Brought back memories of Saturday mornings watching Cisco Kid.
Pancho's ranch and out buildings are now part of a state park.

“Hidden piece of history in Carlsbad”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2012

While staying in the area for the winter months and preparing a list of local places to which we could take our visitors, we found the Carrillo Ranch listed. We never did have the time to bring our guests here, but within the week after they departed, my husband and I decided that we should visit this historic site. Leo Carrillo was an actor in old movies and on broadway from the 1920's to 1950, but he is probably best known to those of us over 60 as Pancho, sidekick of the Cisco kid. Leo came to the Carlsbad area to find a site to build his old California-style ranch as a place to relax and entertain.
The property is actually maintained by the Carlsbad Department of Parks and Recreation and is listed as a California Historic Site as well as being on the National Register of Historic Places. It exists in a valley in the midst of some residential neighborhoods of Carlsbad. There is a large parking area and level paths around the property where several original buildings of the ranch form a mini settlement. We visited on a week day, so the home structures were closed, but a young park attendant found us walking around enjoying the peafowl. (We never knew that the peacock, of course, is the male; likewise the peahen is the female. Hence the term peafowl encompasses both sexes.) There are over two dozen of them on the property, and they are the descendents of those that Leo had brought here.
The park employee opened the new barn visitor center for us and another visitor and showed the video of Leo Carrillo's life. The main room of the barn was decorated with old movie posters of his films and set with several director's chairs, two of which were labeled for Pancho and Cisco. Although he was too young to have experienced Carrillo while he was alive, the attendant seemed able to bring him back to life with his enthusiasm.
The day we were there was the quintessential clear, sunny San Diego day so it was a very pleasant experience. We spent about an hour walking around and watching the video. Some of the walkways and steps are uneven, so it's advisable to wear comfortable shoes. Older children might enjoy the area, and it would be a great teaching experience. No dogs are allowed. Be prepared to hear the cat-like cry of the peafowl, and bring your camera!
