“Don't Miss The Grape Leaves Here!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2011

This past Tues. night we arrived in Carmel around 10:00 and were pleasantly surprised to find Demetra Cafe one of the only places open for a late bite to eat. We loved the Grape Leaves that were served with a really great dipping sauce and the Bakalava was delicous for dessert. We have enjoyed lunch here before and can't wait to try dinner sometime.

The cafe is always buzzy and energetic, the staff is very friendly also and really seem to enjoy your customers and their restaurant. A gem on Ocean Avenue! :)

“Great Experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2011

We've taken guests here twice for lunch on a recommendation. There was about a 15 minute wait each time. Small, lovely dining spot. Food was excellent & mood was vibrant.
Both times, musicians came out to play a couple numbers--very festive. Food was excellent--we ordered several different items. Service is very attentive. A great experience all the way around.

“Excellent meal and outstanding service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2011

We stopped here for lunch based on TA reviews and were not disappointed. We were greeted warmly at the front door and our table service was top notch. The food is delicious and the musical entertainment was a nice extra. Very comfortable atmosphere.

“Honeymoon at Dametra”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 12, 2011

This is the most fun meal experience in town. The staff is incredibly friendly and make you feel like family. The food was great - we loved the lamb and chicken kababs. While you are there old world songs will be sung to celebrate special occasions - very fun. Make sure to make a reservation in advance as it is small and very busy.

“Festive Atmosphere, good for late evening dining, sticky tables”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2011

We read the reviews and decided that we needed to have Dametra on our list for our 2 night stay in Carmel. We called the day before hand and received 8:30 reservations for a Tuesday evening. We arrived about 15 minutes early because the rest of Carmel shuts down around 6pm and we had run out of window-shopping. The owner greeted us and asked us to have a seat in the side wine bar area and brought us the often-mentioned free glasses of wine.

We were seated promptly, if not a little bit earlier than 8:30. The dining room is narrow but long, invoking a feel of an European Bistro. Tables are close together and the volume is high. There was a large party of 10 or 12 that took up a good portion of the space. The nightly music and dancing began shortly after we were seated. It was festive and the owners and servers encourage the female diners to get up and join them in dancing. I did feel that the cleanliness level was a bit lacking-the table top was sticky to the touch and grossed me out a bit.

We shared an appetizer of stuffed grape leaves. They were very good and served warm with a yogurt dipping sauce. My husband had the famous lamb shank. It was enormous. I ordered the grilled vegetable salad and had falafel added. The salad itself was very tasty but the falafel was horrible. Dry, huge tasteless balls. A pretty green color on the inside, but not worth the additional charge. Wine by the glass was very generous in quantity poured, but I actually enjoyed my complimentary glass more than the glass that I paid for.

We had traveled that day from the East coast, so we were fading fast by 10pm. We could not seem to catch our server's eye to get the check. Then the music performance began again, so we were stuck for an additional 15 minutes until it ended and we could flag down our server. He then brought out "complimentary" dessert, ("I insist that you have this"). I found the baklava to be dry and stale tasting. A nice gesture, but we were so tired that we just could not fully appreciate it.

So to conclude, I'd recommend it if you are looking for a festive atmosphere, especially if you need to dine late, because this is one of a few options of places that are still alive and kicking late into the evening in Carmel. Perhaps the fact that I read so many reviews made me know what to expect, and therefore it was not as "unique" as other people might find the experience.
