“Relaxing place, great location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2013

We stay here for the pools. The pool area is cute, comfortable. We like to read, relax, drink wine. All the pools are warm-hot, so when it's hot out they aren't "refreshing". But as the sun sets, you can float around for hours. All are great in the morning hours.
Front staff is helpful. They do not allow you to book online, which is kind of weird.
Our room was okay. The whole place is dated; it's the style. It was clean, the bed was very comfortable. Very old bathroom. There are a few renovated rooms, but they only have 1 bed & are pricey.
Lots of great eating and drinking spots just steps away.
I do not care for the 2 nt min. on weekends, and I think their prices are a little high.
But I've stated here 4 times, and all were enjoyable.

Thank you for your comments and appreciate that you have stayed with us 4 previous times.
You mentioned booking on-line and that is currently available through booking.com and will be a feature most likely by the end of the year.
I hear your dissatisfaction over the 2 night minimum for the weekends, however, if we do happen to have any availability by mid of the same week, we will accept a one night booking. Most of our guests perfer to take the 2 days to really rest and relax making Fri/Sat or Sat/Sun ideal. I note that you are in Windsor so you may wish to take advantage of a last minute opening in the future.

We went to Calistoga for 2 nights before going on to Napa, and wished we had stayed there the entire time. It's a great little town and we would stay at the Roman Spa again when we go back.
The location right in town can't be beat. Who wants to drive to dinner after wine tasting all day? After talking to the front desk, we learned about the local shuttle which we took to wineries. We just called and they came in a few minutes, then called again when we were ready to move on to another winery. Vincent Arroyo and Lava Vine wineries were both fantastic.

Our room at the Roman Spa had a kitchenette. It was nice to have this area even though we didn't use it to cook any meals. We did eat breakfast there on Saturday morning when my husband brought back the best sticky bun ever from the farmer's market across the street!
Although it's an older property, it's spotless inside and out. The room was good sized with 2 sets of tables and chairs (one in the small kitchen) and the king size bed was really comfortable. The grounds were beautiful and well cared for. We saw groups both evenings at the BBQ area having a great time. The atmosphere is very casual as people walk around in bathing suits back and forth to the pools. I did see a group of girls in swim suits sneaking out to the pools after closing one night...not sure how they got over the pool fence and they were very quiet. I wonder if they got caught:) The pools were wonderful and clean. I really enjoyed the basket of pool noodles that were available for guests! What a great way to relax after a long hot day....

Thank you so much for your great comments. Indeed, Calistoga is a wonderful little town with so much to offer. We actually hear comments like yours often from guests who had either been elsewhere before arriving in our town or visa versa, they always wish they had spent all their time here!
I'm glad you enjoyed our property, we take great pride in what we offer as well as all the little "extras" that mean so much to our guests, such as the pool noodles, an ice chest to keep guest beverages cold while they are enjoying our geothermal water, umbrellas during the rainy season, and numerous thoughtful amenities if a toiletry item is forgotten.
Thank you again and we look forward to your return again the next time you travel to Northern California.

Come here at least 3 times a year. Simply love the people and the place. Now they have re done the pools and added ADA lift for main pool. No place better. Great location reasonable and the people who stay here are lovely. No need to move the car you can walk to town. Get a room with kitchenettes their barbecues are lovely and the market in Calistoga is great to buy provisions

Barbara,
Thank you for your comments as well as your loyalty to the Roman Spa. Indeed, we have recently placed an ADA lift that will accommodate both the large outdoor as well as the small Jacuzzi pool and it is being well received. We also took the opportunity to remove all mineral deposits that naturally adhear to the pool walls when the lift was being installed. We look forward to serving you again in the future.

This was our spot for our annual girl's trip. My friend had said not to set my expectations too high as it was an older property. I was NOT disappointed at all. Yes, it's a bot older but it wasn't tattered or smelly by any means! The property has a Hacienda feel to it & the landscaping adds to it with lush flowers and shrubs everywhere that create the feeling of an oasis. They even had star gazer lilies growing in the ground! We just don't see that in our hot So Cal climate!

