This used to be one of our favorite spots to camp, but in the past few years the State Park system has managed trash the place.
For example they have removed a lot of the trees and vegetation that used to help separate the sites and it seems they are trying to turn it into a wide open parking lot.
The wooden food lockers are not even close to being water resistant, so if it rains and you have food in them expect it to get soaked. The lockers and trash cans all need clips, as currently all they do is make it easier for the raccoons to locate food and trash and do nothing to prevent them from getting at it.
While the Park Service was ripping down the trees, they did not even consider leveling the sites, so trying to find a flat spot to put a tent can be tough in a lot of the sites. They also have placed many of the picknick tables in low spots so that when it rains the tables are in and/or surrounded by water.
It seems as if here, as in most State Parks, the Park Service is catering mostly to the RV crowds, more hook-ups, higher fees and less tent space. A prime example is, you can tow in a trailer or fifth wheel and take up as much space as you like in a site and it will not cost extra, but if you have two cars in site there is an extra fee for the second vehicle. Why? it takes up less space then a 5th wheel or trailer but….
Also the campground hosts, always favor RV's over tents, so an RV can run a generator or pretty much have free reign while tent campers are scrutinized for any infraction. We had a car that had one wheel about 2" off of the asphalt and the Host insisted we move it "RIGHT NOW" while a 5th wheel and truck combo three sites down was not bothered at all that there rig was parked in the dirt.
Basic site fees have gone way up, (starting at $35/night for a basic site with one car), yet, except for adding more hook-ups for the RV crowd, there have not been many improvements for the rest of us.
The higher ups in the Park Service should be required to actually camp in the parks they manage a couple of weeks a year!!
