“Don't bother”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2012

We drove by this house and said- big deal! True, it was made of all kinds of things, but it is on a narrow road- you really can't see anything and no one to let you in.

“Worth a stop if in the area!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 10, 2012

We were disappointed no one ever returned our call regarding a tour. Perhaps email would be a better way to go? We ended up taking a drive to see the outside and found it unique and very interesting. The more you stared at it, the more clever things you noticed about its construction. After seeing the house, my husband decided he was glad we didn't get a tour. He questioned whether it would be safe to tour it.

“only saw the outside”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 8, 2012

Only saw it from outside. There are scheduled visiting hours by tour only. If you really want to see it, inquire as to this before driving out there. Pretty strange on the outside. Worth a driveby if only to satisfy your curiosity.

“A Folk Art Dream Come True”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2012

Artsy, creative and uniquely romantic experience. Broke in Cambria? Wanna see the Poor Man's Hearst Castle, this is the spot.

“slice of old americana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 31, 2012

i suppose it is a question of taste but i loved seeing this old folly of a house. built over many years by art beal, the town's garbage man, from abalone shells and reclaimed garbage materials, it was art's answer to san simeon. he used discarded pieces of hearst castle in the construction. they called him nitt witt beal, but he sounds pretty visionary to me. he was a poet and a philosopher and all round oddball guy. you can actually go inside, the owners conduct tours of the place and show a little video about art as he was once featured on a tv show. we got a comprehensive tour of the inside and the gardens for $10pp. you can google the place and there are several sites listing the phone number to call for info, no-one lives in the actual house. i find this kind of thing more interesting than the hearst castle and cambria is an appealing town, but probably not everyone's cup of tea.
