“Another great four day vacation on the coast”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2011

We had my granddaughter with us and had a wonderful stay at the hotel. The room was clean, quiet and restful. The microwave came in handy. The beds were comfortable. The staff were very attentive. The breakfast was fine with good coffee and pleasant people to chat with.
The swimming pool is heated and very relaxing as is the hot tub. A good place to sit out of the wind and relax reading or sunning.
We will stay here again on our next trip to Cambria.

Huge rooms, clean as a whistle, warm wonderful hospitality and the most beautiful setting. What could anyone moan about.
We were greeted by a lovely team of experienced staff who gave out warm cookies, delicious red apples and great info.We were on a long tour of the US and the service here was truly exceptional. We stayed in 12 hotels on this 5 week trip and most were very good but this was so much more. Not due to fancy details but the place has been very well thought out.The comfy seats by the fire were such a great touch. My husband wanted a specific dish and lo and behold I mentioned it and 3 staff looked at menu ,on the web and phoned around until they found it .How helpful and very kind. The beach is wild and wonderful .Yes I know I am going on but it was so lovely I am reliving it.

My husband and I spent two days on the coast celebrating our "lucky 13th" anniversary. We really enjoyed our 2nd stay at FogCatcher Inn recently. We could have checked out any of the places along the ocean but the place was so good our first trip, last year, we decided to just keep it an annual thing. The staff is part of the reason we made the choice. When we asked for recommendations for a meal they have not disappointed us. No kidding...every time...!!! The location is wonderful, rooms very tasteful and the staff is why we will be return guests.

There are many reasons to be wary of this Inn's website and physical appearance:

1. The photos only show the 8 front units which face the ocean. They are lovely, but they are the ONLY units facing the ocean. Period. End of story. You need to know this.
2. This place is HUGE. If you are expecting 10-12 cozy rooms at a B&B, get ready for check-in shock: most of the units face into the parking lot and have no view of the ocean across the street: your view will be of the cars out in front of your unit about 6 feet away. It seems like there were 25-35 of these kind of rooms, but perhaps there are more as they comprise several hidden wings you can't see in the Fogcatcher photos.
3. Now for the kicker: Whether you ask for an upgrade or not, you will be offered one of the front rooms with windows for $55 extra. They will show it to you with the afternoon sun streaming in and the sound of the surf nearby. It is truly a lovely room and very inviting. If you are a little bit skeptical about the upselling, ask to see the room they were prepared to give you for $209. Oops. We were shown Room 808 which was narrow, dark and had a horrible chemical smell (sulfates/smoke/deodorizing chemicals.) It was 3:30 p.m. outside and it looked like midnight in Room 808. We immediately commented to each other on the smell and the front desk staff seemed surprised. On the other hand, we would not be surprised if we were later told there was a body decomposing under one of the beds and CSI had put up warning tape. Naturally, we agreed to the sunny room for $264 and were not sorry. In doing so, we were extremely quizzical about why they would even think the first room was acceptable for lodging anyone but the Undead or soon to be deceased. The front desk staff feigned shock about the smell and immediately blamed it on another guest smoking in Room 808.
However, they did nothing to check the smell out personally in our presence. After we were in our new room and admiring the view, I went back to the front desk to ask about the possibility of a late check-out (Answer: NO.) When I came down the same front desk manager has just shown another arriving guest Room 808 so he could figure out if he wanted to upgrade to one of the front units. Wow, what a scam: you show everybody the dark room with the coffin-interior walls so they can ask: "What's that funny smell?" and contemplate smelling it all night and then weigh the dank small with the opportunity to bask in the light of the setting sun over the Pacific and smell the fresh ocean breeze. This is really a very clever scam, but you will definitely get what you pay (and then pay) for. The front rooms are lovely and well-appointed. However, they are extremely overpriced just to get some light, a breeze and a view of the ocean. Word should get out about what's going on here, but don't say you weren't warned.
4. The swimming pool is very tiny and all concrete; the hot tub seats 4-6 skinny adults and only had tepid water. Both close at 10:00 p.m. with locked gates for a chain-link fence. Very uninviting but at least it's warmer than the ocean.

The only plus to this place is the breakfast room: it is painted yellow, decorated quaintly like a farmhouse kitchen and has an excellent selection of local pastries, eggs, sausages, cereal and...LOBBY WAFFLES!!! What can we say about the Power and Glory of Lobby Waffles to perk up any morning after? And these lobby waffles are separated into 4 individual cups, meaning you can make any kind of topping you want for all 4 or have each one your way. Without the lobby waffles, I would definitely look for another B&B in the Cambria area. And there are plenty more. Some with the exact same configuration and exteriors leading to a very strong belief some of these quaint little places are part of a larger chain of mid-scale motels masquerading as "Inns."

Room Tip: There is a stiff price to pay for a room facing the ocean you should consider before booking.

We are so sorry to hear we did not meet this guest’s expectations. I can assure you we are not scamming anybody and only offering the best service that we can, as shown in the many positive TripAdvisor comments. We have many types of rooms from Full Ocean View, Mini Suites, and Traditional Garden View rooms. We offer all of these rooms through our website but only limited room types through 3rd party sites such as Expedia and Travelocity, which it appears this guest booked through. The description of the room and the views are clearly noted on all sites. Our priority here is to make every guests experience the best it can be and the offer to upgrade the guest was done with the best intentions and not meant to deceive anyone. Our Traditional Garden View Rooms are surrounded by trees, roses and flower gardens, and with the foggy coastal weather here (our name is the FogCatcher) the rooms can be a bit dark when you walk into them for the first time. Our manager on this day did notice a smell in the first room (which would not have been this guest’s room) and immediately put it out of service and had housekeeping detail it as well as maintenance clean the carpets. We take these matters very seriously and handle these issues quickly and discretely so as to not interrupt any guests’ stays with us. My apologies if this guest felt the matter was disregarded but that is furthest from the truth. We hope this guest books directly with us next time so we can give them the experience they expected before they arrive.

The fogcatcher is an excellent hotel. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and they also have rooms that allow pets. The complimentary breakfast is delicious and abundent. There is a pool and jacuzzi. The staff goes out of their way to make your stay a one to remember.

Took a trip with my sisters. We stayed in the 2 queen beds room. Everything was exactly as shown on the website. The room was clean and comfy and had a fireplace. My husband and I will definitely go back and stay there again.

My sister and I were warmly welcomed and well tended to at the Fog Catcher. So was our chihuahua , Diego. The rooms are attractive, breakfast delicious, and the ocean is so close by. We enjoyed the hot tub and pool every day. This is a lovely place to stay!
