We always try to eat at the Pacific Coast Grill on our annual visits to San Diego. Its location is superb, right on the beach, and in winter lights illuminate the breakers as they roll in, and the birds as they fly low above the breakers. You really need to book here (but don't be put off if you cannot reserve a table online - call them, as we did when online we were told it was fully booked. The only problem we had this time was that we were told we would have to wait about 20 minutes for our reserved outside table. When we said this was unacceptable, we were shown to a table next to a window, which would have been all right, but it was next to a table of four extremely loud ladies! Suddenly we were offered an excellent table outside. Indeed if you want a quiet evening when you can hear what your companions are saying, reserve an outside table, as inside can be very noisy. We decided to share an appetiser - the shrimp dumplings - that was a mistake, as they were quite small, and utterly delicious! The scallops were superb, as was the coconut crusted mahi mahi, and the seared ahi. As it was my birthday, I was offered a free white chocolate bread and butter pudding; not my favourite, but the chocolate cake with coffee ice cream was enough for at least two people, and quite delicious. The wine list is extensive, but quite pricey. Service was very good, once we got over our initial problem of the table. This is a great place to eat on a special occasion.
