turned up the heat in both because it was chilly that night-I think in the 40s. The next morning my mother said her heater had not worked and her room was so cold she had slept in her coat. Her nose was red from the cold. Our heater had worked so we did not realize how cold her room had been. When we saw the owner that morning and explained that room heater had not worked and my mother had been so cold she just said," You must be a hearty soul." She said my mother should have called her. My mother said how could she do that since the inn does not have telephones in the room. (My mother did not have a cell phone.) The innkeeper gave no apology, no show of concern-nothing. This was very unprofessional.
The rooms we had badly need updating. They were very worn. There was no plug in the bathroom for a hairdryer or shaver. I finally located one next to a chair-but there was no mirror to use nearby. There was a musty smell to the room. To get to the rooms from the parking area you must walk up a steep flight of stairs. This was never mentioned before we arrived and at night was quite dangerous for a senior citizen or anyoe for that matter. The railing was inadequate.
All in all, this was a very bad experience and definately put a damper on our stay in Carmel. We have traveled alot and this place was one of our worst experiences.

Management Response

(Management representative)

We deeply regret that these guests had a bad experience. However, we would like the opportunity to address the complaint. First, all confirmations sent to guests state our check in times and include a request to let us know if they will be arriving after 6pm so arrangements can be made to leave a key. When these guests called they were told the office would be closed and a key would be left. Second, the problem with the heat would have been corrected immediately had it been brought to our attention. There is an emergency after hours number posted on the office door , it is also included in the welcome letter that was provided to these all all late check in guests. When notified of the heating problem the pilot was immediately relit and the problem fixed. A sincere apology was given, we're sorry the guest did not feel it was sincere enough. Third, as noted on our website, our Inn was built in 1926 as a private retreat and some things, like plugs in the bathroom light fixtures, are unique. Finally, we do provide information regarding special needs, such as ground floor or senior access, to all quests who inquire.
Unfortunately our Inn was not a good fit for these guests.

Happy Landing Inn Carmel by The Sea
Date: Nov. 19-22

My daughter and I had a lovely Thanksgiving week trip to Carmel, our first trip there. The Happy Landing Inn was a perfect place for us. Lovely breakfasts and beautiful queen room with a view of the fountain and courtyard.....We did the 17 mile drive and had Thanksgiving Day in Monterrey. So easy to go and come from the great location here at the Inn. I really appreciated having parking available too. We loved staying there.
