Went on a Saturday with girlfriends to experience mud spa. Did not know what to expect due to differing opinions from people I have talked to. We booked on a group rate of $58 for mudspa, mineral bath and pool access. This was a great deal because most places in the area charge 4x the rate minus the massage. Massage cost about $99 for 1 hr or around $67 for half. Try to book your massage early because it fills up fast.
The mud spa takes about 10-15 min. Make sure you arrive on time because they will take time off your alloted time. The mud is made up of peat moss and volcanic ash up to 105 degrees. It has the smell of sulfuric acid. At the beginning I felt quite nervous due to the heat but after awhile it was very relaxing. If you have aches and pains from arthritis, this may be a good way to relax those achy joints.
After the mud spa, you rinse off and them go to the mieral bath for about 20 min. The bath is infused with minerals like peppermint or othe botanicals. Then you go to the hot sauna for about 5 min. The wrap is the final stage in the process which is just a cool down on a bed with a blanket.
The place provides you with a locker to store your things and plenty of spa mineral water. Bring plastic bags for your wet outfit and flip flops if using the pool. Our group decided to bring food for a small picnic at the pool. The place provides tables and chairs and has a fire pit at night.
There are 3 kinds of pool. A circular pool for adults only due to the hot spring. A square pool for medium spring water and a lap pool for tepid water.
Saturdays are crowded. Housekeeping needs to keep up with the disposal of used towels.
The place is very close to downtown Calistoga with so many restaurant to choose from. Maybe next time we'll stay here overnight.
