“This place is a trip!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012

This place is a trip!!

Rooms:
We recently stayed two nights here on the Stress Stopper Package which included the room and the full mud bath experience with a 30 minute massage.
We were in room 26 which is downstairs and very close to the pools.
The room was totally mid century funky with great funk-licious wallpaper and carpet.
The room was large with a nice sized bathroom and updated shower.
Nothing fancy.. but it was cool if you like anything mid century modern.
If you are looking for 'fancy' or foo-foo.. then you wont like this place!
The room was spotlessly clean and had an a/c unit to keep the room cool.
The beds were great and had more pillows than any place I've ever been. I think there were 12 usable pillows on the beds (not the gross decorative kind that never get cleaned and you throw on the ground as soon as you walk in the room!!)
Only complaints are the TV is freakin tiny. ... Its in a huge cabinet, but the TV is about 12 inches!!!
and the noise from the room above is LOUD!! Super loud. The footsteps sound like they are doing jumping jacks.
I would definitely recommend getting a room on the top floor!
WIFI in our room worked perfectly, but they do have a disclaimer that some areas on the property have poor reception.
There are also 3 bungalows that are in the back behind the pool. Those don't appear to have the same mid century vibe to them.

Grounds/Pools:
Spotlessly clean! The place was pretty empty the 2 days we were there so we had most of the mineral pools to ourselves.
2 outdoor pools heated to 80* and 90* and one inside pool that was much hotter (102*)... more like a large spa.
This place is not fancy.. but it is clean and nice.
Great location too... right on the main street in Calistoga so you can walk to any restaurant you want. Also there is a grocery store right next door which is very convenient.

Spa/ Mud Bath:
AWKWARD! Don't be shy or you will not like it.
There isn't any privacy so you better be comfortable letting it all hang out.
The Mud Bath itself last 15 minutes. To me it was a little claustrophobic and a little hard to really relax. The mud was hot and thick and it is funny to get in and try to wiggle your naked body down into the mud while the bath attendant shovels more on top of you! Interesting experience!
The rest was more enjoyable... I didn't mind the soak in the tub with the mineral water and jacuzzi-like bubbles. The sauna is tiny and would be really awkward to be in there with a stranger!
The massage was good. Not the best but not horrible.
All in all the mud bath was an interesting experience. Not sure I would do it again but is fun to experience if you don't mind being naked around people and cleaning mud out of your cracks and crevices in an open shower with no door.
Did I say "awkward"??!!

The motel staff and spa staff here were very nice and friendly!
We had a fun time here!

Room Tip: Get a room on the second level. The ground level rooms are very loud if there are people in the room...

Thanks much for your thorough review. I really appreciate it when our guests take the time to leave their impressions for others....thanks again!

We do our best to maintain the classic mid-century modern scope of the property without overdoing it! And yes, the rooms have lots of clean and fluffy pillows...all the better to relax with.

We are in the process of changing out our televisions so hopefully on your next visit we will have a newer and larger one for you. Currently our "Corner Queen" and Victorians have newer HD Flat Screen TV's in them.

As to the mud bath, I agree that it is an "experience" that is both relaxing and unique. For those who are more modest, a swim suit can be worn while doing the treatment and we do our very best to respect our guests modesty, given the nature of mud baths!

Thanks again for the review! We hope to see you again soon.

This was a last minute booking. We were traveling with a baby grandson and a disabled person. Dr Wilkinson's found us three very good rooms each with accessible shower rooms around a courtyard. We enjoyed relaxing together in the courtyard. The two outdoor pools looked so inviting and what a relief, they had a helpful bag of assorted swimwear to borrow. An indoor mineral pool was wonderful. We had never been to Nappa Valley nor heard of Calistoga. What a find. A lovely small town, with a big choice of restaurants both relaxed (basic but very nice Mexican nearly next door) and smart. Reception staff were professional and helpful. Book treatments in advance - our last minute request was declined but an alternative location suggested. A great place for a weekend break for families or couples.

Room Tip: Our downstairs rooms were convenient for the pools. There was no noise from the one floor above us

This place is adorable! It's like an old motor lodge/motel, and it reminds me of car trips with my parents when I was a kid. It's clean and charming, and hasn't been invaded by the hipsters yet. They have a HUGE mineral pool that is like an enormous hot tub that is quite entertaining, and two other pools as well. Plus free parking! Be aware that it's not super posh -- it's basically a motel, not a 4 star resort -- so if you expect people bringing you towels at the pool, that's not really what you are in for. Sure, the towels could be fluffier and the TVs could be bigger, but you're not staying in Calistoga to hang out in your room. Very clean, very comfortable and GREAT location, right by a market. Great for families. Can't wait to come back and try the mud baths! Also, the woman checking us in and out, Mariah, was SO friendly and nice. Thumbs up!

I really liked our stay at Dr. Wilkinson's -- very centrally located and right next door to a grocery store, which proved useful for stocking up on picnic provisions before we went for a bike ride around some of Calistoga's wineries.

However, I'm not sure whether it was b/c there was a classic car show going on in town that day or what but we paid almost $200/night, definitely more Napa prices than Calistoga prices. We went on the recommendation of a friend that we try out the "Works" in the attached spa house.

Despite the room being comfortable and clean, and the staff very hospitable, the bungalow we booked backs up to a residential neighborhood that woke us up every morning w/ lawn mowers, dogs barking and outdoor family activities. I know it sounds grumpy, but if I pay $200/night, I want to be able to sleep in as late as I want to and enjoy some peace and quiet.

The spa was great, but bring a swimsuit if you're uncomfortable w/ having mud up your butt or w/ people looking at you whilst naked.

I'm not sure if I would recommend this place to a friend, but only b/c it was too expensive and there were other more affordable options elsewhere.

Room Tip: Bungalows 36 and 37 back up to the residential neighborhood and don't get any Lincoln Ave noise...

We visited Dr. Wilkinson’s as part of a surprise celebration long weekend for my 50th birthday. We spent Friday night here and then Saturday morning I enjoyed “the WORKS” spa treatment before moving on to the rest of the weekend celebrations. The room was comfortable and clean. The staff was friendly and helpful. My husband worked with James when he made these surprise reservations. James was very helpful. We arrived around 3pm on Friday afternoon and James had left on vacation so Diane checked us in. She was very helpful and pleasant. She upgraded our room and booked my spa treatment. The mineral pools were great! I suggest being the first appointment in the morning when doing spa treatments as it gets busy and loud as the day goes on and they are busy. Everyone was pleasant. This place is like a blast out of the past with a modern upgrade in the rooms.

We stayed in a cottage. The motel is older, but it was clean and so quaint! We loved it. The water was nice and warm, pools were clean.

Room Tip: the cottages have kitchen, bedroom, and bath

I have been taking an annual "renewal" trip to the mineral springs and mud baths of Calistoga for nearly 10 years. After trying a few of the spas in town, I continually return to Doc's. Not just because of their always reasonable rates and specials, but mainly because of Annemarie. She is the esthetician at Doc Wilkinson's. Her facials are truly amazing. She takes the time to analyze what would be best for you, every time. My spa time is incomplete without having an Annemarie facial. It always worth it!!!!

Room Tip: Bottom floors next to the pool are quiet and have easy access to the heated pool.

Dear Emily B,

Thank you so much for the complimentary review. I will be certain to pass your kind words along to Annamarie. I agree with you, she gives an amazing facial and has many fans like you!Of course, our comfortable rooms, pools and other services are also available to those who might want a service, other than a facial.

We hope to see you soon and thank you again for the good word!

Best wishes,
Mark Wilkinson
