I made an overnight stay at the Hilton Garden Inn while attending a weekend family event in Malibu. This location offered a well-priced alternative to the more expensive hotels/stays in Malibu and Santa Monica. And it was a pleasant drive on a canyon road to get to the beach (like most things in the Los Angeles area, it was only 20 minutes away).
The hotel was in a quiet location off of Calabasas Rd, far enough from the freeway to reduce traffic noise. My room on the 3rd (highest) floor overlooked the back-of-the-hotel parking lot. The vending and ice machines were located next to the elevators. So, if you choose a room far from the elevators because you want to avoid the noise, you will kill two birds with one stone by also being far from the ice machine. I found the elevators in good condition and no wait times for them.
The room was nicely laid out and included a new Nespresso machine, flat screen TV, AC unit and empty minifridge. The bathroom was clean and the water pressure very good. The only gripe I really had with the room was how loud the window AC unit was; those things always sound like giant snoring bears.
I didn't get a chance to partake in either the pool or the fitness center on this trip (though they looked in good condition during my stay).
I did have breakfast which was pretty awesome compared to what I've come to expect from these smaller hotels. The dining area (immediately lobby-adjacent) was clean and bright. The staff that waited on me noticed that I didn't order eggs or anything "heavy", so they reduced my bill. And they also serve POG juice! I love the stuff and have such a hard time finding it anywhere other than in Hawaii.
So, to recap:
- Cheap option if you're visiting the Malibu Beach area
- Quiet location
- Clean/well-kept property
- Fitness center onsite
- Free wifi (I didn't have any issue with speed)
- Nespresso machine in room
- Empty mini fridge
- Nice desk staff
- Small convenience store-like goods
- Comfortable bed
- Good breakfast facilities
- Loud AC unit
- Typical cookie-cutter room layouts (typical for these places)
- Somewhat older carpet in room
- You're not really going to be in the heart of the "LA Scene" here, although I have heard that some people have seen stars like the Kardashians, Justin Bieber up here.
Green Features: Only stayed one night, but it seems like they have some good practices on housekeeping if you stay multiple nights.
