I hesitate in giving out 5 stars as that means the best of the best, but there is nothing I can fault Bistro West for, it was a delight for my taste buds. The restaurant is very comfortable and has a bit of an upscale feel.
We went for lunch so it was a little more casual, but don't get me wrong most of the people dining here at lunch were business professionals. The restaurant is a bit expensive, but I am not going to complain. There are restaurants out there that claim Farm to Table and when asked where their produce comes from is a local farm they can't tell me. Bistro West is an authentic Farm to Table. Our waiter was prompt, attentive and could tell us how the dishes were prepared, where their farm is and even how many people they have working at the farm. 90% of the produce is farm fresh and you can tell.
We ordered the squash blossoms to begin with and they were lightly battered and fried, yet there was no grease not did they taste greasy. They were filled with a creamy herb laced goat cheese laid on a bed of fresh made pesto, cherry tomatoes, and Chiodini mushrooms. Not a drop of anything was left on the plate. Next....I couldn't resist the beet salad and I loved the different textures and flavor of the salad. The beets were nicely diced, served on a bed of freshly picked baby lettuces and also had walnuts, diced apple and baby mandarin oranges. A beautiful piece of fried goat cheese on top with a lovely orange vinaigrette, I couldn't stop eating it, everything had so much flavor and a depth of flavor you don't get with bagged lettuce. I also ordered the Pear, Gorgonzola, Prosciutto and Blue Cheese pizza. For some reason I had in my head it was a small flatbread, boy was I wrong. It was a full size pizza. I managed to savor a slice and had them box the rest for dinner tonight. Again it was served with a bit of fresh greens on top and was incredible.
Mr. B ordered the Lasagne and I had to taste it, it was nicely seasoned again with levels of flavor. There wasn't a bit left, so I know he loved it. He had the lunch portion which was served with a Caesar salad. He is in the Carlsbad area frequently on business and is thrilled to have a new place to go with clients that appreciate great food and consider themselves "foodies". I will definitely be back!
