The gardens are beautiful, the staff was friendly, the wifi worked without problem, parking was easy, and the breakfast was filling and fair for buffet-style service. But after that, the Lodge starts showing its age. As you register, you agree to a 'noise' policy that essentially states you will be warned once to keep the noise down, past that you must leave, forfeit your room charge and pay the room charges of the people you annoyed. Wow. Since we weren't planning any wild parties for the room–and, in fact, like the idea that noisy guests (wedding parties?) could be expelled–this didn't affect us, but it must speak to something that happened in the past and the somewhat thin walls in the building.
We were in the Moonstone building, across a street from the check-in. The room was on the first floor and pretty dark. The footfalls of the people above us were easy to hear, but I guess the noise consequences kept everyone fairly quiet.
The bathroom had no window or other ventilation and the slow-warming florescent lights give a dim view for a while. Cambria has a severe water problem so everything is low-flow.
The maid service was excellent and the room was very clean.
The Lounge had a great blues band Saturday evening and we had a wonderful time relaxing there after taking the night tour at Hearst Castle. The Lodge participates in the October Scarecrow Festival with plenty of decorations, and strolls through the gardens are very relaxing.
We had one dinner in the restaurant during our stay and found it pretty undistinguished; go downtown to find better.
Would we stay here again? Maybe. But you also might want to look for a place along Moonstone Drive. After all, when you're in Cambria, you're not going to spend the entire day in the room, there's too much to see and do.
