I took my 6yr old son on vacation in June 2013 and we stayed at the Howard Johnson Buena Park. If you are on a budget, looking for a decent, clean, affordable place to stay and dont need all the frills of upper class lodging, I would DEFINITELY RECOMMEND that you stay here.
We stayed in a bedroom with 1 king bed. The room had SO MUCH extra floor space where my son was able to play with his toys while I sat at the desk or relaxed on the bed. The room had an extra long counter with cupboards, a kitchen sink, microwave and refrigerator w/ freezer shelf.
The room was cleaned daily by housekeeping, the common areas were always neat and clean and the pool was free of debris and the perfect color blue. The bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean. The pillows werent the best, but I used two and that worked fine. The room was warm and kind of humid when we first checked in, but I turned on the air and opened the curtain and it didnt take long for it to cool down to a reasonable temperature where we kept it for the remainder of our stay. The towels and wash clothes left much to be desired as they were small and thin (not soft and plush like more expensive hotel chains), but they got the job done. New ones were provided every day and I didnt see any stains or hairs on them (I always look).
They provided a free breakfast every morning which consisted of cereal, milk, waffles, toast, butter, jelly, orange slices, coffee and a couple different kinds of juice. My son has certain dietary restrictions, so while I was able to eat the foods offered for breakfast, he was not; however, because we had a refrigerator in our room, I was able to purchase foods that he can eat which I then brought downstairs to the breakfast room each morning so that we could eat together. They have a toaster and microwave in the breakfast room which I was able to use to prepare his foods. There definitely isnt a lot of variety with the breakfast foods, but we were only there for a few days, so I didnt mind eating the same things since it was free. If we had stayed longer, I could have easily supplemented their breakfast items with stuff from the grocery store to create a little more variety.
They also have an outside area with grills which we did not use, but I saw others using them and they seemed like a great option for larger families looking to save money on eating out.
They had free coffee and a water cooler dispenser in the lobby that guests have access to 24hrs a day.
They have free wireless internet access and in the lobby there is a computer with a printer that you can use free of charge to print e-tickets (there is a small fee to print other types of documents).
They offer daily free shuttles to Disneyland and Knott's Berry Farm so that you dont have to pay to park; however, they only did one drop off and pick-up per day. Also, they picked up at 8pm, so we weren't able to stay until the park closed or to see the fireworks, but an 11hr day (they dropped us off at 9am) was plenty long enough my 6yr old, so I decided to utilize them in order to save money on parking and for the convenience of being dropped off/picked up right in front of the park gates.
The staff was friendly: provided recommendations on places to eat in the area, directed me to Target, Wal-mart and a grocery store. The first morning we were there, we almost missed the shuttle to the parks, but they called the guy back and he waited for us. I lost my phone charger while I was there and when I happened to mention it to the lady at the front desk (I cant remember her name), she let me search through a box of unclaimed chargers they have collected over the years to see if there was one that fit my phone.
The location was great - about a 10-15 minute drive to Disneyland and about a 5-10 minute drive to Knott's Berry Farm. The neighborhood seemed safe and clean.
I wasn't expecting high-end accommodations; I just wanted a clean, safe place for my son and I to stay that wasn't too expensive so that I could put our money towards the amusement parks and activities that brought us to southern Cali for vacation. The free internet, free breakfast, free shuttle to the parks and refrigerator/microwave in the room were bonuses towards making my desires reality. The pool was a bonus for my son.
Although these were not the most luxurious accommodations I've ever had on vacation, for what I paid for our stay, it is by far the best value I've ever had. If we ever return to the area, I would stay here again.
