“Great deal, great hotel, pleasant staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 19, 2011

We stayed at the Homewood Suites in Carlsbad, our 2nd experience with Homewood, and we were extremely pleased. We are big fans of Embassy Suites, but there isn't a Embassy located in Carlsbad. Homewood gives us the same ammenities as the Embassy, just downscaled and simplified, but the price also reflects this. We travel with 2 children, so having the separate bedroom with a door is a must. We love the full fridge and kitchenette and the breakfast (downscaled from the Embassy breakfast-no made to order omelet bar, pancakes or sausage & bacon) provided us with everything we needed (eggs, potatoes, biscuits, waffles, cereals, oatmeal) for 2 adults, a toddler and a baby just starting on table foods. My only complaint was that I wish they had more fresh fruit for our kids, just apples and oranges, which is a bit challenging for a 9 mo old. Bananas & melons would have been preferred. Our room was very well designed with the bathroom in the bedroom, it was quiet and very comfortable. The staff was all very pleasant and helpful. We plan on seeking out Homewood Suite locations for our future vacation plans. My son missed the glass elevators and Koi in the lobby (like at the Embassy), but for ~$80 less a night, I am OK with skipping those features. If you stay Mon - Thurs they have a light dinner and happy hour. We miss the Saturday evening Happy hour that Embassy provides, but they have a little convenience "store" in the lobby and we bought a very reasonable priced decent bottle of wine for us to enjoy in our room (which is stocked with a bottle opener) and we were very happy to enjoy a couple of glasses after our kids went to sleep in the family room area. The family room is also big enough to pull out the sofa sleeper and our pack & play and still not feel crowded. I feel that we will be regular guests of the Homewood brand of hotels. Location is a bit inland, so if you are looking for a beach location, this isn't it. It is located near a commerce area of Carlsbad, but still only about 5 min from Legoland which was the reason for our visit.

I travel on business weekly, and this is the nicest Homewood Suites I've stayed at (I stayed 4 nights in September, 2011). Every person on staff I encountered was pleasant and cordial, whether walking down the hall (they said "Hello" as they looked me in the eye), being served a beer during dinner time (4 beers on tap, and 4 wines each evening), and during check-in and check-out. My room was fresh and neat (not worn and tired like many Homewood Suites), and the king bed seemed new (none of the permanent indentations older beds have).
The hotel was busy with many guests, but food never ran out during meals and the trash cans were emptied before they overflowed.
The hotel is directly across the street from the Palomar Airport (mainly private planes), but I don't remember hearing any noise while in my room - I did hear a few planes while eating outside and swimming in the pool.
I hope I get to stay at this hotel again!

Enjoyed my stay here - my business associate and I had a great time enjoying the accommodations. It's in a great location with shopping and restaurants close driving distance.

Feeding a teen, 2 tweens and 2 adults on a vacation can be expensive. Homewood Suites saved us a bundle and our family of 5 was VERY comfortable. We took advantage of free breakfast (including hot stuff), free dinner (also hot + veggies!), free wifi, free biz center, free shuttle (VERY convenient), free popcorn, free beer including local selections and free Tide for our laundry ($1.25/load). The pool is not huge but big enough for fun and they have a handicap access chair for the hot tub. The fitness room is clean and efficient. I felt like they know their family customer - they created a gameroom in one of their conference rooms and offer popcorn as well as coffee in each of the rooms.

Complaints: I would prefer a harder mattress and our first room had a broken pull-out couch. We reported it and were moved the next night to another room. The staff even moved our stuff for us.

The efficiency kitchen is the best way for a family like ours to save money for other things on our vacation. Staff is friendly and the manager is a great golfer so perfect for our golfing family.
Disclosure: we were offered a media rate for our stay but the opinions in this review are my own.

Room Tip: Ask for quiet rooms

Our family stayed for the Labor Day weekend; and although we have stayed at other Hilton- associated hotels before, we had not stayed at a Homewood Suites. This hotel is newly constructed and about a mile or more from Legoland, about 2 miles from the Carlsbad Village and a 30 minutes drive from San Diego. The suite had a large bedroom, in addition to the living area with a sleeper sofa. That arrangement met our expectations well. There is a stocked kitchen with utensils for cooking and a 2-burner stove and large refrigerator. The table could use a couple of chairs more since only 2 are provided, while the suite accommodates more than 2.

A breakfast is offered and has a great deal of variety. The only problem during our stay occurred at the breakfast when a few adults got unruly and barged into lines aggressively and then kept others from using the appliances. An employee from the front desk stepped up and had to control the crowd that Sunday. It was not like this hotel scrimped on its breakfast offerings. Some of the guests probably act this way in their own homes. The hotel also offers snack dinners Monday through Thursday, which is a big help to travelling families, as they make chicken strips, hot dogs, hamburgers, pasta and such - a help to a family budget.

The pool is well-maintained, the grounds are pleasant, and this place is very clean at all times. Staff are very well-trained and helpful. For the price, with an AAA or other discount, this place is within budget for groups or families. We would certainly use this chain in other locales also.

We have stayed at this hotel for several years and have been very pleased. The staff are friendly, breakfast is great and for us the location is also great.

Would not that while the hotel is newer, it is starting to look a little rough around the edges (stains on wall, stain on duvet cover, hole in couch, etc.).

Have always noticed plenty of families at this location (given proximity to Legoland). With a hotel full of families you do hear a fair bit of noise. With three children, we are used to active children; however, our children are generally very quiet. We had a message from the front desk that we were making too much noise in the mornings. Not possible, given we went straight from bed to breakfast and then left the hotel each day. We did hear noise around us (children running in the hall and people above us seemed to rearrange their furniture early each morning).

Great place if you get a good rate. Breakfast is good, staff is friendly, location is good. Negatives, need to expect lots of families and the noise that brings and room interiors are starting to show their age.
