We stayed at the La Costa resort from a Monday through a Saturday in early August.
Overall the resort is very nice. I was concerned due to other reviews of this property, but do not let these stop you from staying at the La Costa. There were a few issues, but for the most part they were all easily and promptly addressed by the hotel staff.
The grounds a beautiful, the pools, are good fun, the exercise facility is rivals medium size commercial gym, the breakfast buffet is a nice addition to a room package, the staff is very friendly and helpful, and our two children ages 6 and 9 enjoyed the game room in which many of the games could be played free of charge. Lots of families were staying here which was great for us since we have children. However, if we had been a couple looking for a, quiet, romantic and relaxing get-away, it might have been a different story for us. We left the resort on a Saturday morning. The resort was relatively busy during the week, I have a feeling it is on the brink of crowded on summer weekends.
Details of the Experience, Problems Encountered and Suggestions for Your Visit
We booked online with the hotel website. I had stayed at the property several years ago while on business and I was found the resort and room quite nice and thought it would be a nice treat for my family to stay there for a holiday. However, after reading the online review, I was hesitant to make a reservation. In the end I made a reservation online directly with the hotel. I booked a golf course or garden view "resort room" with the breakfast package. At the time of booking I requested a quiet room on and upper floor. I also included a brief note about my concerns over the poor reviews.
When we arrived in the late afternoon, the check-in process went just fine. We were promptly greeted by the valet who directed us to the front desk. The front desk clerk did her job, but more or less just went through the motions. Not real complaints here, just nothing special about the interaction.
The bell staff was very polite and friendly and took the time to get our stay off to a nice start. True, he was working for a tip, but he made a solid effort to earn it. We settled in and went for an evening swim -nice that the pools are open very late, and then settled in to our room to rest.
Problem #1 and Resolution-The room we were assigned was spacious and had a beautiful marble bathroom. It was also set-up for high-speed internet access. The top of dresser drawer was damaged -not huge deal to me, but a surprise considering the cost of the room. The deal breaker was that our room was at the end of the resort closest to the entrance (building 500). There was quite a bit of road noise and I did not sleep all that great. The next morning when I looked out the window, at the 'garden view" there was a patch of grass below the balcony then a dirt patch then El Camino Real -the main road to enter the property. After breakfast, I went to the front desk, expressed my disappointment and asked to be moved. Since we would be gone for the day we were told if we could pack our belongings, they would relocate us that afternoon. We were relocated to a room that was a short walk from the pools with the water slide (building 800). This room was smaller overall (both bathroom and living space), but was still very nice and plenty big for our family. Overall it was clean and in good repair. Only complaint about the room is that the sleeping pillows are a bit thin.
Problem #2 and Resolution -We had booked a resort room + buffet breakfast. Nice breakfast and good variety of choices, and very tasty for a buffet style breakfast. At checkout additional charges for the buffet for our entire 5 day stay were included on the final bill. When I mentioned the error to the front desk clerk, he said that the reservation he had did not show that breakfast was included. He seemed to be heading down that "I am sorry, but your reservation did not include breakfast" speech. Fortunately, I had still had the reservation confirmation e-mail in my in box. We accessed my e-mail account to prove that there was an error and these charges were removed. I am not sure how this would have been handled if I was not able to provide a copy of this e-mail.
Summary and Suggestions
Aside from these two issues, both of which were addressed, we were quite pleased with the resort. It is clean, comfortable, has beautiful grounds, many amenities, and has a great staff. I would suggest the property to a friend with two suggestions. Request a room away from the front entrance of the resort, and be sure to have some documentation of your reservation details.
