“The unique gem of the Ricon de la Vieja area”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 6, 2010

I have stayed at the Hacienda now for the past 3 years. Each time for 3 days with a group of High school students. The Hacienda is a unique blend of a working ranch/ hotel. They have certainly improved the food and hotel to make it more comfortable. The rooms are air conditioned and very comfortable. The personal are very friendly and always willing to assist you in any way possible. Some of the staff do not speak english but I never had any trouble having any question or concern dealt with rapidly and effiecently through the main desk, Now, one has to keep in mind that this a working ranch. So yes, there are some animal noises or smells around the sable area. It is the fact that the Hacienda is a working ranch that makes it so special. The hotel offers a variety of adventure activities that are well worth the price. The Hacienda is ideally located a few kilometers from the national park. I recommend this hotel if you are looking for a unique Costa Rican experience. This is why I come back year after year and all my high students always have a positive experience.

The perfect place to tap all the energy you got, accompanied by the best views of Rincon de la Vieja volcano all in full contact with nature.
The service is excellent, the guides are very well prepared, not to mention the delicious food served at your typical restaurant.
The springs are best, volcanic mud is excellent .....
Truly a place you should not miss!

Extremely adventurous and people are "pura vida". The canopy can be enjoyed for children as well as teenagers and adults.

This was my fourth day in Costa Rica and the trip was absolutely amazing. When we first arrived the sounds of the birds and insects were delightful as were the hammocks that were outside of every room, a bonus after a 4 hour bus ride. The staff that greeted us were as equally impressive with the welcome drink, a pineapple blend, and their friendly smiles while answering our many questions about internet services to pool towels. The pool was open late and we chatted it up with all the cool frogs, or toads rather, and the many interesting insects, we even saw a Toucan! They had some hotel dogs that were quite entertaining and the food was pretty good too. They didn't mind our late night wondering around to try and catch some bugs and the security made us feel pretty safe. What was most interesting was the early wake up to milk a cow, something I have never done before. We even saw how they made cheese. Beautiful scenery and the hike to waterfalls were breathtaking. The rooms where very nice, the showers were huge with hot water, a wonderful surprise after coming straight out of the cloud forest, and the beds were pretty comfortable. To be honest by the next night we were so exhausted from the hikes that sleep came very easily! We had control over our A.C and the TV worked great. Overall a wonderful experience!!

I just came back from Hacienda Guachipelin, and as ussual new stuff is happening, I've visited Hacienda Guachipelin for almost 14 years now, first time I went there were some 4 rooms and just one bathroom!!! Now not just that it became a much prettier place but every time I visit this hacienda there is something new. The new Canopy ride is 100% adventure, longer, nicer cables. I only have one regret...not enough time to do it all, I really enjoyed the natural hot springs in Rio Negro, I don't know any other place like this in the world, hot water coming out a canyon and between them a gorgeous river, not the same temperature !! Good thing all their horses are nice and calm so they didn't wreck all the wonders I received from the hot waters.
Can't wait to go back

We stayed here not because the amenities, but because of its location to Rincon. The hotel is very basic and outdated but it served its purpose. I'll remember this hotel mainly for the resident blue heelers that greet you every morning. (Shhh, but I even let one sleep in our room one night). Stay here for a night or two if you are interested in exploring Rincon de la Vieja. Their adventure package is an amazing deal! That is worth the stay alone! Don't expect frills and you won't be dissapointed!

I will give it to you honestly, i will tell you the good and bad. First and foremost I have to say the people are very friendly and willing to serve you the absolutely the best they can. Our housekeeper was amazing Betzabe, she mad the cutest animals with flowers every day that we where there. It truly was a great touch to our stay. The food was ok, they had baked chicken every day that we were there, which was 4 days. Not much flavor to the food, but it was fresh, and a lil salt and pepper and you'll be fine. The activities which are done by Adventure tours are amazing, we went horse backriding and tubing, downfall you have to carry this gigantic tube up down a really steep climb and its a narrow path so a little scary. Totally worth it though,(boyfriend carried my tube, for most of the way), we also went ziplining, it was scary but our giude Gabriel took me across all 9 lines, 1 of a kind experience ,all should do it, if ur scared and terrified of heights the guide will hook himself to you and take you across the line. The next day we paid an extra $25 and went horse back riding down to the waterfalls this is a private excursion, just my boyfriend and I with the guide. The guide was great didnt rush us while we swam and enjoyed the crystal clear waterfalls. The spa and thermal waters where very nice and relaxing. The simbiosis where you paint the mud on your body is very different and it leaves your skin very smooth. Try it!.. Now on to the not so great. The bed is horrible, one of the worst I ever had. The towels seem to have been used for decades, There is no shampoo and soap bars, like one is normally used to having during a hotel stay. The linens are all very used and old and the bed is hard as can be, just horrible sleep after you have been doing activities all day. Please do yourself a favor and get the superior room, it was a bigger bathroom, and a TV.. The standard room has a tiny, really tinny shower that its a pain getting into, and no Tv to watch. The superior room has a TV, even though its from the 1970's, and has a big shower that 2 can shower in. Hey it' vacation a lil romance makes your stay a lil sweeter! They make a great income from the hacienda, they just need to invest a little money into the rooms, with new beds and linens and towels and add the neccessary standard toiletries and this place would be amazing!!!
