“little slice of luxury”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

This was by far the best place I've ever stayed in Costa Rica. The room was spacious and clean, the bed was super comfortable, and the views were amazing. Service was professional and very attentive, but never stiff. The pool area is great for relaxing, and they have a neat little nature trail that would be great for families, or folks not looking to do a big hike. I also did a horseback riding excursion to some nearby waterfalls, and it was great. Our guide was really knowledgable, stopping to tell us about local plants and animals. The location is beautiful, each morning I ate breakfast watching tropical birds and lizards in the trees surrounding the restaurant.
My only complaint is the food situation. The hotel is far from anything else, and so you have to eat there, either at the pool, or in the restaurant. The food is expensive for what it is, and not that great. It was fine for the two nights that I was there, but I would not have wanted to eat at the restaurant again. Portions are small, and the food is average. With a bit of work on the food situation, this would be a top-notch spot.

Perhaps my expectations were too great. After looking online for a place to stay near Rincon de la Vieja, I settled on the Hotel Borinquen. According to most of the reviews here and elsehwere, it seemed to be the best place in the area. Which is a bummer.

When we arrived, we were pleasantly surprised. They had upgraded our room to a villa. It was nice. The room was really beautiful and I remember thinking "Those people that left bad reviews must be typical Americans with expectations of first world luxury." And that maybe true. But there was something altogether wrong with this place.

We went down to the springs and sat in the steam room. It was nice, natural and built over a natural steam vent. Pretty cool, right? We then walked over to the mud bath area and covered ourselves with mud from the urn. We looked ridiculous but were hoping it would help with the bug bites (it did). Just as we were debating showering and hitting the hot tubs, the FIRST BUS LOAD of daytrippers showed up. Forty people walked down the aisle and plopped into the hot tubs. Not a space was left for us lowly paying customers. We showered and walked back to our room shaking our heads. Two other bused showed up that day, unloading a plethora of day tripping adventurers to scream and yell while they ziplined through the beautifully landscaped area.

Well, we walked down to the pool, which also was quite beautiful. Shortly after a group of people from one of the buses came down and started accosting everybody at the pool. They were local and most of the people at the pool were not. After twenty minutes of mind-boggling behavior, I realized that I was the only one left (except this little group) at the pool. The staff seemed not to care at all that this drunken, obnoxious group of people had chased away ten or so paying customers. We went back to our beautiful room and stayed in it.

We wandered down to the restaurant. Once again, luxurious and beautiful, it gave the impression of a great meal. I ordered the pork rope (er I mean chop) with a mango sauce. It was the worst meal I have had in CR, and quite possibly the worst meal I have ever ordered. The pork was inedible. I couldn't even cut it with a knife.

In the end, we checked out the following morning and this was the low point of our trip. Next time, I'll skip Borinquen and perhaps Rincon de la Vieja altogether, as this seems to be the norm for this area (cattle car tourism).

This hotel has a great location for a Spa, but the infrastructure requires lots of maintenance: examples: rooms with no Working AC nor hit water, extensive menu at La Carreta restaurant, but always missing ingredients for them, dessert menu that has many options but in 3 nights they offered always the same 3 options and only one that was in the menu.
People at the reception, Andrea and Fraser, and Mario a guide for the ATV Tour, made the difference for our experience there. Muchas Gracias!!!

We loved the place, very quite, beautiful view, amazing bungalow. Everyone was so nice and friendly, they really made as feel very special there. Once we got there they upgraded us to nicer bungalow without extra cost. We loved the attractions, which kept us busy every day. Nobody rush you, they want you to enjoy every attraction you paid for and if it require extra time, its still fine with them. The only think we weren't so happy about was the restaurant, the food was not so great and a little pricey. However, we drove to Liberia and every day visit different restaurant. FYI this place is not for everyone, if you want to lay down and wait for the waiter to keep bringing you drinks if is definitely not for you. However, if you like nature, adventure, peaceful days this is the place where you need to go.

When we first made the journey, we were a bit nervous of what we were getting into, as we drove our rental car on the bumpy and windy mountain road. The transformation of driving into a heavenly and luxurious resort was way beyond our expectations!

My wife and I spent the first day/night of our honeymoon here, and we were not only impressed, but were truly astonished at the natural beauty, cleanliness, and service of this resort.

The villa we stayed in had a luxurious canopy bed, vaulted ceilings, with a hammock hanging on our private terrace, overlooking the valley, with steam rising from the bubbling mud and hot pools.

The staff made every effort to treat us royally, with delicious choices on the menu.

The nature walk trails, through the jungle, the natural sauna, with steam rising from the side of the mountain, the mud baths, outdoor showers, hot pools. This resort is truly an oasis that is worth the time and effort it takes to traverse the bumpy road to get there.
Our only regret, is that we wished we would have been able to stay longer, to enjoy the beauty, service, and solitude of Borinquen Mountain Resort.

If our travels ever bring us back to Costa Rica, this will be very high on our list of places to stay.

My family of four stayed here, in a bungalow, for 3 nights. The room was rather Spartan, but adequate. The porch/hammock area was very nice. It had beautiful views of the surrounding countryside. The food was good, but perhaps a bit pricey. Smallish portions, for the price. We did a horseback tour, ATV tour, and the zipline tour, all on the hotel grounds. These were well done, and worth the cost. I would recommend our horse/ATV guide, Henry. He was very knowledgeable, friendly, and truly seemed to enjoy his work. His English is excellent too, which is good, because our command of Spanish is lacking. The sauna/mud/hot springs were an interesting experience. The pool was very nice. Most times we were the only ones in it. Overall it was a very nice experience, and decent value.

Room Tip: Bring whatever you need with you (alcohol/sundries) because the nearest town is about 30 minutes awa...

We had the place to ourselves over Labor Day Weekend. I'm sure they are busy at times, but we were the only ones at the pool and mineral baths over the weekend. Restaurant had only 3 other couples for dinner. If you want an action packed noise filled restaurant, bar, and fighting for chairs by the pool, this is not the place to go. You want to get away for some peace, quiet, in a natural environment...this is a great place.

Room Tip: Bring 4 wheel drive.
