“Tranquil and Beautiful resort”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 8, 2012

My husband and I spent two lovely days at the resort and while there we went horseback riding and visited one of the waterfalls located deep in the forest.
The road leading up to the resort was teeth rattling bumpy and not a road you would expect leading up the the gorgeous resort. As we traveled our thoughts were the hotel must not be doing very well if they couldn't better maintain the only road leading up to it.
We stayed in the Deluxe Suite, while nice the price wasn't worth the $300+ we paid for it.
If you go don't forget to take your bathing suit for swimming, long pants for exploring in the forest and mosquito repellent. The hot mud pools are fascinating and the surrounding trees are full of birds, squirrels and monkeys. But be alert because there are also Fer De Lance snakes so put a flashlight in your luggage for the walk back up to your room after dinner. We didn't see any, but we were advised to be aware in any case.
You won't receive better or friendlier service anywhere. The waiters actually helped us with our fledgling Spanish with patience and humor. All in all a delightful experience!

We were in Costa Rica over the Thanksgiving holiday and took a trip to Hotel Borinquen for an overnight visit. This was our second visit in two years. First of all, it's an absolutely beautiful resort. On our first visit we did the ziplining, horseback riding and a massage. [I have to say, the ziplinig venue is the most beautiful I've done. ...and the little waterfall trickling outside of our massage room window, amazing.] This time we did the steam room, mud bath & hot springs. It was fun, and afterwards we took an ATV ride followed up by a hike to view two waterfalls in the wooded area. The ATV ride was a blast, and our guide Oscar was fantastic. We learned that Borinquen was the name of Puerto Rico - before it was named Puerto Rico -- never knew that. The staff at the resort is fabulous, incredibly gracious (with the possible exception of the person who checked us out). I can't remember their names, but our waiter in the restaurant was a lot of fun and the waiter at the pool bar even did a "smoothie" rum punch for us right at closing after a little pursuasion. :) And on the acomodations, the pictures of the villas don't really do them justice. They are quite nice, very clean and cozy. The hammocks are a treat. If the food were better, I would have given them a 5 rating. Unfortunately, we were there in the middle of a crazy windstorm so we didn't sleep that well, but definitely not the fault of the resort. I would absolutely recommend this place for a short visit or day trip.

We arrived at Borinquen the afternoon of November 16th. It took about 1.5 hours from Liberia. Although a 4 wheel drive is not necessary, I'd say it's nice to have! The road in is a bit bumpy, lol. We stayed in a Junior Suite at the top of the hill (about $200/nite for our family of 4) and it was a fantastic room for a family. Beautiful one bedroom suite with soaring roof, HUGE bathroom, a great separate sitting area with a pull out couch, and a wonderful deck with a view all the way to the Pacific. It was probably 15 degrees cooler up at our room than when we arrived in Liberia.
The grounds are sprawling, green, and well kept. We saw dozens of howler monkeys walking to dinner the first night. The pool area is just gorgeous (although a bit on the cool side!) and the hot tubs are natural from the hot springs below. However, this led to them being too hot to use our 2nd nite.
The restaurant was nice (kind of on the formal side --- not in dress but in appearance) and the food was good and well presented. However, what you see on the menu is what you get.... no specials of any kind. No big deal for a couple of nites or three but I suspect it would get a bit boring for a longer stay. Again, just an observation, as the food was tasty. Breakfast in the morning is included, hearty, and very good. The coffee was excellent. This breakfast restaurant is behind the dinner restaurant and is open air with lovely views of the surrounding hillsides.
We did not do the zip lining here as we had planned for a day at Hacienda Guachipelin (1.25 hour drive). We did however, do a 2+ hour guided waterfall hike. Not too strenuous, and we saw 2 amazing waterfalls, an agouti (sp?), Morpho butterflies (giant blue ones), and other amazing sights of nature.
I can say, having stayed here and having visited HG that it appeared the rooms at HG were definitely more "rustic" and the restaurant at HG more casual. For our family, Borinquen was the perfect retreat and a great was to immerse ourselves in the eco way of Costa Rica. I would definitely recommend Borinquen to anyone that is considering it.
Lastly, we left Borinquen for Tamarindo late on Sunday and it took us a little over 2 hours to get there. I'd recommend getting an earlier start than we did as the last 45 minutes or so were in the dark, with people, bicycles, dogs, and children on or near the edge of the road. Not fun in the dark.
I hope this review helps and thanks to all on TA that helped me to plan my trip!

Room Tip: If you can, get a Junior Suite as they are more private and have amazing views.

We went horseback riding, zip line, hot springs, mud bath...the highlight was definitely the zip line, I felt we were on the set of King Kong! Beautiful scenery! The service was terrific. The horse back riding was fine, we didn't get a chance to go very fast, but the experience was fun.

Had a great three days before heading to the beach. We enjoyed the cuisine and the service. Make sure you ask for Noe he was great to laugh and converse with.
The views from our suite were phenomenal. We hiked and rode horseback to the waterfalls, which our guide Oscar was informative and knowledgeable about the wildlife and the forest.
Natural sauna and mud baths are always available. We went during late green season so we enjoyed the solitude.
We will return in the spring.

Room Tip: The Junior Suite is the way to go, with great views and plenty of space.

We stayed at the HBMR back in March of 2012 with my family of 4 and another family of 5 ... all kids between 6 and 10 and loved it. After being in the surf in Playa Grande for a week we took our group up the the resort for a few nights before heading home and were glad we did.
The resort was extremely clean and the staff was very attentive. The hot springs, steam room and mud bath was a nice treat after being being beaten up by the waves for a week but there was also the other adventures they offered that made the vacation great. Ziplining and horseback riding tours took us through areas of the vast property of this huge estate.
Accommodations were well kept and very roomy. The only issue was hot water pressure but that would be the only issue I had during our stay. We stayed at the two villas at the top of the hill. A big walk but we were on vacation so who cares. It gave us privacy and great vantage points of the area. We had an ill little girl one night and the staff and particularily the GM took extra care to make sure she was comfortable. This set our family at ease and was much appreciated!

Room Tip: Get a Villa. We spent hours watching the hawks riding the thermals while we sipped on rum and cokes!

Sept was def the best month to go! We only stayed one night at this hotel and it was amazing! We did the Suana, Mud Bath and Hot Springs, and were the only people there! This might have been due to the recent earthquake or the fact that Rincon was active.
Our room was beautiful! Def spend the money and get the Junior Suite! It was HUGE, Private, and had an amazing view, especially from the hot tub! Very romantic!
We had dinner at the restaurant that night which we both felt was excellent! Not sure why people are complaning, we had no issues and excellent service! Visit Noah the bartender, he was a great laugh and made awesome Cosmos! Looking forward to staying at this hotel again next year!

Room Tip: Definately pay the extra money for the Junior Suite! Well worth it!!
