“Isolated complex with excellent hot springs, but could be more.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 19, 2013 via mobile

To get to this complex - it is not really a resort there is a very long un-made up road and a 4 wheel drive is best. We were aware of road and in fact does highlight the stark differences in the climate as the scenery changes quite a bit on the drive in. There is only one restaurant the menu is a little limited but the staff for us were friendly and attentive both here in the restaurant and main reception( there have been comments elsewhere regarding this) the rooms Inspite of being fairly new are very dark and meant the use of lights quite a bit. Whilst rooms are well equipped and clean the bedding is not Egyptian Cotton as it states in the room information and is poorly fitting. The hot springs though are excellent and the mud treatment great fun. Shame building work was going on to extend the dining facilities - but it has to happen at some point and you may well hear power washers being use to clean the hot spring pools first thing in the morning. Be aware that the place is open to day trippers and will make it very difficult to get lunch - maybe worth asking the staff what time they may arrive, as we couldn't get lunch when we wanted on a particular day. We didin't do an organised tour from here, but blue river did seem to offer something for everyone it appeared . This is not a complex as suggests something bigger with more food and on site activities ( there is a Spa on sit that looked fine, but can't make an opinion on this. Nice place overall , but could be sonmuch more.

Maybe because we were at the end of the high season ? March 12th 2013? The food was very bad. For lunch, I had a casado the pescado which is a tradional meal in Costa Rica. I did not ask for something very fency ! For dinner, I took a spagetti Alfredo which is popular in many restaurants in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. Nothing in the plate except few mushrooms and pasta and so dry... Adding to that, my husband and I slept in a bed where the sheets were so used, very transparent and removing all the time so we slept on the matelass... !!! Finaly, when we left, the receptionist girl was so unpolite with one person in our group. We are 18 friends travelling at that time. We all stay in Guancaste during winther and do some excursion around. I do not think we will go back there.

Room Tip: The little chalet are very nice... It is only the sheets that does not fit with the rooms. They mig...

I picked this hotel based on Volcano tours it offers to Rincon de la Vieja volcano- the volcano has been closed for almost a year due to over activity. . It is very dissappointing to travel to such a remote location for a specific tour which is currently offered on their website but not available. With that being said, owner very friendly and eager to please guests. Hotel grounds very pretty. Restaurant with bar- I was pleased with all meals although at times felt invisible to staff in restaurant. Also currently doing construction next door to restaurant which takes away from serene setting and mood.
Hot springs are green due to minerals and very relaxing. Fun cold water pool with slide! Grounds and trails very pretty- natural mud bath fun!! Advertise amphibian / frog exhibit but not finished?
We went on canopy tour and heart of palm tour- both great- loved walking through national park on heart of palm tour. Rio Celeste really pretty- accessible to view short walk down road. All 3 days were rainy and cloudy while there so could not do all tours- tubing was a highlight for some guests that stayed days before us when weather better but water too cold during our stay.
This is a very remote location with road leading in taking almost an hour to get down - only 21 kilometer road- I am not kidding! Beautiful grounds and springs - tours and beautiful rainforest and blue river are why you come here.

Thank you to this reviewer for taking the time to provide your opinion. Sometimes criticism is very difficult to take but all negative comments from all reviews are being listened to, investigated and everything possible is being done to fix what is legitimate.

Regarding the Rincon de la Vieja hiking tour, our website clearly states, “DUE TO RECENT VOLCANIC ACTIVITY THE PARK HAS CLOSED THIS TOURS UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. We offer an alternative tour not posted to the sources of fresh water, large gorgeous water falls and through a palm of heart plantation. Please inquire at hotel.” Actually, having been on all tours, I think the alternative tour we’ve set up is more interesting and just as challenging.
As to the road, it takes up to 90 minutes, which is excellent time from Liberia’s airport, when you consider the alternatives. We strongly recommend a car with good clearance or utilizing our shuttle service. For anyone with their own car travel to many parts of Costa Rica has to factor in as part of the “adventure”. During your ride to Blue River Resort, you’ll experience the transformation from rolling dry savannah to tropical rainforest with spectacular mountain ranges on either side and you’ll observe the local’s way of life – all a extra special part of the adventure. Unfortunately, after a hard rain, the road needs to fixed again but it’s always easily passable.

