“The Best in the Valley”

Foothill House Bed and Breakfast

Feb 14, 2008

Just returned to cold New England after a delightful short week in California - topped off with three nights at the Foothill House. This was our first stay after several aborted attempts (our problems not the Foothill House) and it was absolutely delightful. The property is compact but every room (and yes we got to tour all of them) is spacious with plenty of sitting room, ouside patios and/or decks, and kitchen facilitites. We stayed in the Quail's Roost, a cottage up the hill from the main house. Spacious, clean, warm, a jacuzzi tub with it's own waterfall, a gas fireplace that opens to both the sitting area and the bathroom. If you are nice to Darla, she'll even let you drive the golf cart up the hill to the Roost. Speaking of Darla, she is an absolute deight, friendly, attentive to your every need, an incredible cook (the scrambled eggs and french toast breakfasts were to die for), and your own private tour guide. We had to leave early on the last day and without asking a breakfast "tote" appeared with fresh muffins, fruit, and juice for our early departure. Can't say enough about this place - stay there, you will not be disappointed.

“Loved the Lupine Suite!”

Foothill House Bed and Breakfast

Feb 14, 2008

My husband and I and another couple have visited Calistoga for the last eight years. We love the ambiance (restaurants, treatments, and relaxation).

This year we stayed at the Foothill House and will stay again next year. The grounds are zen-like and well maintained. Darla is a gracious host and fantastic cook. She offered meal choices
and breakfast in our rooms. When we requested directions, she looked up information on Mapquest. You'll enjoy her wine and cheese hour.

Finally, the rooms are spacious, clean and decorated in a variety of comfortable styles. If you are looking for a relaxing 3-day get-a-way, go to Darla's place-The Foothill House!

I gave my boyfriend a trip to California for xmas and decided to book us a room for 2 nights at the Foothill House while we were in wine country. I cannot say enough great things about Darla the owner and the property itself. As soon as I put in the reservation request, she called us less than an hour later (ON Christmas, no less) to inquire about our food preferences, etc. Although we didn't get to spend much time talking with her (we missed the wine/appetizer hour both nights we stayed there), she was very nice and brought us the most delicious breakfasts we had ever eaten. We had booked a wine tour with Platypus Tours (another highly recommended business) and she brought some of her cookies on board before we left. As our bodies were still on east coast time, we were up early both mornings and the 2nd morning she even brought us a carafe of hot water and extra tea bags an hour before breakfast arrived. We also got some more of her delicious cookies for the road when we left. We will definitely stay here again the next time we are in wine country.

“Wonderful Hospitality”

Foothill House Bed and Breakfast

My wife and I stayed at the Foothill House Bed and Breakfast in August of 07, and all I can say is that Darla is the best bed and breakfast inn-keeper around!

From the moment we arrived we knew we were in good hands. We were shown to our room (we stayed in the Redwood room, which included a Jacuzzi Tub along with a separate shower), and treated to some of Darla's amazing cookies.

Darla constantly helped us with our every need. She suggested wineries to go to, gave us coupons so that we could have free tastings, and suggested great places for dinner (and gave us coupons for that too). In addition, there was a "Happy Hour" every day that Darla and James (one of her helpers there at the foothill house) would host, and they would both tell amazing stories, as well as provide us with some wonderful goodies and wine.

The foothill house has been our favorite bed and breakfast to date, and I truly believe that it is because of Darla and her hospitality. She really made you feel like you were at home.

“A wonderful, homey stay in Calistoga..”

Foothill House Bed and Breakfast

Jan 7, 2008

The Foothill House is a delightful little property just past the quaint town of Calistoga. The innkeeper, Darla, is a sweetheart. She is very attentive and will do anything to make your stay as wonderful as possible. The breakfasts are absolutely wonderful... simply outstanding. Afternoon wine/appetizers is also a fun time to meet fellow guests and chat with Darla.

We stayed in the Lupine Suite. It is a VERY roomy suite with a king bed, sitting area with fireplace and tv/vcr (along with numerous videos for viewing), and a small dining table for breakfast in between. It was very nice having such a large area to spread out in. There is also a small, semi-private patio off the room for warmer days. The cleaning of the rooms was immaculate.

Some of the things that could use improvement: There is a wall AC/heating unit which is EXTREMELY loud. Darla does provide a space heater for this reason, but the first night required the larger wall unit. Unfortunately, the noise woke us up several times that nite. Another suggestion is that if you like to cuddle up in bed and watch TV, that is not possible since the TV is located in the sitting area, away from the bed.

Even with the minor inconveniences, I give this location 5 stars for the service, attention to detail, and stellar breakfasts. If you love to have personal attention, love a homey atmosphere, and love being pampered with gourmet-style breakfasts, this is the place for you! If you would more prefer a fancier, posh accomodation without regard to personal attention, another more posh property would be more appropriate.
