“Gorgeous Hotel full of spirit and great touches”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 8, 2010

We stayed here on our way down Highway 1 on our honeymoon, we booked Hotel El Colibri the night before in Santa Cruz so we arrived at about 7.30pm tired and weary from a long day of driving and jaw dropping scenery at every turn on the road down.We were instantly greeted warmly by the lovely charismatic Matt who immediately upgraded us to a jacuzzi room and gave us local restaurant recommendations(there is no restaurant at the hotel).Matt's colleague Pragna joined us while registering and once she heard we were newlyweds she became more excited than we were. There should be a Pragna at every hotel, we told her she should start her own website to help people navigate Highway 1.Within minutes she had insisted that we move to an even better jacuzzi room with the jacuzzi in the room! She booked us tickets for Hearst Castle-which we had thought would be sold out the night before-and both Matt and Pragna invited us to the wine tasting and booked a table for us at the best restaurant of our whole trip -Robin's. Pragna even went so far as to ring the restaurant and ask for a good table for us. We got a gorgeous table in a little alcove at Robin's where we could see all the activity but we had a lovely private corner. The food at Robin's was out of this world perfect. The menu ranges from gorgeous seafood to delectable Indian dishes. Every morsel was heavenly, and the restaurant, the town and the food has a magical quality like it is part of some romantic comedy movie.Definitely a must-visit if you go through Cambria. When we got back to the hotel the fire was lit and the lovely Matt served us up two delicious red wines from the Santa Ynez valley we brought our wine to the room to enjoy our jacuzzi. The room was perfection, lots of space, fab big bed with a very comfortable mattress and immaculate linens.Best bathrobes ever found in a hotel room and lovely pharmacopia products. We filled the jacuzzi and got the fire going in the room and sipped our wine to a near comatose state of bliss! The bathrooms are beautiful and the showers are really roomy.Everything at this hotel feels like you have discovered a hidden oasis in a magical town. When leaving the following morning we very much regretted not having the time to stay longer in Cambria. Pragna helped organise us for our next stop in Santa Barbara with lots of recommendations and printed off maps and lots of information for us. Truly memorable stay.Cant wait for the opportunity to go back.If you plan Cambria as one of your stops, dont miss the elephants seals just north of the town and keep an eye out to your left and you might be lucky enough to see the zebras of Hearst castle rambling in the fields. Hearst Castle is a great trip, fascinating stories given by passionate tour guides.

We've been coming to Cambria for 15 years to camp with friends at San Simeon State Beach, and this year, decided to treat ourselves to two nights NOT sleeping in a tent. (We gave our tent to unexpected visitors and tried out the very new and very nice El Colibri)

The room was wonderful. The shower, spacious and clean and fun. The jacuzzi tub in our room was great. King bed super comfortable. We loved opening the slider to listen to the night noises in the ravine outside the window. Continental breakfast was good--nothing special, but they also had a bar area that we may just try out next time we come to stay.

There's a hot tub for guests that we didn't try, but that's something we will check out next time too. And there will be a next time..............because this hotel was clean, comfortable, and a pretty good value for the Central Coast!

Stayed here for a night in their 1-bedroom suite. Expected a modern hotel and room, but when entered the room thought that it was from the 1970s. My wife did not believe me when I told her that this a new hotel. The decor, carpets and especially the bathroom were very dated. There was a cheap looking plastic bath/shower combination - not a spa bath as I had been led to believe. Only a few of the TV channels worked and clearly the subscription fees had not been paid for most of the channels.

The one-bedroom suite is clearly meant for families as in the living room the sofas can be opened to provide additional sleeping space. However, I would not recommend this for a couple. The breakfast was also nothing special and probably one of the poorest of our entire trip down along the Pacific Coast Highway.

Cambria itself is also a very small town, but besides Hearst Castle there is not much to see in the area, and if you are from Europe and have seen the castles there, I am not sure Hearst Castle is a worthwhile stop. It was also difficult to find anywhere to eat after 8pm, but luckily the Old Stone Station was open and we would recommend this as a good place to eat.

Also, we read recently that El Colibri has filed for bankruptcy protection so I would also keep this in mind when considering whether to stay here. I would not recommend this property to others, and knowing that Cambria has a very limited number of hotel properties it may make sense to stay elsewhere if visiting this part of the California coast.

Thanks for the feed-back. I'm sorry you felt the way you did about your room. If only you had alerted our front desk staff to your disappointment they would have found a room more to your taste, or assisted you in booking a location more suitable to your preferences. We're disappointed you weren't pleased.

Room and service was great. Enjoyed the complimentary breakfast. Great location for visits to the beach, wineries, Cambria central area, restaurants. Loved my stay!

My husband and I wanted a romantic weekend on the central coast. Hotel El Colibri was a perfect fit. It was easy to locate, with plenty of parking, and a very helpful staff. We enjoyed the in-lobby local wine happy hour and the staff had great recommendations for dinner. Clean, well decorated rooms and a hot tub on the second floor added to the experience. My only suggestion is that balconies would be nice for every room, and that mini fridges in each room would be a nice addition. We loved falling asleep listening to crickets and frogs with the beach only walking distance away. We will return to this great little place in the future!

We chose this hotel as we were driving down Highway 1 and wanted to make a stop at Hearst Castle. This hotel seemed to be the most inviting in the area of Cambria and the price was not too bad. It's a small and cozy hotel right off Highway 1, situated at the start of Moonstone Drive (we did not go to the beach though as we didn't even know it was nearby!). No seaview, and the location is a bit odd. It was close to the town of Cambria but it was not much to see or do, so choosing a hotel based on closeness to Cambria was kind of irrelevant.
The room was huge and I liked the look of it, with a gas fireplace and a huge, soft bed. It felt nice and clean, and there was a huge bathroom with separate shower and bath tub. We did not use the spa facilities, so I cannot comment on that, but to me it didn't seem too inviting cause the atmosphere was a little cold. The breakfast was okay, some bagels, muffins, muffins, cereal, a little bit of fruit. The bagel was so dry I could not eat it.. All in all, a good hotel, but with some flaws. At the price we paid I'm not sure I would stay here again even though I loved the room. It would be nice to stay closer to the ocean and a little bit further away from the main road.

We stayed at the El Colibri Hotel for 2 nights and there were many good things about it. The hotel is very clean and the rooms are very nice and large. I liked the furniture in the rooms and the bed was super comfy. There is a nice little wine bar in the lobby and a continental breakfast in the morning with the basics, toast, bagels, fruit, cereal, yogurt, etc. It is right off Hwy 1 but you wouldn't know it when you are in the hotel. There is underground parking which is great if you have a regular sized car, a little difficult to park with a full sized truck. One of the receptionists was able to recommend some nice wineries and some great olive oil tasting
There were a few disappointments though. I had emailed a question about the "spa" a few days before arriving and never received a response. I had also called the day before and talked to Matthew to request 2 champagne flutes to be in our room when we arrived. He said it would not be a problem, but they never showed up. We went in the hot tub in the wellness center, but got out soon because there was a bad smell. We tried out the steam room, but it was way too steamy. I didn't even know that could happen, but we turned it on, went in, and within seconds our feet were burning from steam that was coming out. Within about a minute you couldn't see your hand in front of your face. We kept waiting for it to turn off, but it didn't, so we had to get out.
All in all, it is a very nice hotel, but next time, I would stay further down Moonstone Beach Drive and get a room right across from the bluffs and the ocean.
