“Pleasantly surprised”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 20, 2013

We decided to stay at Grand Pacific Palisades Resort and Hotel because of its proximity to Legoland, and because they had the best price compared to other places for the 2 nights that we wanted to stay. In the past, we've always opted to stay elsewhere when visiting Carlsbad...but this place is definitely in the running for when we return! Our check-in experience was awesome- the person helping us was very friendly and helpful. The room was a good size (slightly larger than a standard hotel room). Room service came from the on-site Karl Strauss Brewery (the beer-brined bacon is amazing!), and the server was incredibly accommodating. My husband generally dislikes any housekeeping services to take place while we are absent from the room, so we had put up the "Privacy Please" door hanger. When we returned, there was a basket of replacement toiletries and towels waiting for us at our door. We've never before experienced such thoughtfulness while staying at a hotel! Overall, it was a pleasant experience and one of the rare times when our choice of hotel significantly added to the enjoyment of a quick getaway weekend!

We stayed in a 2 bedroom, 2 bath timeshare suite on the 3rd floor with a well stocked kitchen, comfortable beds, comfortable living room with a distant view of the pacific ocean. All was going very well until on the 3rd day we turned the A/C on for about 10 minutes. A terrible damp (like old wet towels or wet sheet rock) smell came through the vents and remained for the rest of the week even though we turned the A/C off. It seemed to be strongest in the master bathroom and bedroom. I immediately felt my throat get sore and came down with an upper respiratory infection. So did my husband. My son and his girlfriend joined us for a few days and she said her eyes were bothering her as if she was having an allergic reaction. In all fairness to the resort, I did not report this until after I left because I felt we already had the colds and didn't want to unpack and move to another suite.(although in hindsight, we probably should have done just that!) I gave the resort 4/5 because I am going to assume this was an isolated incident and everything else about the resort was very nice. Just beware of room 352!
The Good Things:
1. There is a nice restaurant on the property that also delivers room service.
2. The adult pool and hot tub were very nice with a beautiful view of the ocean.
3. There is a convenient business center free of charge.
4. Nice underground parking
5. This is a great place for families with children. They have an arcade room, a game room, 2
great jungle gyms, one on dry land and one with water falls, a family pool, and more. My
son commented that he would have loved this place when he was a kid.
6. Carlsbad Village is a beautiful quaint beach town with nice restaurants and a boardwalk
along the beach. This is a few miles from the resort.
7. Right next door to the resort is Legoland
8. 1/4 mile away is the Carlsbad Premium Outlets.
9. La Jolla is about a 20 minute drive and San Diego is about a 40 minute drive.
10. There is the museum of making music right down the road and Carlsbad flower fields next
door.
All in all, this would have been perfect had we not had the problem with the dampness (mold?) in the room.

Room Tip: Choose the 3rd floor ocean view but check out the ventilation system.

We just had an outstanding visit to Carlsbad at the Grand Pacific Palisades Resort. Our 1 bedroom condo was well maintained and the service was outstanding. The location is great and the staff provided great suggestions for food and sight seeing in the local area. Great place for a get-a-way!

There are plenty of great local dining choices.

Room Tip: We had a quiet 1 floor room (#146) near the lobby near the adult pool and not far from the elevator...

We stayed two nights at Grand Pacific Palisades. A beautiful hotel with pacific views. We were in the main hotel party and it was a little noisy, but with kids that is to be expected. I was worried because I had read reviews about the staff bothering guests about listening to the RCA time share talks. I got a call the day before we left and told them that we had limited time there. That was that. We had to catch the hotel van to Legoland because the walkway was not open. Be sure to sign up for the time you need to travel as there is a list. We just had to give them a call when we were coming back from Legoland. Longest wait was 15 minutes.

Hotel activities sounded fun, but all had an extra charge. We went to Karl Straus both mornings for breakfast. Very good.

Room Tip: Pacific view

We purchased this timeshare as we live in the area and visit it regularly. It has been a great investment. Even if you just staying there through the hotel, an exchange or rental, it is a great place to stay. The pools are very nice and there is separate Adult pool and Family pool with water play area (our grandkids love this). Saturdays and Sundays late afternoon the family can make Smores at the adult pool (3 for $2)and there are many other activities for everyone.

It is across the street from Legoland close to the beach, Carlsbad Outlet Mall, and Costco is across the other street if you need anything. A good place to eat nearby is TipTop Restaurant. IT is a short drive to San Diego and you can catch the train nearby in Carlsbad to take to downtown San Diego or in Oceanside to Los Angeles.

If you visit in April and early May the Carlsbad Flower Fields will be blooming and are next to the resort.

The staff are very helpful and are always pleasant to talk to.

You will enjoy your stay here.

Room Tip: Check in early and ask for an upgrade to an Ocean View.

Easy access from basement carpark. Comfortable stay and nice artistic touches in the hotel room. Nice restaurant although its not in the same building as the hotel. Very close to LEGOLAND. Would recommend it.

Bought here years ago sight unseen. Was a good move. It didn't seem like it had been updated in a long time, but one can tell there is care for the property. Customer service is excellent, and parking was nice and close by.

This facility felt older, but compared with some other "Gold Crown RCI" facilities we have stayed at, this one beats most of the others we have stayed at in Florida and Las Vegas. Recently it partnered with the Hilton Grand Vacations Club, so it should gradually be upgraded. We have received newsletters outlining announcements of updates-eg flat panel TVs, new updates to the pool area.

Carlsbad is a fantastic vacation town, we never felt the need to drive into SD or LA soley for 'good seafood' or activities. Obviously these places have everything mentioned, but Carlsbad is a super choice for family vacation. We have been here for one week in 2012 and now completing a week here in 2013, and find ourselves leaving again, taking notes on what to do 'the next time we are here.'

Everything from Coronado Island to the LA/Hollywood/Santa Monica Pier/Temecula Wine Country is
easy from here. There are even full blown casinos within about an hour's drive-not easy in the dark-lots of mountainside driving. Dining, shopping, sightseeing, theme parks-you name it, they have it, and its an easy drive.

This will be a definite return site for us. We upgraded our ownership, and plan on using it here.
Orlando FL really paled in comparison for family vacation spot. Much much more here to do, and since it has Disneyland, I feel Orlando has no advantages except maybe warmer weather.
