I stayed at the Amarano for one night in August - it was the night of my wedding. I was not impressed. It was hardly a bad hotel - it's certainly clean, the rooms are fairly well appointed and if you're into hotels for this reason, the entertainment system is top-notch.
However, as has been said in previous reviews, the service is not great. The staff are not unfriendly, but they all appear to be somehow socially inept - acting as though speaking to other people is a real strain for them. It's very hard to explain. I was not greeted warmly upon arrival (in fact, I was greeted as though I was an invading viking), I found it difficult to find help with my bags and it took them half an hour to order me a taxi. They made no attempt to congratulate either me or my bride, or any of my wedding party despite the fact that they knew it was our wedding night and they saw us return with flowing wedding dress and tux on our viking hides. The parking ends up costing nearly $50 a night, which I find very strange. It's not as if the hotel isn't expensive enough.
The breakfast that we had at the hotel was another story. Firstly, the prices were all between $20 and $30 (for breakfast!). Then I discovered that there was a strange black mold on the bottom of a pastry I was eating. I showed it to the waiter (who was the slowest waiter in history) and he came back without an apology, claiming it was charcoal from the pan it was baked on. He chuckled along with us (although we were laughing at his ludicrously bad service) and offered me another. Frankly, he should have given me the breakfast for free. Ridiculous.
I won't stay at the Amarano next time I'm in Burbank, which is a town sorely lacking in decent hotels. I wish I had have taken a taxi into Hollywood, where good hotels abound in this price range. The price of parking your car at the Amarano would alone cover the taxi fare to Hollywood.