No complains at all.
It's a bit off the hotspots, but this makes the location so lovely. Perfect rooms, very friendly and good service. The food is also very good (remember where u are).
Access with a standard car can be diffucult.
CU again!

We spent 3 days here at the end of a 17 day trip to Costa Rica. I loved it. The road in was part of the fun, passing lots of tiny villages and homes in hilly terrain. It seems everyone here owns a horse as their main mode of transportation. Our room was large and each room is its own little cabin, surrounded by flowers and vegetation and with a porch and hammock. Very cute. There is one restaurant on the premise but luckily it's really good, not badly priced and with with very friendly staff. The pools are lovely. The heat of the water varies as they get emptied and cleaned but there's always one that's piping hot and some have man made waterfalls to sit under. There are also little trails that take you to humming birds, butterflies and other points of interest, including a creek with hot water (you can't go into it). Here you can use mud to cover yourself and sit inside a hut to dry, before washing off under an outdoor shower. We spent one day off-site exploring a hike that takes you through volcanic terrain. You can also take trips arranged by the resort, and get a massage. All in all it was a very lovely place to soak, relax and enjoy the pretty nature all around you. Quite low key, which is what we liked about it.

My third time here. The grounds and surroundings are absolutely stunning, and I would recommend to all to come and visit.
However, there are a couple of things the management should have figured out by now, and that is why my rating is not 5 stars:
1. Explain to your employees what 90%+ of your customers expect – a warm, friendly and flexible staff. Most places in Costa Rica do this with amazing spontaneity. It is hit or miss here.
2. The surroundings are beautiful and we have over the years discovered a number of beautiful half or full day hikes in the area (by talking to the people who live in the area). The hotel staff is unwilling or unable to give you advice on where to go, unless you purchase an expensive tour. It would be easy to print some flyers with directions for self-guided hikes. I am sure many guests would quickly discover these hikes are well worth spending an extra night or two, or a trip back.

Thank you to this reviewer, who has been to visit us 3 times! We greatly appreciate your patronage. However for some reason, it appears our staff was not able to provide a satisfactory explanation as to you why self-guided tours are not provided, other than going to the Rio Azul, the beautiful blue river across from the resort. The spectacular natural spots we’ve discovered, usually requires entering through private property, which involves permission and making safe paths and/ or roads. Besides trespassing, we won’t condone the very real risk that one of our customers will get hurt or lost. Let me take this a little off topic by providing an example that very much distresses me. For a time, customers would be flagged on the road by someone offering lower price tours to places like Rincon de la Vieja crater. Not only is the park closed for safety reasons right now, this tour guide had no back-up, was not insured and didn’t even have first aid kit. It only takes one misstep, like this, to spoil a vacation and possibly change your life.

We love the premises of this place! That is why this is our third year of coming back. Lovely greenery, botanical garden, three beautiful warm pools and one cool pool with slide. Nature, birds. It rains a lot here so rain jacket comes handy. Our kids love this place. The downside is the access road (but we got used to it by now) and a restaurant – the breakfast staff was enormously unfriendly both days that we were there and the prices for lunch/ dinner are high. Ziplines were fine, but there were plenty better ones elsewhere in Costa Rica. On the other hand hiking in the forest was amazing. Do not expect internet to work great – it is sporadic in the restaurant, not at all in the rooms. Management please educate your restaurant staff how to be friendly or even better hire people that naturally are!! It would help to have temperature sensor in the warm pools so the temperature is better regulated - we experienced both too warm and too cold water.
