“Basic motel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2014

This is a basic motel but the staff and owners are very kind. Don't expect fancy - they do have a DVD player and some moives you can borrow which is a nice plus. They also have a great spot in the middle where people can come together and have BBQs, picnics, etc. It is clean and basic - what makes it is the people and the community outdoor space, and the ability to walk everywhere on the "main drag" (a couple of blocks).

Found this place for my birding group of 16 people. After reading the Tripadvisor reviews, I decided we should give it a try. We put all the singles in the motel rooms....6 singles, 6 motel rooms. Then we had five duplexes, each for two people who were sharing a room. I should have asked which units had an extra bed, because although they all have a queen sized bed, some only have a fold-out sofa in the living room, and others also have an extra twin-sized bed in the bedroom. We had to do a little shuffling and trading, as some were married couples and some were just two friends who agreed to share a room. Only one person had to ask for an additional room, as she did not want to sleep on a sofa-bed. They did give us a break on the extra unit, and I feel it was my fault for not getting more details. In spite of this, we all found the place to be clean and comfortable. The grounds are great for birding, and we all found several species of birds there. The location was great for Anza Borrego and we made several short trips to birding locations during our two night stay. I would recommend it to anyone who doesn't require luxury!

Room Tip: The duplexes are more expensive, but are a lot more comfortable for a longer stay, as they have a li...

Just spent two weekends there. One in the duplexes and one in the casitas. Casual, funky and fun. Within walking distance to shopping, restaurants and Christmas Circle. Great in March when San Diego is full of clouds. 80+ weather!! Beautiful!! Bathrooms are updated, kitchenettes are fun and funky. You can sit out on the patios and watch the stars at night and listen to the coyotes and generally soak up the desert peace. The pool is great for hanging out in the heat of the day or swimming at night when it's warm out. We've been coming for over 20 years too. BBQ and fire box with the casitas or patio chairs at the duplexes. Bring your own personal items for the kitchens but fully stocked with pots, pans, silverware, coffee machine and microwave and frig. Love the Ocotillos, hummingbirds, doves, rabbits, bats at night and a roadrunner or two (I saw two over the last two weekends). The stores in town are updated and lots of fun places to eat within walking distance or cook your own. Go to the Natural History store a block to the east on the same side of the street. The grocery store in the back of the building to the west is a great place to be and be seen and has a great little deli too! Great coffee early in the am across the street. Mike and his wife are great managers and have been there forever too! There's air conditioning if it gets too hot and nice warm blankets when it gets cold! Fireplaces(inside), large dinning tables outside with umbrella and nice couches outside in the casitas. A motel like it was 50 years ago with the same charm but being updated by the granddaughter! You even get a paper delivered every day! New shuffle board court and patio area if you want to have a large family gathering with lots of tables and chairs. Can't beat it in Anza Borrego!!

Room Tip: Duplexes are back to back but nice for a couple or two with a fold out couch. The casitas are set up...

Borrego Springs and Hacienda del Sol were both a pleasant surprise. The Hacienda is set back from the road on lovely grounds where you can sit in the evening and watch the stars. It is somewhat rustic, but that is part of its charm. There was only a shower (who takes baths on vacation anyway???) but that wasn't a problem. The owner (or manager?) was very helpful with information about where to eat. It was nice to be able to walk to Carmelita's for dinner. We would definitely stay here again.

We have been coming here for almost 20 years, most of those years with our kids and family friends, and we've always had a great time. This is a very unique property in the downtown area and close to everything, but it is not fancy or modern. The pool is spacious and we noted from our recent visit the've added new seating which is nice. We've stayed in the duplexes and the studio rooms and like them both. Mike and Cathy are great hosts that we look forward to seeing when we visit. Rooms have nice tv's and dvd players with a large selection of videos (and magazines) in the office. The only problem we encounter is the Wi-Fi service, it is not reliable and does not cover all the units. We would be able to come out more often if this was addressed. Overall, a great get away, very relaxing.

Room Tip: All rooms have great desert views.

A beautiful place to get away from the city and beach life. My wife and I foumd this to be a nice cozy place to enjoy the outdoors yet be close to everything for dinner n drinks. Accomidations and service was right on from check in to check out. Lots of good months to come out here and only a short drive.from san diego. Looking forward to our next visit, c u soon.

My first trip to Borrego Springs and it couldn't have been better. Perfect location for everything we wanted to do. We received friendly service throughout our stay--Mike & Cathy were very helpful. This place is not fancy but blends in perfectly with its desert surroundings. Everything was clean & well-maintained. We really enjoyed being able to watch the desert wildlife right from our own patio. The pool was comfortable and refreshing. Good selection of DVDs for us to borrow.
The hotel had everything we needed. Great desert setting with privacy. We want to return for another visit very soon!

Room Tip: The duplexes on the out side were best for us. #14. A kitchen, nice bathroom and comfortable livin...
