We have stayed here before, and decided to come back a third time. We were a bit hesitant based on some of the reviews we had been seeing here, but after our 13 night stay I would still return. Here is a summary of the pros and cons.
PROS:
The rooms are great, we get a full kitchen and save $ but not having to eat out for all meals. The beds are super comfy, including the sofabed for the kids (not sure re:other posts saying the opposite). The bathroom is outdated, but clean and functional. There are 2 TV's, one for the kids in the kitchen/living room, and one for us in the bedroom. The pool and hot tub are spotlessly clean, warm, and surrounded by a waterfall feature and lush plants. A mini oasis in a courtyard style, very inviting after a day walking arounf Legoland. The hotel is a nice residential area, close to grocery and beack, very safe and clean.
CONS:
If you are a very light sleeper, the noise from the highway could bother you, but you can avoid this by requesting a room away from the freeway. We had family members stay at a more expensive place right on the beach, and noise was still an issue for them due to people and the trainpassing by very often right through town where it had to blow its whistle. Cali is a busy place..expect some noise ! There did seemto be a lack of towels, both in the rooms and for the pool. In previous visits, pool towels were available poolside on the lounge chairs, with a basket to drop them off. Now you have to ask (they almost never had any available) and they want you to bring them back to the front office ?bizarre?.
Summary:
For the price, location, pool, and comfort of the room, I still don't think you can find a better family oriented place to stay in Carlsbad. I wish they would buy some more towels, as this is a nusiance. We ALWAYS had hot water. I think people may have had trouble understanding the knobs in the shower, the adjustment handle for the temp needs to be changed, you can't leave it in one spot and expect to have perferct water temp everyday !
Breakfast room gets crowded, as it would anywhere that offers continental free breakfast, but there are plenty of seating outside, or bring your things back up to the room. This may be annoying but should not deter anyone from staying here.
Staff friendly and helpful, My husband fell ill one evening in the middle of he night and the front desk man was quick to provide me with the info as to where the closet ER was, asking if I needed assistance, ambulance. etc.
Definitely busier on the weekends than during the week, but after 13 nights, I can say we have a pretty good sense of the place.
Room Tip: Ask for room away from highway
Pick up pool towels early in the day even if for later on

What a fantastic review. Someone staying 13 nights sure does understand the hotel in every situation. I appreciated that you highlighted lots of the features that we focus on. Clean, spacious rooms that are great for families. The best pool and spa in the neighborhood and heated all year. Plus I think our location is perfect. You are one block from the beach and only one mile from Legoland. I think most people would prefer to be centrally located between the two areas. Thanks again for your review and you return business. All the best, Cris