Check in/out was a breeze. The staff was friendly and always visible, walking around and sweeping up or doing their daily chores with a smile. They were efficient when we asked for a roll-away bed & also an iron.

Rooms were clean, comfortable & having a kitchenette was a great way to enjoy making snacks and light meals to enjoy in the courtyards.

Many guests enjoyed their meals/snacks el fresco style and the BBQ area was great. People were friendly and in the mood to be chatty to others who wanted it also.

Area was 1 small street behind the main street which was very close (less than 200 yards) but very quiet. I would definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: They do have a newer building that seemed to have nicer outside furniture in front of it so perhaps...

Thank you for your kind review. I am glad we didn't disappoint and are very happy that we exceeded your expectations. Indeed, an older property doesn't mean it is in poor repair, "tattered, or smelly" (think of Europe or the East Coast that have hotel properties that are hundreds of years old). We give considerable care and attention to the property that you witnessed from our lush landscaping, clean rooms, and wonderful pools. Our pride shows in everything we do.
We look forward to serving you again in the future.

This was our second visit to Roman Spa, the first being in April. From making reservations to check out, the experience was simply better than I could have hoped for. It is a little hard to quantify, but while staying there, you kind of feel you are staying with close friends or an extended family. The whole vibe is very unassuming and unpretentious (not necessarily common in the wine country). The rooms are incredibly clean and there are employees constantly maintaining the beautiful lush grounds. There are individual tables, set within the flowering plants and palms as well as surrounding a large fountain. In addition to the grounds, the pools are sparkling clean. I noticed a prior reviewer brought up the issue of bees. Needless to say, over the two nights we spent at the inn, we noticed a few bees in the water, but just during the course of a hour or so ago, one of the employees would continuously, unobtrusively walk the entire exterior of the main pool and “net” out any bees or event leaves from plants that were in the water. The bees that were in the water were just a “non-issue.” In addition to the beautiful grounds, sparkling pools (perfect temperature), we were fortunate enough to be offered an updated room. New, modern carpet, dark furniture, flat screen TV, granite wet bar, in room safe, granite bathroom vanity, walk in designer tile as well as, almost a mosaic tile bathroom floor…….very luxurious. The staff, grounds and rooms were great and spa is literally right in the very center of town to walk to restaurants, etc.. A 5 star visit deserving continuous return visits.

Roman spa is absolutely the best place to relax and get away for the weekend or even in the middle of the week. The spas are fantastic, rooms are fantastic and the service all around is fantastic! Can't wait to go back!!!

Roman has always been the go-to place in Calistoga for its well-tended gardens, lovely mineral pool and in-town location. While the (not-updated) rooms have motel furniture, the bedding has been updated. We could ignore the annoying lights that shine in the rooms at night -- canceling out the possibility of opening windows to the great Calistoga night air - or the not clean air conditioning filters or the plastic molded bathrooms -- but this time, smokers right outside our room most of the day and into the night made a "spa" vacation into a health danger. The management were nice, but said they had designated tables outside -- which were located right outside first and second floor rooms -- as smoking areas. Guess what! Smoke rises! We spent two very difficult nights inhaling second hand smoke or air from not-so-clean air conditioning that made us sneeze and cough. Added to this, there were lots of bees, yes bees, in the pool that the management staff left alone. We only saw them fish them out once a day. What a disappointment!

Room Tip: Make sure you ask for a room not in the smoking section, which may be difficult as smoking tables ar...

I am so sorry that your visit with us this time was not a good experience for you. Indeed, our smoking policy has recently changed (from allowing guests to smoke throughout the property-minus the pool area, to two designated areas for a total of 3 patio tables). Since you felt the smoke rising up to your room was a "health danger," I wish you would have accepted our offer when we suggested 2 different room locations that were away from the designated smoking areas.
As far as the bee comments, indeed we are experiencing an influx of bees this year in our pool area, thus we have placed bee nets for guests use, however, the number of bees in the pool vary each day and staff do make pool rounds 3-5 times a day, if bees were in the water at the time, they would scoop them out. Being in a rural environment can be a challenge some times. Our entire team strives to provide a positive experience for each guest and I am sorry we were not able to meet your expectations.
