“Great B&B for a reunion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 week ago

In October 2014, my wife and I stayed at the Carmel Garden Inn for 5 nights for a reunion with 5 couples. This was an ideal setting for our gathering. The owners, Julian and Susan are very friendly, helpful and did a number of special things for our group to help make the reunion memorable. Our room was the Heather, which is a mini-suite with a private garden patio. The Inn is really beautiful with the gardens and patio. The location is ideal as you can walk to everything but are not in the more congested areas of the Carmel Village. All the employees at the Inn are great, particularly Mary who is there most mornings with her friendly personality and travel tales. This is an ideal place for a romantic getaway for one couple and also for couples traveling together.

Room Tip: The mini-suites with private patios are very nice.

Your words reflect our feelings as well...you and your group made our fall complete! What fun to share with you and enjoy our Inn and our wonderful little village. As i mentioned, we are going to promote groups of folks seeking a larger common area and gardens than most B&Bs afford. Also, because we only have ten rooms, we can make our bistro dining room area available for afternoon/evening get-to-gethers. Thank you for your comments, for staying with us, for sharing your experiences and travels...you are great people to have fun with. From us all, Julian

This is truly a wonderful place to stay.
- The room was spacious and very pretty. It has a fireplace and a sitting area. The bed was really comfortable.
- Afternoon cheese and wine was really good. Breakfast was fantastic with freshly cooked french toast and sausage.
- Staff are very friendly. They shared with you what you need to know to stay in their place, and the surrounding. Also suggesting where to stop on the coastal drive.
- Location was convenient, though we drove out to the beach and the city centre.
- Recommendations were made on where for a good meal.
Overall, we love the experience we had in this place. Thank you for a wonderful stay!

Your review is especially appreciated because as we have more guests stay with us from Singapore, we need to know that what our visitors from Singapore expect is in line with what we offer. Thank you so much! We have more than a hundred and fifty years of living in Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula between us all and we love to share the unusual and special places with our guests. Again thank you for your review and staying with us. Julian

Spent a night in their Lavender Room which boasts a private patio, a cute kitchenette/sitting area, king bed, wood-burning fireplace...First of all, if you are going for a romantic get-away, this room is a great choice: you can snuggle up with a lovely fire (all set and ready to go when you arrive) and the frig allows you to keep some treats on hand. The bed was excellent - one of the best I've had and a surprise for a little B&B. The welcome glass of wine is a nice touch & the breakfast buffet is good (especially their home made granola!) - but the fritata offered was excellent. I found the staff all very welcoming and friendly, and the breakfast room encourages guests to chat. (You can also take your breakfast to one of the common patio areas or back to your room.) It's in a great location - just a few blocks from Ocean, but a quiet, residential area on a small street means it is completely quiet at night. All in all, a solid choice!

Thank you! For your praise of our rooms, gardens, service, food and wine. Since we purchased the Inn, our focus has been on our gardens and food/wine, attempting to bring holiness with quality to your experiences staying with us. Thanks to your review, we know we are continuing to succeed in our endeavor. We have owned five Inns in Carmel and fourteen motels over the past forty years; but we have never had the opportunity to have such a charming setting, quiet, yet steps from all the excellent shops, restaurants and galleries as our Carmel Garden Inn. Again tank you and hope to see you in the future, Julian and all of us here.

Your word "perfect" gives us a lot to live up to. But know that having your review and having all of us read it, says we are succeeding in our efforts to provide a really fine quality experience, not just a good room in which to stay. We love our patio units as you have said. Large roomy and affording a lot of outdoor private space, not usually found in Carmel. Thank you! Julian, Susan, Dennis Mary, Curtis and our housekeeping staff.

This is an older property, converted apartments. The rooms are cramped and most of the furnishings are old (not "antique" old, just old), other than the bed which was new (and VERY nice, thank you).

Breakfast was nice but there was little variety. If you didn't like what they made for you each morning, you had fruit and hard boiled eggs, pretty much.

The best three things about this inn:
1) Location - great place to stay at in Carmel, within easy walking distance of many fine restaurants (and they have parking, which helps).
2) Price was reasonable for the area. Quite reasonable, in fact.
3) Staff was very friendly and helpful. We got some great tips on a new restaurant to try, everyone was very happy to spend some time to talk with you.

The garden is small but nice - October (in a heat wave) isn't the best time to view a garden so there actually was more there than I expected. Our "garden view" room didn't have much of a view, though.

We really appreciate your review. We also certainly agree with the quality of the beds. After spending the night in one of the suites at our Inn, we ordered the same bed for our home that are in all our rooms. And your comments about us and our staff are very rewarding. The housekeepers read the reviews at my encouragement so they get the feed back as well. It sure was hot. Broke records set back 100 years. Helping guests enjoy the finer restaurants in Carmel has been a passion for me especially and Susan and Dennis, Mary too. We all love to eat and drink good wine especially if the tab is reasonable. Since purchasing the Inn in March of 2013, we have focused on completely renovating the five bathrooms in the patio suites and building the new kitchen and dining room in our common area. As we progress along, we expect to continue our upgrades in all the rooms. If you do visit Carmel again and want to experience one of our large patio suites, let us know. Thank you again, Julian

My flight was cancelled out of Monterey and I thought it would be a nice opportunity to spend another night in Carmel. Well, it was time we'll spent at the Carmel Garden Inn. It is just a delightfully charming place. The room was well appointed and certainly spacious enough. A very comfortable bed with top notch linens on bed and in bath. There was a private little courtyard outside our door. There is also a very nice common area to relax and meet if you're in a group. The location is close enough to the shops and restaurants but very quiet. They had a nice breakfast with some very nice homemade biscuits. Very friendly and professional staff. I can't wait to go back.

You certainly have pleased us with both your visit at our Inn and your comments. You have highlighted so many of the results of our efforts over the past 18 months since purchasing the Inn: the beds, linens, bistro dining room, gardens, food and comradery both between and with our guests. Thank you so much, We all look forward to a return visit by you with us. Julian and us all.

This was our first experience in a bed and breakfast so we were not sure what to expect. We were pleasantly surprised from the moment we checked in. Check in was smooth and recommendations for dinner were given when asked. The wine and cheese in the late afternoon was delicious as was the breakfast - try the granola! It was very nice to sit and chat with our fellow travelers from various places. You don't often have that opportunity in a hotel. Our room was very nice - it reminded me of a cabin in the woods, with the beautiful garden view we had. We stayed in the Orchid room and the bed was excellent. Everything was very clean and fresh. The inn is located a bit on the edge of downtown, so you were not in all the crowds yet walking to shopping or the beach was no problem at all. Parking was not a problem here as it seems to be if you stay further into town. All in all, a great stay and we would definitely love to come back.

Susan and i have traveled in Europe and the East Coast of the US many times and we always stay in small inns or Bed and Breakfasts. Your review (thank you very much for this) highlights some of our reasons for selecting B&Bs: nice dining area to meet other guests and talk of shared experiences, no 'canned' air, old world charm in the rooms, usually interesting gardens and almost always good food and personal service. We are fortunate to have recruited our staff who have extensive knowledge of the area and a real appreciation of our village. It is such a pleasure to have your comments. I have all our staff read our reviews including the housekeeping ladies. Gives us all a big smile. Thank you, Julian, Susan, Dennis, Curtis, Mary, Laura and our ladies.
