A family owned/operated business (maybe a few gringos, but mostly family), my Husband and I come here several times every year on our way to Tahoe (about 10-15). My husband lived with some people from El Salvador off an on for two years, and he is a huge fan of the local foods, specifically Papusas.
What is a Papusa? Mana from heaven... a homemade tortilla with meat, beans, and cheese cooked into it. Then you top it with Curtido (pickled cabbage, carrots, jalapenos) and the red salsa and you have the real deal. The owner who is from El Salvador is there most of the time, and he has come out on occasion to confirm deliciousness. The service here is great. While we are semi regulars, I have never seen a drop off in customer service with other people who enter the restaurant while we are eating. The staff is top notch.
Favorite Foods - #1: SOPA DE RES - beef stew with carrots, cabbage, yuka/potato, corn, zucchini, savory broth. #2: PLATANOS CON FRIJOLES - fried plantains with a side of beans and creama. Sure its sounds gross to eat beans with bananas, but don't knock it until you try it. #3: PAPUSAS - As described above, food from heaven.
The chips and salsa are also very good. A little kick, but not so spicy/hot that our one year old didn't almost finished off a bowl by herself.
NOTE: We last visited in Sept 2013, but have been regulars since before the cameron park location... oh how I miss the highway 49 Fernandos. Cameron Park Fernandos is just as awesome.
