“Best part of our trip!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 27, 2009

We arrived and got great service from staff and the owner, they treated us like family. Did the all day adventure package, definitely worth the $$! Kids ages 9 and 11 were entertained and thrilled the whole time! Great location, beautiful scenery, great food, clean comfortable rooms, charming hotel. Lots to do. Swimming, hiking, volcano, adventure tours, including zip lines, tubing, waterfalls, horseback riding. They even have a hotsprings and volcanic mud spa! Can't wait to go back! Would recommend to everyone.

This is a good, clean, safe and relaxing hotel at the entrance to the national park. If you are looking for the Four Seasons with fluffy pillows and a chocolate at your bedside, this is not your hotel. If you need Spectravision in your room, stay somewhere else. If you show up and say, okay I'm here, now entertain me, you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for a safe, quiet, real place to take your family, then this is the place for you. If you need to party with the backpackers, go elsewhere. If you want to enjoy nature, if you want to ride horses (on kid-friendly horses) while staying at a working ranch, this is the place. The rooms are spartan, clean and comfortable. There is a pool for the kids, but no water park. For the water park (rafting and ziplines), you have to actually leave the hotel and have the adventure. The food is nourishing and "tipico," but not avant guarde or haut cuisine. The hotel is not all that easy to get to, and the road to the hotel from Liberia can be an adventure. But then what remote retreat is on the highway?

Our kids are 9, 11, 13, and 15. We went horseback riding, and I didn't have to worry about the kids for a moment. We did the zip lines, and felt safe at every step with the attentive and friendly staff. We took meals at the restaurant, and while we didn't think we were in Paris' latin quarter, the food was just fine. We all had a great time, and while this hotel shouldn't be the only place you visit in Costa Rica, it can be a good a part of a Costa Rican visit.

I'd like to preface my review by saying that all experiences are influenced by expectation. I was not expecting much from this place and the reviews are pretty much accurate, so I was not overly disappointed. The food here is just eatable and the rooms are bare (no alarm, no toiletries). They give you a key to the safe but warn you that you will have to pay $100 if you lose it. We laughed at the safe when we saw it as it was barely big enough to fit my wallet. The rooms were very clean though, and we had no problems with theft.

Do not do the canyoning adventure if you are even mildly afraid of heights!!! I found it terrifying but my friend enjoyed it. It's definitely a rush, and quite a bit more physically demanding than I thought.

The only other thing I can add is that this area is not overly rich in things to see compared to the rest of Costa Rica. I chose this place because of its remote location, in order to see more wildlife. We didn't see too much except for some cool trees, and it rained heavily when we were at the Rincon de la Vieja National Park. There are a lot of rocks and roots and it's quite dangerous to hike here when it's wet. I believe the park would be closed under these conditions anywhere in North America.

I would recommend this place to anyone who is very interested in the tours and for no other reason. They do have shuttles coming in from most other hotels in the area for the tours so it is not necessary to stay here.

We stayed here for 4 nights in October 2009. Found it a great place to stay, as close to the park entrance as you can get, comfortable and clean. Nice people, from the owner to the ranch hands and security guard, all were very hospitable and friendly. Our kids were in love with the friendly Australian cattle dogs they had at the hotel. They were finishing up their renovations and adding a new block of rooms at the main courtyard garden, which is where the rooms closest to the volcano are. We could see they are very serious about keeping their property in top condition and improving and embellishing whereever they can. We stayed in 2 rooms on that main courtyard side. These rooms are probably the nicest with the beautiful view of the volcano. The rooms were simple but good and clean, with AC, cable TV and they all had their private hammock. Nice huge garden with lots of flowers, grass lawns and a gorgeous big tree in the middle. Plenty of space for the kids to roam around. The hotel is on a huge property of land and as a guest you have access to al the activities on it. Several waterfals, nice hiking rails, Rio Negro hot pools, the Symbiosis nature spa with volcanic mud baths etc. The road that runs through it, leads up to the park entrance. There's so much to be explored on the private property, and so much beauty within it, that you could almost forget there's also a park to go into as well. We loved being so close to everything. After a hike we could just go back to refresh and then if we felt like it, at last minute decide to go for another dip in the mud baths and hot springs again, we were so close. Something you could not do that easily staying elsewhere... Also they have their activities center that offers top notch activities. Tubing on the river (the best ever!), rapelling, ziplining, cliff climbing, horseback riding etc. It seems tour operators bring in guests from elsewhere to do the activities here. So staying here at the Hacienda you are right at the center of it all!

