“+ neat jungle-like setting, + cozy bar and restaurant, + good happy hour and specials, + friendly and attentive staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 4, 2012

The Shadowbrook is a unique restaurant located on a hill above Soquel Creek. It is embedded in a jungle like setting with huge ferns and other tropical plants and spreads over several levels from the street down to the creek shore.

Besides a white table cloth restaurant the Shadowbrook features a very cool bar the “Rock Room”. This is also the place where the Happy Hour and Specials are offered like their $12 Burger & Beverage Monday, Tuesday Happy Hour and more.

So far I only tried the food in the bar and I highly recommend their burgers, their grilled mussels, and their brick oven pizza. Friends of mine went to the fancy restaurant and weren’t impressed. They recommended to stay with the bar food which is less expensive and tastes better. Overall the service is great. Very attentive and friendly!

When you get here at least do a ride with their tiny cable car that descends from the top to the bar. Moreover walk down the stairs to the creek shore and enjoy the view over the cottages on the opposite.

Average entrée Rock Room: $15.
Average entrée restaurant: $30.

“Unique”

Good menu with a great location - feed the ducks and you may be better fed by the restaurant.
Just kidding, but borderline truth.
My wife and I have had mixed results eating at Shadowbrook.
We plan on returning.

“Go for the ambience, the food is average.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 29, 2012

We had our family Thanksgiving lunch at Shadowbrook. First off, I will say that the service was very good and that the wine list offered a good selection. The ambience is nice and quaint, but the food was kind of a let down. Some people had prime rib, some had the turkey Thanksgiving special, but nothing, including the starters (calamari, artichoke hearts, bacon wrapped prawns) and deserts (pumpkin pie, apple pie), was very good. There was no thought about presentation - very basic as if you were in a cafeteria. The prime rib was really just OK, not seasoned, not quite the right temperature. The pies did not seem home made, as if they could have been purchased from the grocery store. This may all seem very picky, but Shadowbrook is not inexpensive. For the cost of our meal, I expected the quality of the meal to meet or exceed the ambience. We are often in Santa Cruz to visit family, so I am aware that this is one of the better restaurants in the area. However, it seems like they are relying on their past reputation rather than making the effort to ensure a great overall dining experience to bring people back.

“Used to be pretty cool...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 20, 2012

This was once the coolest place to take a date in Santa Cruz if you could afford it. The food was great, the little tram car up and down the hill made it special and the wait staff made you feel important...even if you were not..... Food is still good....the tram is still there ...it's just not cool anymore...