This hotel was a real disappointment. We had three different rooms--they couldn't decide where to put us, despite our reservation booked more than a month in advance. We booked a room with two beds and were asked why we needed two beds--and not very politely.

We were finally given a room, it did not have towels, pillow cases, a remote for the TV or the climate control. Never did they apologize and they acted as though they were doing us a favor. The last straw was the knock at the door at 8:30 am, when housekeeping told us that they MUST clean the bathroom in 10 minutes and needed to have access to the room. The area of the ranch/resort were we stayed was noisy and staff started making noising really early.

If you don't want to purchase the $18 lunch or dinner buffet (which compared to the average price of a lunch in CR in VERY expensive), then make plans in advance. We opted to eat dinner at the pizza/ snack bar--while we were there a light bulb fell out of the ceiling and missed my daughter's head by a matter of inches--really scary and again, no one bothered to check on us despite the fact that the staff saw and heard this happen. The food at the snack bar was pretty awful and dinner there took FOREVER.

The breakfast that came with the room was pretty poor--very little care seemed to be taken in the preparation of the food, the tables were dirty, we had to ask for water and silverware.

Overall, it was a really unpleasant stay and I would have a very hard time recommending the hotel. However, we did use the spa up the road and found it to be incredible and enjoyed it immensely.

I highly recommend staying at this unique, wonderful & fun place in Liberia called: Hacienda Guacipelin. It is a hidden gem! This place is a working cattle & horse ranch and on acres of beautiful, majestic land! (One even has the option of waking up at 5:30 a.m. & help milk the cows!) We just returned from a 15-day adventurous journey through the area and this Hacienda had the best "Adventure Tour" pkg. anywhere. This fun place was recommended to me from a friend who use to live in Costa Rica ~ a "hot-tip " from an ex-pat/local! Our entire family agrees that it was super worth staying there. We loved their thrilling & safe 19 platform zip-line ~ it was a beautiful rain forest, guides were all professional & it was exhilarating! We then went horse-back-riding & their horses are spunky & sweet! We rode about an hour to where we got off to go Tubing down a Class 2 and 3 River -- super lovely! After this there was a fresh, scrumptious lunch and then off to their natural, mineral hot springs that flows from the Rinco de la Vieja Nat'l Park. Ahhhh, what a day! Another day we hiked to some of the most beautiful waterfalls I have ever seen! Swimming under a waterfall is a must ~ nothing like the fresh, amazingly blue, refreshing water to swim in ~ one of those moments I will treasure! The Howling Monkey's were fun & comical to watch, the flora & fauna were wild and prolific and the day was perfect! The Hacienda also has super comfortable and charming hammocks placed outside your bedroom door in a nicely landscaped courtyard ~ inviting to relax in, read a book or take your siesta! The service was perfect & friendly, the other visitors were kind and happy, their food ~ healthy and tasty and the Adventure Tour the BEST! Great place for a family to bond, get R & R, and an all around special, magical spot! Our three teenagers would agree -- A SPECIAL SPOT!!!!

Highlight of our trip. Like Disney World except real. Did the zip line (only 3 in group) and horse back riding in AM. Sometime difficult to understand instruction. Lunch buffet okay. Did Canyoning and tubing in afternoon. Important to bring water shoes and bathing suit as we had to use our sneakers. Both of the afternoon activities kind of scarry - not for faint hearted or out of shape
